I was making this frosting in 1964 and went in to labor and had to leave my good cake. The recipe use to be on the cocoa can, but mine called for a half can of carnation milk. I have never let him forget that. lol. Your Mom and I cooked a lot alike, we had many discussions. I get so tired of cream cheese iceing.
My grandmother used to make that type of cake but she would make a 10 layer cake using that same type of icing oh my goodness it was so good that icing is what makes it good it's soaks into the cake a little bit and then it gets crusty when it dries and cools down oh my gosh one of my favorite cakes thank you for showing me the three layered version I think I'm going to make that one from now on because it looks a little bit easier to make them the 10 layer LOL thanks for sharing your recipe it just showed up in my news feed and I watched the video and I liked it
Had to watch again. Love that u use a regular knife. My mom had the same cake holder. Just confused about the butter part. When u start talking about the chocolate squares. I got it the second time. I think. That’s a stick n a half of butter. Loved listening to you and your memories.
Looks DELICIOUS! Is it 4 1/2 or 6 tablespoons of COCOA? In the description it says 6 tablespoons COCOA. Can't wait to try both this and the 1 2 3 4 cake.
It is 4½ tablespoons of cocoa. Thanks for catching that mistake and bringing it to my attention. I corrected it in the description box. Glad you're watching!
My sister made this cake and frosting, but she poked holes in the layers with a chopstick and the icing spread through it. So delicious. She called it the "Messed-Up Chocolate Cake".
My mom used to make a chocolate cake with boiled icing and yes, the layers would slide but it was nothing that a few toothpicks wouldn't solve until the frosting got set.
You said the recipe called for two squares of chocolate at one point, then you said 1 1/2 squares at another point. I’m confused! Also, how do you tell when you’ve beat the chocolate mixture enough? Can you estimate about how long to beat? I’m afraid i’ll beat it too long and it will start to harden before I can get it on the cake. My mother and grandmother made this cake every Christmas. I wish I had gotten their recipe while I could have. Thanks for posting.
I just checked my recipe. It is 1½ squares unsweetened chocolate. Several people are asking for this recipe. I think I will go live on my South Alabama Cooking Facebook page this evening, and demonstrate this recipe. You can find me on Facebook and follow, and watch the video.
Do you know what size Tupperware carrier this is? 10 or 12 ". Thanks.. I hope you've posted southern cornbread dressing for Thanksgiving. You are a great cook!!! Thanks Nancy
