Cool Crossing of Lake Michigan and the living historic landmark the car ferry steamer Badger

One of my favorite things to do is crossing Lake Michigan aboard the steam car ferry BADGER. I made my first trip aboard the BADGER on Labor Day weekend 1994. I found it a great way to get west into Wisconsin. Years later I drove around Chicago and after experiencing that nightmare just once I swore to never do it again.
Avoiding the trip through Chicago was exactly why the railroads, 100 years earlier, had decided to use car ferries to cut the corner and more efficiently deal with Lake Michigan. These vessels were monsters in their time and challenged the lake in all weather. Their development is thumb-nailed in this video. Of course if I did the entire history the show would run several hours- so this is simply a quick history. Yes- there were shipwrecks, but that's something to be illustrated in later videos.

Took this a couple of years ago from Manituac to Ludington. Brought the car. Got a private room. Great, great experience. I mean truly awesome. Amazing food, gracious staff. A really fine operation.

We use to go Coho fishing in Ludington and I always liked seeing the car ferries. I remember the Badger and Spartan coming into port or leaving the harbor. This brought back a lot of great memories of those trips. Thank you for sharing this.

I really want to do a crossing on the Badger. In a few weeks, I am going to Muskegon with a group of scouts. We are taking them to sleep on the USS Silverside. Maybe I can sneak up to Ludington and catch a glimpse of the Badger. Also, on July 7th, I was at an outdoor concert in downtown Toledo. The Saginaw was heading upriver to the train silos. I snapped so really awesome pics of the ship going past the stage. Wish I could share them with you.

Wes, Thanks for your books and videos about ships of the Great Lakes. In the 50's my father ran the American Excelsior plant in Marinette, WI. He shipped 100's of freight cars full of bales of excelsior on Ann Arbor ferry from Menominee, MI, thru the Sturgeon Bay ship canal, to Frankfort, MI. We often rode the ferry, enjoying free passage & staterooms to visit family in lower MI. I remember the auto loading crew riding the endless belt lift to get on & off the car deck. Great memories! I still ride the Badger every couple years to rekindle the good times... Thanks.

We have ridden the Badger 3 times, and all 3 rides were so different because of the weather and time of day. The first trip from Manitowoc to Ludington was delayed a bit due to cargo loading issue, but the weather was great and it meant we got to see a beautiful sunset sinking into Lake Michigan just before we arrived in Ludington. The Ludington North Breakwater light was a beautiful sight glowing in the twilight colors of the faded sunset while we docked. The round trip we took in 2022, the trip to Manitowoc was packed in fog all the way across. You could barely see the Ludington and Manitowoc lighthouses as we passed by them, as it was so foggy. But we got some great photos as we passed by them, and the evening before the trip we stood in Ludington Harbor watching the green Breakwater lighthouse flashing as the Badger sailed past it in the gray gloomy peasoup fog coming in to harbor. That made for some spooky cool photos as she emerged from the fog and passed the lighthouse. The last trip back from Manitowoc was rain all the way but that just meant we spent more time playing Badger Bingo! 😍 And won some swag we display in our living room now

Let's hope that the Spartan comes back as a modernized diesel powered car ferry, I understand that the chances of it happening are slim to none and that the Spartan would probably be more economical as a barge but it would be a better alternative than to continue sitting. We shall see what the future holds for her.

It's definitely a luxury ride based on the prices. $500+ for three people round trip with a car. But for us, it cut off many driving hours coming home from the Keweenaw Peninsula to Detroit area, 4 hours less driving across the U.P.'s Seney Stretch 😁 And driving to Duluth Minnesota from Detroit area and then back again it really made a DIFFERENCE in driving times both ways.

Hey Wes, good video. I hear the Badger drop anchor from my shop in Ludington, and watch her come and go often. One correction, both the Pere Marquette 18(I) and Manistique, Marquette, and Northern No. 1 (later Milwaukee) had full length passenger accommodations when built, long before the Cities of Saginaw and Flint.

@@therake8897I was looking for this exact reply. If nobody said anything about the fate of the City of Midland 41 (the year it was built) then I was going to say it. Else it should be mentioned that the Spartan is permanently docked in Ludington serving as repair parts supply for the Badger and the City of Midland was renamed as the barge Pere Marquette 41 pushed by the tug Undaunted.
@mellissadalby1402
@mellissadalby1402 11 месяцев назад
I wonder how many of these open stern car carriers suffered the same fate as that of the Pere Marquette number 18? Sure, they must be a lot of fun on a sunny day with calm waters, but they will surely sink like a rock in high following seas.
@42lookc
@42lookc 11 месяцев назад
Looking up the Pere Marquette 18, I find it strange that she sank with 27 lives on board, and 2 more from the 17, making 29, total, the same as the Edmund Fitzgerald. Why is the loss of 29 on the Fitz so, so famous (or infamous), but the loss of 29 with the Pere Marquette 18 isn't? They both sank suddenly without certainty in the cause of their demise. Was it that the Fitz sinking so long after many more safeguards were put in place?
@shawnkeith1164
@shawnkeith1164 11 месяцев назад
@@42lookc the difference is three-fold. First, the advent of TV. We were able to follow the sinking and search efforts virtually in real-time. Next, in 1910 sinkings were commonplace, sadly. While they were a shock, life went on. By 1975 sinkings were a rarity. Third, nobody wrote a haunting song that topped the charts when the #18 sank.
@shawnkeith1164
@shawnkeith1164 11 месяцев назад
Pere Marquette 18 was the second such loss. Marquette & Bessemer #2 disappeared on Lake Erie less than a year earlier, she still hasn't been found. Both of those were truly open-stern, with no protective gate, though there is reason to believe the #18 had other causes. In 1923 the Ann Arbor No. 4 sank just inside the breakwall at Frankfort/Elberta MI. She had a protective gate but it was inadequate, though it kept her afloat long enough to make port. Barely. A couple miles out and it would have been disastrous, as it was there were no fatalities and injuries were minimal. In 1929 the Mikwaukee (a virtual carbon-copy of the #18) disappeared. Her gate had been damaged and she had no ship-to-shore communication. She was found off Milwaukee in the early 70s.
@authorwes
@authorwes 11 месяцев назад
Simple- different era. In the PM18 (1) era communications were done by the brand new wireless telegraph and then spread in the newspapers. It was a time when losses of life on the lakes had been commonplace for decades. Plus- no one wrote a song about it that was broadcast nation wide. By the Fitz loss, word of her missing was spread nation-wide on the nightly news and then details followed, again, nation wide. No one had been lost on the lakes in a major vessel in nearly a full decade (Morrell- 1966) so it was a big story.
