this works because the flux on the outside of the rod is relatively slow to melt, which maintains the gap to hold the arc. Bowman distribution had a rod that they would demonstrate by starting a weld and then walking off. It didn't produce a better weld when left unmanned, just maintained an arc, but enabled a person who had little skill to run a better bead without sticking the rod.

Only good for where a very weak weld would be sufficient and you don't care about appearance. That said, for the proper thicknesses, distance from the target, and amperage, this type of method can do a very good job of both strength and appearance -- there are professional machines to do hands free welding that allow for making such adjustments.

@walterbunn280
@walterbunn280 8 лет назад
Ehhh.... so the concept is okay, but there's some realities here that the video could have addressed. Because this is essentially an automated process, you need to make sure your materials are prepared correctly before you weld them together. The angle iron used was heavily rusted and painted, which would only cause issues with the weld and the iron chemistry after the fact. If you're going to copy this, grind the metal clean, scrub it with soap and water, and then degrease with alcohol, acetone, andor paint thinner, possibly in that order. Although degreasing to that extent might be too much. The next bit that is worth noting, do not use wood. Aluminum cans cut into strips work better and keep the weld at a higher temperature for a longer period of time. Finally, the test weld shown is very brittle. you can tell because the weld bead isn't continuous and has different colors in it. You need a lossy additive. something like steel wool placed on top of the welding stick. This is simply a secondary source of molten metal that could help fuse things after words. Any way.... this is still an interesting idea and it does have the beginnings of a useful technique. It needs more development.Preparing surfaces before you start welding things, using appropriate non-interfering materials during the welding, and compensating for melt flow are all things that need to be addressed.
@andyjones7121
@andyjones7121 8 лет назад
Walter Bunn Thanks for an actual useful comment. I'm not sure I follow the aluminum strip part though. Is the wood still used over the aluminum strips? Does the aluminum melt? Also, why does this work? I would've assumed there'd be an electrical connection the entire length of the rod simultaneously, but it actually welded from the tip down. Is this because the core is more conductive? What would happen if you tried this with MIG wire or with aluminum (to weld aluminum)?
@nilyed1
@nilyed1 8 лет назад
Andy Jones thanks for a smart comment man, please explain about the cans pls
@walterbunn280
@walterbunn280 8 лет назад
No Prob bob. With regards to the questions, The wood would not be used at all. The aluminum would burn off, but some of it may actually vaporize. Aluminum oxidizes at a much lower temperature then it's melting temperature. Part of the reason aluminum is better to use in this specific case is because the wood uses up some of the heat energy to become charcoal. If the aluminum absorbs enough energy to melt. it will burn instead, and then it makes thermite. As far as how the welder is making the electrical connection, I'm not 100% certain myself. It looks like it's supposed to be a TIG welder, which works quite differently from a MIG welder. In such systems, it's my understanding that the piece your welding isn't melting as much as the stick in the welder is melting and flowing into/onto the metal work surface. it's probably got something to do with the oxide layer in the stick and the voltage setting on the TIG. I'd assume a high current low voltage situation, but I'm not 100% on this point. Actually, this might be why the surfaces weren't cleaned, but I'm iffy on this point.
@andyjones7121
@andyjones7121 8 лет назад
Walter Bunn I guess I was thinking that the wood would apply pressure and help insulate the work piece from ambient air, but you're implying that it's taking heat away instead of insulating. Makes sense. Aluminum oxidizes whenever it touches air. If it didn't, it would always be very reactive. If you put aluminum in water with sodium hydroxide (lye), the lye removes the oxide later and the aluminum reacts with water to produce lots of hydrogen and aluminum oxide. (Gallium also removes the oxide layer causing the same effect) I actually made a hot water heater using this method, using recycled cans and feeding the H2 to an innertube for storage, and then fed to the water heater (it was a LNG heater originally). The point of my rambling is that aluminum always has an oxide layer because if it didn't, your can of Coke would explode as the aluminum reacted and created hydrogen until it blew up! This is also an extremely exothermic reaction and can create more heat than igniting the hydrogen! I'm getting off topic I suppose... I don't know much about welding, or if aluminum and rust (thermite) is a good or bad thing in welding. I'm assuming you don't want rust OR any dissimilar metals when welding.

Welder here. Not trying to be rude or anything but that's a garbage way to weld. The little bit of the weld I did see was all over the place, seldomly connected. You need to have the arc facing towards your joint or the metal will just be sprayed everywhere... As you saw with the result Yeah, it may have been stuck together but not well

@walterbunn280
@walterbunn280 8 лет назад
Ehh.. I would think that aluminum is better, but i agree that a different metal plate would work better then wood. Using copper do you get boiling steel sprays often? Cause that's actually one of the issues of copper thermites. Copper explosively reacts at those temperatures. iron-aluminum thermites just get really hot. The boiling/popping problem is also why they can't weld vintage aircraft from World war 2. many of those plains use a alloy of aluminum that contains high amounts of copper and it is impossible to extinguish once it ignites.

this is not a good way of welding, This can MUCH better! and before you weld this rusted material, you must first grind this material Regards from the Netherlands Rob.

build one like that and test it in a press i bet it doesn't work. try a larger rod for a better pattern and i should work.

can someone reply whether one can use a plasma cutter with a nozzle to weld with. using the torch to heat the metal rod to melt and fuse two other things together. or could you use the power box of plasma to connect an arc welding handset to

I can't see the weld as some adds suddenly spring up just when the weld is finished. Obviously must be an excellent weld if he is trying to hide it with adds.

yes it tack welds it in a lot of spots but that isn't a real weld and would never pass for any professional work. there is no consistency or penetration

Don't you have to clean the rust off? I haven't welded anything since high school, i was lousy at it, but my weld looked better than this

That was cool its just a demonstration IF the metal was prepped it would have way better penetration everybody knows you cant weld on top of rust, paint, grease etc.
