@@geoDB. The CIA has successfully overthrown every single instance of an attempted socialist movement in a foreign country. If you genuinely believe a US intelligence agency is aligned with the number one target of US intelligence agencies then you know less than nothing about what you're talking about.
@Mantriox Tbh, term limit law only exist in US because Republican party saw how popular FDR policy were and feared that a president that actually care about their peoples would be so popular and cannot be ousted by honest election alone.
@@HumanPerson_final Trump already incompetent enough to lose a honest 2020 election and even failed to capitalize the 6 January capitol riot. He would be still unable to have a life-long presidency even if the term limit never existed in the first place.
You know, when looking at how you did all that and what it all led to, I can't shake off the feeling that you've somehow ended up with a proto-United Earth from Star Trek, with everything pretty much set for the discovery of Warp tech and Vulcans to arrive.
Federation was (will be?) classless, democratic, no currency, post scarcity. Pretty crazy it was written back in the 60s, only a few years after McCarthy! Cheers, im also a Trekkie!
@@AlzaboHD which is wierd how people seemed to try to accuse the Federation of being fascist. I don't remember the points right now but it seems interesting.
Yeah that really does explain it better, not to mention it's littlerally impossible to make a game where the idea is to INCREASE democracy, I mean what, the goal is to stop playing? Lol
@@rmcewan10 he also went from basically nothing to down basic social programs which naturally will look far more drastic than starting as one of the most advanced places on earth
@@rmcewan10 not hard when the previous 20 to 30 years had been nothing but civil war, and all out war with Japan. Mao pretty much just had to sit back and not let the country collapse.
*in a game*, fuck you guys are dumbasses. Every ideology sounds good on paper, or in a game, but fun fact, reality exists, and it's different and a fuck ton more complicated. Tell me one communist country that has done extremely well, and I don't mean places like china, which is basically a fascist country, not a communist one, and even that hasn't done well really either.
Best democracy 4 video I’ve watched BY FAR. I’ve been waiting for dem4 content like this since the beginning of the year so this is sure scratching an itch lmao. Good stuff, hope to see more! Subbed
So called communism (rather, the social revolution) in USSR improved living conditions and education for the vast majority of people. There was terrible poverty and illiteracy throughout Russia in 1917 and the revolution transformed life expectancy, health, education and dignity for most people profoundly by the 1960s. The story is similar in China, with average life expectancy 40 years old in 1950 and 75 years old when Mao returned, with similar improvements in literacy from 10% to 75% over the same period. The advances in China today are almost small compared to the major advances early on when imperialist capitalism was overcome, no small feat.
The experience of Allende already shown us that the pacific way to the socialism is not possible, and USA being the top 1 superpower in the world it makes it even less possible because of his strong state that has the capital and power to avoid any revolution. As Lenin said, the revolution will start in the weakest point of the capitalism. And he was right because it started in the Russian Empire that was the weakest superpower in the 1st world war.
The experience of EVERY democratically elected moderately socialist gov in Latin America goes to show socialism, at least socialism that challenges the hegemonic control of the empire actively was not possible through the liberal means. It had to be a movement and it had to seize power illiberally. Maybe I am being infantile and ignorant but Cuba and Nicaragua were the only ones that managed to do it correctly back then. Nowadays the Pink Tide has made it easier for the internationalists here. Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela, Bolivia, Argentina have been somewhat successful in their struggles and many times it was done pacifically and democratically.
USAR : Union of Socialists American Republics. Damn this game seems really cool ! But when is socialism became an idology of people who don't work anymore ? haha
@@silenthornet5502 This is why I think true Communism is completely unrealistic, as you would need AI to completely run the country, jobs, etc. But people obviously like to rule themselves instead lol
@@noodled6145 ai isn’t supposed to run the country just like hard labour and I kinda agree like sweat shops shouldn’t exist and btw I mean end goal like it’s expected to take a long time and lots of scientific advancement
This was fun to watch,... but why'd you increase gun control? Felt like that was inaccurate, since communists and really far left types tend to be in favor of personal gun ownership. "Under no pretext should arms and ammunition be surrendered; any attempt to disarm the people must be stopped, by force if necessary." -Actual quote from Karl Marx
That and a few other policies like the increase of cameras left me nervous that he was going to devolve into an authoritarian nightmare. Overall though, the majority of policies seem pretty appealing funnily enough. Just a shame that anyone trying this irl is would’ve been in at least one civil war / attempted military coup the moment they started winning the election, much less actually implementing helpful reforms
@@historiansayori2089 the spy cams left me nervous too, but the massive downscaling of police armament, removal of tear gas and water cannons, and investment into water cannons balanced it out. Sure, privacy is dying a painful death, but that is already the case IRL, and if killing privacy in public spaces saves every other right we have and ups average lifespan to almost a century and a half, I think it is worth it. Also, with the strong anti corruption mechanisms the state has and the massive crackdown on tech companies, it is basically a more transparent version of the spying we already get from google and facebook.
