Hi could you please tell me at what point does the gable end wall get built in the conversion? I understand that the roof structure is all timber when you remove the hipped roof, but is the brick work just for appearance?
Not my property, I only shot the video for the owners. I believe the wall was built during and after the timber structure and is mostly cosmetic. The ridge beam doesn't look deep enough to me. I didn't see the dormer structure being built so there could be additional supporting timber. It was architect designed and all passed by the building inspector.
Thanks for the response. I see a lot of hip to gable being the timber structure and then just clad with tile hang - so wondered how some go with brick work. Do they simply build on top of the wall plate there? Also, I didn’t quite know what you’re getting at with the depth of the ridge beam?
The hip roof structure was removed. It's now a gable end structure with rafters attached to a ridge beam. In my opinion the ridge beam should be as deep as the rafter end vertical cut.
It was in the middle of the pandemic, materials and people in short supply so it took 6 to 8 weeks for the building work and many more for all the internal work! Lots of DIY labour. Approx £25,000 including internal finishing. Building inspector said he would expect a £50,000 price tag if all done by a contractor.
