I love that you realize that "music" is the language that unites us all, and you don't just restrict yourself to "Black" drummers, "Hispanic" drummers, or ANY drummers that play within a particular style. I love "Buddy Rich" "Dave Weckl" "Jeff Porcaro", as musch as I love "Tony Williams" "Nate Smith" "Manu Katche", and "Clyde Stubblefield" and "Chongito".... Keep it up.... I appreciate you, and LOVE what you do. :)

I first learned this lick after watching Gadd on Zildjian Day in New York. Probably 1986 or so. He did it, and so do I, with the left hand doing a cross-stick. Awesome lick!!! Love the "Give me some chicken and a biscuit" analogy... Brilliant!

Awesome. I love adding to my vovab. Having spent a good amount of time working on different ways to use my 6 stroke rolls (hands, diffrent timings, and stickingd, between hands and feel etc...) This one came quick for me. Gotta love when practice pays off!

Steve Gadd shows this lick in the beginning of "Up Close" (drum video)! But he begins it with two extra LL ghost notes before the first hi-hat accent.

Thank you for transcribing this lick. It always was one of my favorite of Gadd, but I never seen anyone show how to play it. I think it’s that lick which Steve uses in Tom Scott “Dirty Old Man”.

Michael B. Porter hey man when i started playing drums around my mid teens i was terrible. i thought you had to hit really hard and have big movements in your arms from watching keith moon type drummers. my time was terrible my fills were rushed (i can still hear a rushed fill sometimes in some drummers) i loved playing but i was not a natural as some guys are. for some reason i started practicing with a pad and meteonome and swear by this method today. with the metronome i immediately could hear how i was rushing fills and not being even. my fills weren't "clean". my playing (tho still weak) got better immediately. then over a few years i got to be ok. i never played anything f2f hat amazing but what i played was decent. i didnt totally suck. then as time went on i got better til there were gigs i could say to myself i actually played pretty good and even better then one or two of the other drummers on the same gig. im 56 now. I'm still not so good i st and out at a gig as "wow that drummer" but ive got to a point where i can eeally add to a song and i inderstand how to apply some rudiments to the kit and how to mix feet. n hands , not overplay AND SOMETIMES IM PRETTY GOOD. i hope someday to play in a convincing boham style and play swing jazz pretty good too. and last before i die to come close to playing like those gospel drummers (all hail them). but the very best start to me is learning to play relaxed in time with a metronome. cheers

I saw Gregg Bissonette run down this lick at a clinic in 1982 when he was just coming up. It was at a small drum shop near Cincy Ohio but it was recorded and I have it on VHS somewhere LOL! Nice breakdown bro spot on! I love this riff cause it can be applied to several music genres. It's no wonder why every producer wanted Gadd!

that lick is in the Steve Gadd "Up Close Book" several times, but anyway, this is a cool lesson. And sometimes Steve Gadd plays this lick with a rimclick instead of snare and opened the hihat on the first stroke, sounds also great.

Great work, Rob. I, too, am a Gaddaholic. You can also check Steve on his usage of paradiddles btwn sd, hh, and bd across the bar lines. Believe there is evidence of that on his NYC clinic live last year or year before. I'll research the video. - Dennis

Holy shit I can’t believe Nate Morton commented on your vid! Honestly for real Rob you just lay it down about as perfect as Anybody can, and you just give Such great lessons and insight to all the layers of the instrument and groove. My teacher gave me this sheet music for this groove he knew Steve real well from Rochester and Eastman, i’m from Buffalo 40 minutes away got to meet Steve once at a clinic he is like Yoda of the drums

The first time I ever heard Steve play that was on "Dirty Old Man" when the Tom Scott New York Connection album came out in 1974 or 75. They came to Atlanta and played at the Great Southeast Music Hall. I got up from my seat and tried to get a better view of his right hand. His version is a little more aggressive, I think.

Once again, I'm late to the party!! Oh Well, better late than never! Isn't this just a paradiddle-diddle followed by 2 kicks, landing on the down beat at the end? I'm glad you figured it out for me! It is so hard (for me) to figure out detailed parts and sticking by just listening. Great party Rob, thanks for all you do!!!
