We visited Palo Duro Canyon State Park June 5-6, 2016, and were fortunate to observe this greater roadrunner perform a call. Better yet, James got a video. Other observers say that this is a mating call. I don't know that for certain.
When the Road Runner makes that noise, they sound similar to a Morning Dove. They also make a high pitch chirp too. I love their little stripe across their eyes, with red, white and blue, it kinda signifies the American flag 🇺🇸. From a Canadian 🇨🇦😀

Lesser roadrunners are a smaller sub-species of the binomial nomenclature Geococcyx velox as opposed to the greater Geococcyx californianus. As mentioned lessers are smaller both in body and beak size to their Greater cousins. Lessers also have a more southern geographical range from Mexico to Guatemala and the Yucatan Peninsula.
