God bless Mr LaRue. I didn't know what I was going to feed the kids for dinner. I just happened to have stolen all the ingredients for this lovely dish.
SCTV is where John Candy demonstrated his wide comedic range. His movie roles were good but were somewhat stereotypical pathetic bumbler roles. He could do so much more. SCTV would not have been the classic it was without him.
You definitely see JLR's influence on Ricky in this skit, especially when La Rue keeps changing course without reservation. At one point, he is lauding the meal for apparently smelling good. The next, he is clearly put off by the aroma and wonders how he wound up in this predicament, remarking "why don't you people (who I am helping) go get a job or something?" It's analogous to Ricky going from one lie to the next in a bid to evade arrest. Another parallel is Ricky being delusional about his lifestyle; he genuinely believes he is a good samaritan (as does JLR).
It's hard to make me laugh. Most "comedy" leaves me cold, so I am grateful when I come across something that really makes me laugh hard. Thank you for sharing this.
I would absolutely have loved to see John Candy make a guest appearance on Hill Street blues playing Kiel Martins brother. Anyone understand the connection and round about reference?
I disagree .. Eddie Murphy is one of the funniest and thankfully we still have him.. but I agree that John candy was one of a kind tho.. closest we had to him was Chris Farley (which in my opinion wasn’t as funny as candy) but gone too :(
I was thinking the same thing! Maybe the route today would be to go with dry cat food and soften it up in that water a bit. Never mind that it is mostly hog snouts and chicken entrails and not fit for human consumption. A little time at 350 degrees will solve that problem!
Chef Johnnie La Rue .,. Eating grass from a park , cat food in a can and a cigarette butt thrown in for a tasty tidbit… Julia Child went to his Le Cordon Bleu . Academy of cooking with Johnnie La Rue .. the Best 👍
sad but true. i'm there now. welfare is only just covering the fee my bank charges for the privelege of them taking my money after rent and that's on OW. yay toronto. if it weren't for my kind landlord i would be on the streets and catfood would be a luxury. i'm only 62