@@YourLocalMairaaboo Idk. I’m an anarchist and the kind of socialists vicariously depicted in the video don’t take very kindly to us to put it lightly. That and I don’t trust anyone with an extensive security system since they or someone else they give access would inevitably abuse it. Mostly I say this in thinking of how it would go down irl hypothetically (ignoring that the military would probably try and coup the government day 1, necessitating a crackdown at bare minimum and likely a civil war)
I might be talking out of my butt right now, but is it feasible to make a religious communist society in Democracy 4? There seems to be this assumption that communism = atheism, and this playthrough exemplifies it, but surely it must be possible. I mean, for example, Acts states the early Christian community "had everything in common," meaning they shared stuff and had little to no individual property, not that they necessarily had the same hobbies or whatever. That example is, to my limited understanding, more socialist than communist, but idk.
This was a development from the Russian revolution, the church was one with the tsar, it was one of his oppressive institutions and it worked against the reds during the Civil War. It kinda had to go, but what soviets did there was a massive mistake in the end. Religion is comparable with socialism, Christianity especially. Sandinistas in Nicaragua were Christians and socialists . . Before us financed death squads to kill them all. But hey, it was nice while it lasted.
I like how almost every single policy is objectively humane and improving society but somehow Al keeps using sarcasm and stereotypes such as pushing the term limit being a communist tradition and secularity promoting atheism
@@stephenjenkins7971 Totalitarianism is a form of government and a political system that prohibits all opposition parties, outlaws individual opposition to the State and its claims, and exercises an extremely high degree of control and regulation over public and private life. Removing term limits isn't that. Not even close. A totalitarian state can have a monthly term limit if it wants to. That's not why it's totalitarian.
@@stephenjenkins7971 I didn't say removing term limits was humane, I was only calling out that it was not "a communist tradition" in particular since we're seeing rather liberal, convservative or centrist state leaders do it, while there also are and were many communists respecting term limits in Nepal, Guyana, Uruguay, France etc. What I was refering to when speaking about humane policies were building railways, offering daycare, taxing the rich to invest in things that are useful to the people and so on. Most of what he's doing in the video, basically
why does the US in game start with low poverty, this is unrealistic, 54% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, with 21% of the population struggling to pay their bills, it just seems the game doe not reflect this
doesn't seem authoritarian to me I interpret the huge taxes as just abolishing "profits" altogether and putting them directly into government/public spending
The really small detail that I liked was how the introduction of automation rose unemployment. This actually reflects on what Marx stated that as technology increases efficiency the average person will become liberated from needing to work to survive to working as a bonus. As such, not everyone will choose to and the game reflected that. A small detail but a cool one!
@@iminyourwalls8309 In a system where production is organized around meeting societal need rather than profit, "producing more goods" isn't necessarily a desirable goal on its own.
Genuinely appreciate how there is minimal political debate in the comments as most people realize that this is a video game and not an actual realistic representation of the muti faceted consequences of policy change.
@@oskar1076 I would argue mankind really is socialist deep inside, with capitalism being a rather new concept. Though my knowledge of economic theory is next to non-existent.
"Fully Automated Luxury Gay Space Communism is a phrase associated with far left movements on the internet. It envisions an idealistic society where gender norms have been abolished to such an extent that there is little to no difference between gay and straight, and due to automation, luxury is available to all people." It's the future, my dude.
@@WookieChef So basically, Communist Egalitarianism with high technological advancements? That's kinda like Ultravisionary Socialism/Communism with Egalitarianism.
@@basil7292 Well, duh; the statistic about that relies on the US' Aid to civilian infrastructure, learning, and training of military forces to be equated to "support". With this metric, the US supports literally most of the world's countries on the planet, including 100% of the world's democracies. It's a junk statistic meant to provide a picture, and specifically omits the part I just mentioned. Anyone with even a marginal idea of where that statistic came from will just roll their eyes at it.

Somehow he ended up with even more rich people, despite the heavy taxation. Then again, tax evasion and a burdened bureaucracy might have something to do with it. 🤔
The current American tax system is basically just tax evasion for the wealthy. The wealthy paying more than 0% in taxes would result in a lot of money going into the economy instead of being hoarded. Truly amazing the level of mental gymnastics there buddy
@@derekskelton4187 moreover, the absurd amount of wealth that they have still means that they still account for a lot of the taxation even when they evade it (this shouldn't be a lower-tax-for-the-rich cuck viewpoint but the opposite), which is a capitalist phenomenon.
the US only 'has relatively low poverty' becuse we simply don't count half the poor as impoverished because they make above the poverty line(inaccurately low benchmark compared to developed nations) before taxes and necessities

Wouldn't mind having a dictator if quality of life was this good. Also, what's the point of having a Military Budget in this game if you can't even go to war lol.
That moment when taxes actually fund services for everyone, which makes it affordable for everyone. Just like public transportation, walking, biking, skateboard, hoverboard, anything other than a car can actually improve traffic and reduce oil consumption and carbon levels. Who knew.
If it did you'd see that the rest of the world would start implementing similar policies. The US is the key. If the US defunds the military Russia, China, North Korea would follow suit. If the US increases taxes the rest of the world will follow. Currently countries don't implement socialist policies even if they would like to for fear of a US backlash in the form of a sponsored coup, economic isolation, invasion etc.
@@KingArthur39 Nope. Not militarily. The US doesn't need an overblown military for defense. The Death Star wasn't called the Defence Star because even the Empire thought that would be a stretch.
I love how optimistic the playthrough ended up being. Even if it is a game that is devoid of revolution and struggle it's still nice to see a realization of something that resembles communism and people having their needs met. It's refreshing and it makes me hopeful for the future.
