If your looking to create a virtual machine of your operating system the your currently using, then this video is for you. In this video we will take a look at making a copy of our current OS and use virtualbox to run our Virtual Machine

Disk2vhd is a utility that creates VHD (Virtual Hard Disk - Microsoft's Virtual Machine disk format) versions of physical disks for use in Microsoft Virtual PC or Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machines (VMs).

If this method was used to visualise a Windows host, could you then wipe the whole machine and use the resulting virtual machine in virtualbox running on a different host OS (e.g. Linux) or would Windows flag up some from of licence issue?

Can I clone a XP OS ( from another computer ) and put it in a Virtual Box? ( I have an old XP system with all my files and the MOBO died, can I clone my old XP HDD and put it in Virtual Box? Another question: I have a XP OS on Microsoft Virtual PC thumb drive but it will only run when it is a fresh install. ( the only way I can use it is if I dump it and reinstall it ). How do I use it without reinstalling each time? Also when I run MS VPC it will not add a printer/hardware. I have herd the Virtual Box adds hardware easy. Great video that helped tremendously! The only question I have (if anyone wants to chime in),Will this also copy files? Is there a way only to copy the OS and programs and not the files (docs, excel, downloaded material etc) on the drive?

no, unfortunately, it copies EVERYTHING on the drive, including the virtual hard drive, at the time the converter runs. unless all your docs are on a separate drive then you can exclude that drive at the start of the process

I'm trying to convert my Windows 8 into a VM, but it doesn't work as shown, it just either refuses to run, goes into a UEFI shell, or something other than Win8. I used Paragon Disk Manager 14, running on the same copy of Win8. Is this to do with Paragon, Virtualbox or my computer?

I noticed the "internet access" was not connected. My question is will both os's be able to be wireless? If I was using a Linux os in vm would there be a driver issue to solve as well to use them seamless? Thank you

Normally the connection will be bridge with the virtual machine. You'll be using your native connection for your virtual machines. Whichever one you choose whether Wireless or Ethernet.

Great video's bro, i go way back and know all of this, but its the comments that keep me around, i mean, why would anyone be interested in anything virtual and then ask the most ridiculous questions? must be trollin.. Back to vbox, i have found that over the years ssd is better for vhd files and paragon hard disk manager works great with some oldskool features you would enjoy tinkering with.. The windows 8 vhd built in creator is great too..

So, you put an OS inside an OS. It would be interesting to install a bare metal hypervisor and "import" this file, to a new machine, so several systems could run at the same time on the host on top of the hypervisor, so, if one OS crash, the others would remain intact. This way you did, if the "main" win7 crashes, your virtual box will crash too and all the OS running inside. Now, what hypervisor type 1 we could install ? ESXi ? Well, ESXi has a problem, we can only control through another machine. If you know a good hypervisor type 1 free that could be controlled by the same machine, please contact me. Thanks.

kjemradio late answer maybe helpful for others: As much as I can think of - 'Yes' if you store the virtual machine file on a separate disk - and then of course put that one really aside.

I get a blue screen when doing this. I captured a vmware virtual disk and set it as the main hdd for the new VM, it tries to boot to it (shows the windows loading screen) and then blue screens. any ideas?

FastRedPonyCar You might need to run the Windows SysPrep program on the original PC before doing the conversion

haley taylor yeah I was under the assumption that it was a driver issue that sysprep would eliminate but the machine I captured and tried to move to virtual is our primary domain controller so running sysprep on it isn't an option unfortunately. Since my original comment though, I've done a physical to virtual migration using vmware's utility which seemed to do the trick.

At 1:04 it shows selecting partitions. If he had had another physical disk connected it would show up and if selected it would output a second vdi file. I think the 2nd vdi file needs to be added in settings > storage

wait a minute is that the virtual hard drive you just created in the virtual machine could you just open virtual box mount that boot and repeat. That would create a paradox for the size of the vm

@@BiscuitsForBreakfast the problem with that is the massive and sudden drain it will inevitably have on the host OS resources. once you hit that 3rd level, watch out. daisy-chaining resources like that will do bad things.

Bit late , I know. Good video. But : what about MS-licensing after conversion. Basicly, if you convert an OEM-versie , WPA is coming into play and activation could fail.

BlueMaestro shouldn't be any problem if it is an activated installation you've virtualized then the virtual installation is also activated.

might help if you did some reading on what virtualization actually is. This creates a completely separate copy of your OS so it can be ran on another computer inside Virtual machine software. It' been around for decades. It does not change your local computer,

Holy shit, that program was expensive, nothing you use just to make one clone for testing, and the VmWare program demanded a account and was only for VmWare, Disk2VHD was free, but when I did try to use it with VirtualBox it gave an error all the time, so nothing in this tutorial is an actual option for folk that only want to make a test clone.

Yes I believe that is the free version. Paying for anti-virus is like paying the mob. "We'll protect you as long as you continue to pay us, but once you stop we'll cut you off."

kjemradio I also use a free antivirus. I was a big fan of AVG, but recently I switched to the new Bitdefender. I was also interested in Comodo, but did not see it on the AV Test that was recently done.

Shizzl3Mayn3 I loved AVG back in the day. At that time I had just switched from McAfee crapware to AVG. Man it was awesome. Then it got bloated, chugged my system, and it was already getting poor reviews. Avast! and Comodo are probably the two I'd recommend the most for free AV. :-)

Comodo Firewall was the blast for XP - you could lock, track and alarm everything you wanted - basically I still had real control of Windows and could deny Windows to do certain things. Then with Windows 7 never seen it again - poor days started: Now Windows does what is wants... same as iOS.

Yes, you can, but you don't have to. And yes, you can Boot a VHD. It's up to you if you wanna Convert it anyway.

Export the virtual machine as an .OVA file, then you can import it as-is to any virtualization software, and back it up like any other file. (Albeit a large file.)

Let's you get a new computer after purchasing software that you cannot easily migrate like HR Block Tax software for 10 years in a row, and you don't want to buy $800 worth of software over again just to see your old tax files every once in a while.
