Converting my Firewood Shelter into a Tiny Cabin - Foundation┃EP9┃Alone Off Grid in Alaska

In this episode I take on the challenge of converting my short lived firewood shelter into a tiny cabin so I can survive the Alaskan winter! Where do I start? A good foundation wouldn't hurt!
Logo designed by: www.joepanella...
If you're new here, my name is Sean Paul!
I sold everything I owned and drove to Alaska. I came with my dog, my cat, and a dream to create an off grid sanctuary on 5 acres of Alaskan wilderness! The challenge is, I have zero experience and I’m just a dreamer with a RU-vid subscription! I can only imagine the journey ahead...I hope you stick around, and welcome, to Gettin' Off Grid!

Hey y'all, I'm aware of some sputtering in the beginning parts of my video! It seems to be 3 spots in the first 10 minutes. It's definitely not just you! I think my video was corrupted in the encoding process. I just edited the video in the RU-vid Studio to try and remove those spots. It could take a couple hours to process!

Where’s your metal screen for underneath your floor so critters can’t get in
@henryjedynak45
@henryjedynak45 16 часов назад
I'm not sure if you have a plan or might have missed it. But you should put something on the bottom to prevent squirrels and other smaller critters from making holes in the insulation below your flooring.
@maryb1686
@maryb1686 15 часов назад
i was thinking that same thing! Critters are going to gnaw that stuff for nests. Hardware cloth would be perfect to keep the critters off the insulation. Also, make sure to seal ALL gaps around the upright posts. a mouse can squeeze through a 1/8 inch gap. You dont want to be overrun by varmints

Chicken wire

Not too sure he can do that as it's close to the ground, but closing in around the bottom would help for sure!

If you use plywood, this will form a better seal against drafts. You’ll create an insulated bubble of warm air

Hey Sean Paul, this is "The Old Buck" logger. I wanted to take a moment to echo the encouragement of others. As some have already said you can tell a lot about a person by how they treat their animals and I totally agree with that. If I knew nothing else about you that would be enough for me to keep watching. I'd like to make one small suggestion about something else that for some of us will make watching even more enjoyable than it already is, and believe me when I say it's not a make-or-break thing for me. You are doing are doing an amazing job at learning to build things and I know many experienced builders who could learn a few things from you even now. Bear that in mind when you call yourself a fool or an idiot for not knowing something in advance. Most fools and idiots would not know they did it wrong and if they did they never would have taken take the time to fix it, let alone have the desire to learn how to do it better. Fools and idiots just keep on doing it wrong. That being said, instead of degrading yourself, take the high road and turn it into a teachable moment. Not just for you but also for those who may not have caught the mistake. You have an incredible gift that engages people's attention. And at your age, that gift reaches a wide range of age groups both young and old. My hope is that your channel will not only grow well but that it will inspire upcoming generations to get out of the house and build stuff. Thanks for what you do and it's good to see you back.

Of course you will feel lonely & down from time-to-time. But you also have a unique ability to kick-yourself-in-the-ass when you need to. Sean Paul, I am so proud of you! What a great accomplishment you have made with the floor. Remember failure isn’t a bad thing, it’s an opportunity to be better than the last time. Without it, we aren’t learning. To watch your skills improve with each task has not only been rewarding for you but for your viewers as well. And I love that your neighbors came to help. Us Alaskans help each other when we can. We are our own breed.

Also love how much joy your pets bring you, can tell how much you love each other. Take care, stay safe.

I absolutely LOVE bad weather. My grandpa told me when I was little that rain was God cleaning the sky, air and ground, it also was to sustain all life on earth. He said thunder was God bowling, He loves bowling and lightning was God getting a strike, He gets lots of strikes. Winds was God cleaning too. Snow was God paing a beautiful picture of peace and quiet for us. To this day bad weather makes me smile and puts me in a good mood no matter how I am feeling. I hope you remember what my grandpa said next time you are in a hole, I hope his words make you smile despite the hole. 🙂

OK, just finished watching. The reflectix will help a tiny fraction but it will help. Please level with us and say you’ll never use the level as a beating board again :) - I’m interested to see what your plan is for the rest. It will work and it will keep you warm and dry and in the end, that’s all that matters. I hope you’ll take the fun little jabs as comedy because you’re an improv guy! Ok, so, maybe I’m not as funny, but, I’m tall. So, I got that going for me. Don’t ever feel like you can’t share your emotions to your audience. This is your channel. The audience is here for you. Good, bad, and anything else. If you aren’t feeling like you’re accomplishing anything, its totally cool to put out a little short video saying that. What you might find is 1000’s of people giving you the encouragement to get up and do 1 more little thing, in the series of little things. Keep on keeping on man. You got this, every single day. Remember these 2 quotes. The will serve you well. “Do get something you’ve never had, you have to do something you’ve never done” - Denzel Washington. “I didn’t come this far to only come this far” - unknown who first said it but many said it before rap artists. Be good!

