Well well well... After a year I'm finally back with a new project!
So recently I've purchased a Volvo B10m coach with a view to convert into a motorhome. This is going to be a massive project but I'm determined to see this through! I hope you enjoy the series

You need to check the your license and road regulations on what you can drive long before even thinking about a project .

My license would have enabled me to drive this both as a coach and/or as a PHGV had the project been completed. The vehicle would have had to be IVA inspected and as long as it didn't exceed 18000KG which was the MAM of the coach it could be plated as a Private Heavy Goods Vehicle which would allow it to have a Class IV MOT providing it's design and layout did not have the capacity of carrying goods for hire and reward and not adapted to carry another mechanically propelled vehicle internally such as a motorbike. Operator's license would also not be required as it would not have been able to be operated in scope of operator's license and would not be subjected to UK or EU driver's hours regulations in the UK as it would be registered as a Class IV also providing it wasn't towing in excess of 750KG. I wouldn't be so sure about that legislation in the EU, but as it was never meant to go abroad under my ownership I never looked into it. Unfortunately as it was explained in another video the thefts of stuff from the vehicle whilst in storage put a stop to the conversion sadly 😞 I hope that cleared up some of your concerns 🙂

Awesome project! Can't believe how cheap it was! Always wondered how much it costs to run something like this. Mpg, tex etc.
@scrapsavers7744
@scrapsavers7744 3 года назад
Thanks! I've been told this does 10mpg. This will also get classed as a private HGV so it should be less than £150 a year to tax

How did you find this coach for sale . I can’t find anything as nice as yours

I got it direct from the coach company, I'm pretty sure they still have a couple for sale around the £1000 mark unless they have got rid of them by now. I will be putting an update video up on the progress soon

I called them on the off chance, I look at two prior to this one but they were rotten wrecks and there was alot wrong with them mechanically

Hi, how did you drive it back? Can you drive it on a C licence if not carrying passengers and what is the process for getting insurance to cover use and conversion over to a camper? I would appriciate the info as I am considering the same. Cheers.
@scrapsavers7744
@scrapsavers7744 2 года назад
At the time I had a traders policy but I had to jump some hoops and catch fish to be able to insure it as a PHGV even though it was still a complete coach. Some traders policy's will allow you to insure it as a PHGV if you are stating that you are changing use of the vehicle. The DVLA from my recollection no longer change vehicle types to MOTORHOME it will just just come under for an example a van that's been converted as a VAN WITH WINDOWS but in my case it would of come under PHGV had the project been completed when it came to registering it

@@scrapsavers7744 Thanks, what about the licence question? I have a class 2, but PSV/PCVs are based on passengers?
@scrapsavers7744
@scrapsavers7744 2 месяца назад
Whilst it is still in the eyes of the law a Public Service Vehicle (a vehicle designed to carry passengers with more than 8 seats excluding driver) yes you will need a PSV to drive the vehicle and a valid CPC qualification and valid driver's tachograph card. Once converted it can be replated and registered as a PHGV provided it has less than 8 seats including driver's seat (7 passenger seats and 1 driver's seat) and is not designed to carry goods for hire or reward and is not also adapted to carry a mechanically propelled vehicle such as a motorbike. Once registered as a PHGV you will still need a license that covers you to drive the weight of the vehicle (Class 2 HGV minimum in this case, if towing a trailer then Class 1 would be required even if the trailer is under 750KG)
@caerleon9176
@caerleon9176 2 месяца назад
One of those licence quirks with the DVLA. As I can drive a C1/D1 (greater than 8 less than 16 seats) if unpaid and voluntary on a normal car licence (Scouts/Three Peaks) and a PSV driver can drive a HGV recovery vehicle without a C or CE licence!?!

With the max weight stuck at 7.5t ,converting buses just ain’t worth the hassle as there ain’t many buses big enough to covert that will meet the U.K. governments rules . Unless you go for the extra test to get the license ,which is another £2000 if your lucky. Which is a pity as thousands of buses could be being converted rather than being scrapped. .
@scrapsavers7744
@scrapsavers7744 2 месяца назад
Providing the chassis and body aren't modified to carry more weight than the original manufacturers specification and that of the ministry of transport plate there isn't a concern when it comes to the weight. You can have a vehicle 'down plated' or a vehicle 'up plated' to its original manufacturers specification if it had been modified to be a MAM lower than factory. A lot of 'recovery' and EU haulage companies have been known to do this to avoid running in the scope of operator's license. When I took on this project I had consulted with DVLA, DVSA, ministry of transport to make sure the conversion was as viable as possible with as little headache getting the vehicle registered for the use it would have been intended for.

So those bus seats don't unscrew? You could have sold them on eBay ... there really is no need to damage them there's still life in those seats... 10m:47sec that's it am out
@scrapsavers7744
@scrapsavers7744 2 года назад
Alot of the seatbelts were broken, the reclining mechanisms were also broken and held together by washers and other strange things and the fabric also had cigarette burns, rips, fraying and the stitching was coming loose. Gotta remember these seats were 21 years old at time of ripping them out so they had seen their fair share of use over the years but they were in fact advertised for free but in the end no one wanted them and they were advertised weeks before I actually picked the bus up so I did do my best... But the return on the scrap had in fact gone back towards the initial purchase of the bus so it owed me less than the initial cost price of £900
