it's not just that you can't cook; it's that food seems utterly alien to you.

This is absolutely hilarious to watch for someone who has been cooking for years. But after all, you're not doing bad at all for a "first" time. Some watching tips: 1. Gordon Ramsay's Ultimate Cookery Course (is on RU-vid). Goes into the basic techniques. However, I have no clue whether the base level is maybe is right for you. Otherwise, come back to it after you have a little more experience. 2. Chef John from FoodWishes. Has some great recipes and is the most wonderful guy to learn cooking from. 3. Basics with Babish. No experience with myself. But heard some good stuff about him and a quick glance suggests he really goes into basics. 4. Jamie Oliver's FoodTube. Not as active as it used to be. But there is a huge backlog of simple to more complicated dishes. Good luck! O, and if you'd ever be in The Netherlands, I'd be happy to give you some cooking tips in real life.

Your cluelessness is hilarious. :-D And a bit adorable, in a way. ;-) Please don't cut your spaghetti with a knife though, it's infuriating. While we're on the subject of knives: The knife you were using in the beginning, the one with the teeth, is a bread knife. You would have much more luck with a knife from your knife block.
@mothercromby

watching the sharp knives in the knife block go unused throughout the video was painful.
@nickandrewmarc
@nickandrewmarc 6 лет назад
I just saw that you mentioned in the description that the knives in the knife block are blunt. Try sharpening them with a honing steel, in most cases that should do the trick.

@stefanomarani3645
@stefanomarani3645 6 лет назад
Edmund Burke it’s called ‘spaghetti al ragù’. Actually, spaghetti is not the most fitting pasta to go with that sauce (the RAGÙ). Traditionally, we use ‘tagliatelle’, which is a larger type of spaghetti. The sauce is not called ‘bolognese’ but ‘ragù’. I am bolognese because I’m from Bologna lol (it’s like saying that he’s British)

Hi Jake, I think you shot yourself in the foot a bit here and chose a bolognaise on the “luxurious” end - there are other recipes for bolognaise on GoodFood - in the budget section or student recipes which have far less ingredients so are much cheaper and are much quicker and easier to make. More convenient for a meal you’re cooking mid-week whilst you’re working. Maybe give a chicken curry a go from scratch? Again GoodFood has tonnes of different recipes :) A top tip which often many people forget is seasoning - sufficient salt and pepper can transform what you’re cooking. Really enjoy your videos, keep up the good work!

1) this was hilarious 2) get chopped tomatoes from the supermarket not plummed. Plummed are bigger and you want them chopped 3) it doesn't need to be cooked for 1hr+ lol 20 minutes it's fine (put the spaghetti on at 10 mins) 4) get a sharp knife 5) get a garlic grater 6) almost all recipes you find online are mega fancy. Most meals can be ready in less than an hour. I recommend getting yourself a cook book for students (such as nosh). -3rd year uni student

Some friendly advice from an avid student chef: you can definitely replace fresh herbs with the dried cupboard versions. It may not be the “proper” way but it saves so much time and chopping etc. Also - you can buy garlic paste that works really well if you CBA to chop it. I prefer the fresh but if you don’t have time it works. Get yourself some dried herbs and garlic paste ☺️
@emohyou
@emohyou 6 лет назад
PS - you generally peel all root vegetables before chopping them 😊 Keep cooking though - it’s the only way

There are recipes with 5 or 6 ingredients. I stick with those most of the time. Here is one example for a summer-salad for 4 persons. 1/4 Watermelon, 1/2 cucumber, a bunch of peppermint, 4 spoons of olive-oil, 100 g couscous, 2 lemons Cook the couscous, chop watermelon and cucumber, squeeze the lemon and put it all together with the oil and the chopped peppermint. Also add 100 ml of water. Put it in the fridge for 2 hours. I just saw your 'learn javascript in 12 minutes' video you made 4 years ago. I guess it's a little bit naive to hope for second part? Great stuff anyway. Thanks, Jake : )

Jake, cooking can be a social thing .... find someone who can cook and ask them to show you how ... I LOVE teaching people how to cook … making things from scratch is frequently waaaay more expensive than a ready meal and takes some effort, but it is also quite relaxing if you have the day free and should result in better tasting end product ... like anything it is all a matter of practice ❤️😃

Hold on... in England you put bacon in spaghetti bolognese! From an Italian, you should be buying sweet pork sausage and take the sausage meat out of the casing. The pork gives bolognese its signature flavor.

Try a simple curry, just grab lots of pre-chopped veg, onion, tinned tomatoes, curry powder, and basmati rice. Chop if necessary to bite size chunks, and stir into a pan with a small amount of oil (olive). Fry lightly, add curry powder, the amount depends on how spicy you want it - maybe three teaspoons for a mild curry, depending on the powder; stir well, add tomatoes, add more water if necessary (at this point I would add a tablespoon of ground almonds). Put basmati rice into a pan of boiling water. Cook everything until the rice is done (about 10 or 15 mins, test a little rice, if it's hard, it needs longer). For a generous portion of rice, use about half a mugful of dried rice per person: beware, it expands lots when cooked. Create a bed of rice and put some of the curry on top. Note: the curry will keep for several days in the fridge and tastes better the longer you've kept it, but don't keep for longer than a week (in a very cold fridge). Simples. And a great way to use up left over veg. If you use meat in the mix, cook for longer.

You’ve cooked one of the so-called “authentic” spagbol recipes. There are much simpler ways to cook a sauce. One could just use onion, carrot (you can grate it), mince, tomato and dried herbs. For the tomato you could use a packet or jar of passata (sieved tomatoes), or just a tin. One reason it was popular when I was a student (before you were born), was that one could make a large batch of sauce to last all week. For some reason the flavour would improve with age. An alternative is just to make up a batch of tomato sauce that you can use with recipes. You could have bolognese one day and puttanesca another. Another cheap and quick to prepare meal, if you like rice, is risotto. Roast dinners are also easy and you c an get on with something else while it cooks.