Aluminized bubble wrap works as stated, but its reflectivity isn't the whole story; because heat will still move across it, and there's very little there to stop it. In Alaska, you're going to need real insulation everywhere you can get it - the bubble wrap has an R-value of 1. In that kind of cold, you want R30 or better if you can get it. I mean - the foam board is fine for short term, but you'll want to (at the very least) put some 1/4" hardware cloth across the bottom to keep the mice out of it. The less insulation you have, the more wood you burn, the less time you can go having no fire actively burning. When it's -40, both you and your pets will appreciate every bit of insulation you can get. Rock wool is a good choice because it's tolerant of moisture. Just wear mask+glasses+long sleeves or you'll regret it. (Use a bread knife to cut it.)

The golden part of fall is my favorite time of the year. I love the way the air starts nipping, and there's just something about the light that leave me feeling really good. It looks like you're a few weeks ahead of the changing seasons compared to where I live. Not sure how used you are to shorter days, but I suspect you are going to be reacquainted with darkness soon enough. The time between the last fallen leaves and the first snow can seem really heavy - just remember that it is a passing thing. No matter how dark and wet and cold and miserable it gets, the sun *will* come back, and before you know it summer is back again. In the meantime, hang in there, you're doing so well! Thank you for a lovely update, I'm looking forward to the next one! 😊

Well done Sean, it's a good start for winter preparations. Try to make at least one window in the cabin that can open. And dont forget ventilation on floor level, (low at the side wall) your woodstove needs fresh air to burn. And be aware of the critters under the cabin, beter close the sides. For the rest of the built succes brother, your doing great.

Sean Paul, You keep on dancing man 'til the cows, moose, elk, reindeer whatever come home! Dancing releases endorphins, which make you happy.. all those that say stop.. need to dance and get happy with themself.. lol Every foundation is made of the smaller things, that other things are built upon until it becomes one. You have a solid foundation to build on, and I'm not just talking about the cabin you're building. :)

In the military, they'd just say carrying those sheets 1 at a time just builds character. Get er done!

Man, that was a fun video Sean. Seriously, you're building a great little homestead, and you also know how to shoot and edit a quality video. So many cabin builders on RU-vid are experienced builders, but few know how to entertain people. You're a pro at this. I laughed out loud several times (the ATV surfing was hilarious) and your commentary is heartfelt. Keep doing what you're doing man. And, I agree, film it all.... the good, the bad, the sad, whatever. It's real life, and people will relate to this. Thanks man.

In my tiny cabin, I used 2" GPS insulation, it's like EPS foam but infused with graphite and foil faced on both sides. I put it on top of sub floor then flooring on top, super easy to cut a couple 4x8 sheets. It's continuous R10, it's reflective and no doubts about it working or not. Just make sure to double plate the bottom of door so it sits above the foam/flooring and measure the door opening from top of bottom plates.

Hi mate. I am Allan from Auckland New Zealand. I have had depression before and I know what it is like so I am thinking and praying for you. Just a thought. How about a shed area so when it is nasty outside or dark you have somewhere to go for projects or tool maintenance and storage of tools and extra food and eventually a freezer for all of your hunting kills of deer etc. You are awesome mate and I so look forward to your entertaining videos. I am living through you at the moment because I have fractured my spine so I am bed and house bound. Looking forward to your next video. You are. awesome. Thanks so much for you sharing your life experiences and keeping it real.

Definitely want to go the extra mile to keep critters out from under the floor/out of the cabin. Wire, and building down to the ground for sure. See Wild Homestead's recent endeavours through those shenanigans. Either way this will be a BIG improvement over the tent. Not the original plan, and probably not optimal, but absolutely beats freezing to death!

My late husband & I have built 2 cabins & U should listen to what people are trying to tell U. Take & build around that Tent because U can use that platform & build your cabin & then when your finished-take the tent down. Your going to need everything U can get this winter. Listen to people-they are trying to help. I watch your channel & I see things U should be doing. Get things done before winter-it comes fast up their. Be safe & God Bless. Phoenix

I fully agree, his life depends on having a warm and sturdy shelter before the snow hits. I hope he keeps that fact on his mind at ALL times! Especially when he feels beat down. Winter won't wait for anyone to cheer up. Unfortunately. 😢
