I liked this podcast. I think what wasn't mentioned about unity was what Romans 14 teaches about not putting a stumbling block in someone's way. Those who are weak in faith are not to be destroyed by those who hold a stronger faith. I think that was what Matt was getting at, without really saying it. Rom 14: 22-23 shows that when it comes to issues, we disagree with, as long as a brother walks by his faith, he is not sinning, even though he isn't right about what he believes. I think we all are far from doctrinal perfection and hopefully we will progress in straightening that out as we grow in Christ. What is good about this is that God sees in the heart of His new creature the desire that very much want to please Him. I think that is what delivers us from the doctrinal error we all have. When Jesus calls us to be perfect as our Heavenly Father is perfect, it is something He wants us to strive for, while realizing the incredibly vast difference that lies between the two. When we see ourselves in light of Almighty God, we should be unable to lift our eyes toward heaven and fall on God's mercy. (Luke 18:13) Real unity in Christ doesn't vaunt us higher than another brother just because we think we understand all mysteries and have all knowledge. We know that profits us nothing without love. We know that having love one for another is the more excellent way for the perfect bond of unity. None of us can come to God more readily than anyone else. At the foot of the cross, none of us are better or more worthy than anyone else. Reconciliation to God is only by God's great grace, His great mercy and His great love by the sacrificial death of the Son of God who made a way for us when we were dead in our trespasses and sins.

Interesting interview. I would be interested in Matt Whitman's concept of Ecumenism, since considering a Roman Catholic who profeses all Roman's doctrines and creeds (those which are not shared with protestants) seems quiete Ecumenist to me. I take what he said on knowing deeper other's professions of faith prior to critic them superficially.

So refreshing to hear a brother who seeks first to understand another than to state his prejudices and declare judgment. Less tribalism and more respect is requisite to build Christ’s kingdom. Before we critique, we ought to be able to state our opponent’s view with such grace and clarity that he would agree the characterization. We may not think what he thinks, but we know why he thinks what he does and why we don’t think the same. IOW’s steel-man him and then make differentiated distinctions. Only after such preliminary work is it time to swing the serrated sword. And if you don’t agree you are probably a heretic.

He's right. Suddenly, I want to go write my version of the Esther story. I did Hosea, with a more modern telling and titled it "For the Love of a Devil." But given I've been working on a second draft of a novel for over a year, it could be years before I get to it.

I've watched a lot of Matt's videos and have a great appreciation for him. It is from that appreciation that I have to disagree with his statement that Convictional Unity is not Ecumenism. Even with Matt's detailed definition of that term, Convictional Unity still sounds like Ecumenism by another name. Yes, it's a more open and honest Ecumenism (with a better, more respectful disposition, which definitely counts for something), but it's Ecumenism all the same. (Whether that's good or bad can be debated, but the net result is the same. It's just from a slightly different posture.)

I like Keith's view on who can take the table if not a member of his church. I wonder what do you think if people are beleivers, but have been infant baptised? Also as a presbyterian at a baptist church I'm supprised at the number of families who haven't had their believing children baptized. Do find this common? A great book that talks about the value of denominations is Rodney Starks ONE TRUE GOD.
@SeanWinters
@SeanWinters Месяц назад
A major reason to not have "believing children" baptized is to absolutely ensure the child isn't just saying what the parents want, on top of the belief that baptism doesn't save. Many parents wait until their kids are teenagers and have "their own faith" before baltism. This is relatively uncommon, most are okay with 7-10, but it does make sense if you don't believe that baptism saves.

While the statement “I can’t think what I don’t think” may be true of a present condition, it’s a faulty way to approach a life of faith. Indeed, if you can only embrace and live by what you can wrap your head around and intellectually consent to, that’s not living by faith.

By this interview I'd consider myself a fundamentalist. Atleast a moderate one to where I don't feel I need any unity with the Catholics or Greek Orthodox. I don't want the eucharist and feel Catholics need to be evangelized. Many ministries put those denominations outside the evangelical church including Dave hunt and Ray comfort and others. By the way Ray comfort would be a great guest and yes still love the channel!

I don't say this lightly, but Ray Comfort is simply dishonest in the way that he addresses Catholicism. He continues to use the bad argument that "Catholics removed the 2nd commandment" even though he's been corrected on it many times. Catholics did NOT remove the second commandment, either from the Bible or from the Catechism (it's in both), yet Ray continues to spread the lie that they did. I wouldn't even have a problem if Ray just argued that Catholic practice violates the 2nd commandment. I would disagree with him obviously, but that's at least a good faith critique, as opposed to spreading blatantly false information.

