Love soft jaws. Not just for round work either. Got a pallet of castings with nothing to chuck to? Butcher, weld to, whatever a set of chewed up soft jaws, turn, bore, or mill registrations, clamping features, etc and go to town. Three jaw on the lathe also works on on the table of a mill, HBM, VBM, whatever. Add soft jaws and screw a buncha $100K modular set-up kits. Keep it simple, secure, and repeatable.

It almost seemed like there was something a little off about the material while you were roughing beyond the wonky saw cuts, the tool that was roughing the center V seemed to have consistent load but the sound was changing, then during finishing it seemed like the surface was rougher on one side than the other. Did you notice that while you were cutting?

How do you run an NC program on a part like that? You gotta chuck up a big slug, and wind up with a finished piece.....and if you've got a dimension that's off, you have to put an offset in for that tool and run it again, right? How do you avoid scrapping parts that are out of tolerance....?
@ksanalyticalsystems2438
@ksanalyticalsystems2438 Год назад
Is there a reason that so much material was removed from the ends after hardening?
@ChrisMaj
@ChrisMaj Год назад
Just for a weight saving, but flame hardening has a tendency to distort, so I left as much material as I could. As you can see, the finished part has a really thin wall.