Hi Keith. First time on the channel. Showed up in my feed cause I’m a patron of Matt’s channel. I want to clarify one point he made made about indulgences in the Catholic Church (this isn’t a post arguing for or against indulgences; it is simply a point of clarification). You cannot give money to the Church and receive an indulgence. Matt’s statement was incorrect. There was a time when this happened and caused great abuses so the Church banned the selling/buying of indulgences in the 16th century at the Council of Trent. And, in 1567, St. Pius V cancelled all grants of indulgences involving any fees or other financial transactions. Also, receiving an indulgence doesn’t take away years you spend in purgatory since purgatory isn’t a place and time as we understand it doesn’t really exist after death. Hope this helps. Thanks.

So, I feel like a lot of Roman Catholics may feel that way, but the church actually anathematized Protestant beliefs, so that kind of leaves us at an odd position until they do something about that.

@@SM12397No, the anathema is not in place for you, there are some great resources on line explaining this. You are not under any Catholic anathema. It was only for Catholics who rejected Catholic beliefs. Not non Catholics who reject Catholic beliefs.
@SeanWinters
@SeanWinters Месяц назад
@@td6425Except protestants condemn the church, which says nothing about the individuals. Pretty much every protestant believes that many catholics are saved, despite catholic teachings, but there are far more catholics who believe all non-catholics aren't saved. That's part of the reason catholics lead violent uprisings and oppressions against protestants. It wasn't baptists burning catholics at the stake.

I don’t see how to have any kind of unity with someone that doesn’t accept sola scriptura. It just seems to me you MUST have a common base line, there has to be a foundation to build on.
@dman7668
@dman7668 2 месяца назад
We believe most of the same things even if you disagree with some aspects of the Catholic Church. It's not hard to accept Catholics as Christians, because we are.
@Mr.Sir…3
@Mr.Sir…3 2 месяца назад
I understand, but if one doesn’t hold to sola scriptura. Then we can’t really have a honest conversation because the premise of any and every debate is in question. For illustration (a completely made up illustration) If a person believes in Christs deity because The books of Jasper affirmed what the Bible said. We would agree on Christs deity, but that “unity” would be completely irrelevant because the source is different. I’m sorry but if someone can add onething they can add anything. Therefore the root is rotten so the tree is as well. Similar to having unity with Muslims because we are all monotheistic. That unity exists and is totally irrelevant because of the root.
@dman7668
@dman7668 2 месяца назад
@wildbillyd1 I think it's important to realize Catholics are not Muslims and case and point Billy we don't think of Protestants as Muslims either. We are going to have disagreements and disagreements are happening even among protestantism, which is why they were never ever able to come together as one Church unlike the Catholic religion. We still should keep taking. Because these divisions are not going away by not openly discussing them. So let's just keep talking and listening to one another.
@Mr.Sir…3
@Mr.Sir…3 2 месяца назад
FWIW I don’t think of Muslims and Catholics in the same boat, that’s not what I was trying to communicate. That said, I don’t think of them in same boat as true believing protestants either, not that I believe all Catholics are damed. The point I was trying to make is that anywhere I were to find some unity with a non sola scriptura person I would always be wondering why they believe that. Even if they explained it from scripture it wouldn’t really matter because I know (believe is probably a better word) their view of scripture is that it is insufficient, that’s why they have to add to it. I’m not even necessarily saying that’s the correct line of thinking, I’m just being honest. And I honestly can’t imagine having a conversation resulting in Christian unity with someone who doesn’t believe the Bible is the complete, inerrant, infallible, word of God. If someone rejects one of those I view them as the mission field, which is a brick wall to unity. At that point I’m seeking their conversion, unity isn’t even in the conversation. Some of this may come from dealing with my wife’s Mormon family. Also I’ve had conversations with people and have been very close to being in agreement with them only to find out they had different definitions for the same words I was using. Once I figured out what they meant I couldn’t have disagreed more. I’ve seen Baptist and Pentecostals talk about “believing in the Holy Spirit” the Baptist was having a conversation about the trinity, the Pentecostal was have talking about miracles and such, they had unity while in complete disagreement and didn’t even know it. As a result I spend a LOT of time defining terms in conversation, it gets very annoying to myself and them but I find it very necessary. And if a person has any authority equal to scripture I now have to question where that definition even came from. It’s exhausting just to think about lol. Anyway, now that I’ve written a book I need to go to bed. May our differences be resolved in the presence of the Lord some day where full agreement and complete unity will be accomplished. God Bless.

The irony here is that Sola Scriptura does not create a common baseline. Far from it.
