I'm South Indian Tamil by birth. Today I bow my head with my two hands together and I pray 🙏🏽 giving thanks to my Indian - possible ancestors. They have endured great suffering in their journey of life and in their suffering they have given me an opportunity in my life. May they RIP. The word ‘Coolie’ is definitely nothing to be ashamed off or embarrassed about, it basically means ‘Hard worker’. If anything, the Europeans should be ashamed as to the suffering they have caused the world, they have tried to empower the whole world due their greedy. My neighbour in London was from Guyana. She had no idea where her people were from in India. As an Irish person I was horrified. Place and roots are essential to identity in our culture. To have your identity taken from you has to be one of the most cruel acts that human can carry out against human.
As an Irish person you should also know how 'The English' practiced their methods in Ireland first. Enslaved 'Red Shanks' sent off to the Barbadoes. Strip the land of indigenous wood for ship building. Take the land and rent it back to the natives. There was no understanding of 'Rent' in Ireland so much so that when they had no money to pay they used to say 'Tá me in arrears' (I am in arrears). Language and culture outlawed.

I am a Indian Jamaican, and while growing up there I felt different and didn't fit in. Although I was half Indian and half black I look much Indian and was call Coolie, I wouldn't understand why until this documentary. Thank you so much for this I have clarity.
I am from the Caribbean. I have great respect for my ancestors. One of my uncle's mother was impregnated by the son of the plantation owner. She was thrown out into the streets when her pregnancy was known. He grew up in the streets barefoot and dirt poor. Being half caste he was neither white nor Indian but he embraced his Indian heritage and even learned to speak Hindi. Today he is a very successful businessman and quite well off. God is good and merciful.

Makes my heart bleeds. My great grandparents and grandparents were from India. My great grandmother was abducted from home under the pretext that her husband was involved in an accident and the overseer would be taking her to him. She had two children a son and a daughter. The son was the older of the two so she asked her neighbor to babysit him and she took the daughter and went with the, "White Man." He put her on a ship and shipped her off to British Guiana. She was ill the entire journey to British Guiana. She was made to take her baby daughter to the cane fields and cut cane. The advantage taken on these people were really sad. My father despised the British and especially, the king and the entire royal family. British Guiana taxes were sent to England. British Guiana was't being developed because all the taxes after all expenses were met, was sent to England so they could further develop that country. After all these countries and islands gained independence, British Guiana, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, etc., those places started progressing at a slow rate. Up to now, British Guiana, which is now Guyana is the poorest country in South America. The majority of inhabitants left Guyana and migrated to England, Canada and the USA. Of course the suffering started again because to come to a strange land and start over took much courage. These were mostly East Indians. Now, the white man can't keep them back. They're progressing in leaps and bounds.

Best documentary ever! I am sure it took this man a lot of courage to make this documentary. This documentary needs to be shown in india because they are still suffering from mental slavery. Its good to know your history no matter how awful and in human that was so you can truly honor your ancestors who endured all that so you can be where your are today. It debilitate you from having a power to fight for justice that's why most Indians never fought or revolted against the systemic slavery their ancestors endured. The Delawares called the tribe the same thing, but their word is "Tallageni", the root of Allegheny. Cherokee is the way the uk wasp chose to pronounce Tsalagi.
My great-grandfather was one of these coolies, arrived in Jamaica in the late 19th century. I bet those poor people didn't know what they were signing up for.

Wow, I am British, most British people know nothing of this. Of course we know about slavery as it is taught in schools. When I was a very young man I was sent to British Guiana as a soldier during the trouble in 1964/1965. I can recall a police corporal called King a large blackman, at the police station in a place called Wismar referring to East Indians as coolies. I thought it was a racial slur. I wish I had seen this before I went there. I can remember the terrible poverty. We had very little contact with the people unless it was in the course of our duty. I have since had some doubts about Britains roll in what went on at that time. I do know I was a pawn in a very dirty game.

I am a descendent of an Indian indentured labourer. India, via Trinidad, and born in the UK. I am so proud of my descendents. It was a momentous decision to leave home, and family, but poverty is a great driver to seek a better life for all. Britain is responsible for so much suffering over the centuries. My respect goes out to all those tortured souls.

Well I always told my kids, school will give them the foundation, the tools, but if you want to become truly educated, you have to do that outside school. School is there to teach you things that will prepare you to maintain the status quo, that’s it, nothing more than that......if you want to expand your knowledge of the world, you have to do that for yourself.

Good Video.......just a thought came to my mind......we could have blood relatives in Trinidad,Guyana,Mauritius ,Suriname and Fiji.Think about it ,when the bloody British took our ancestors to these countries , they may have separated family members,who may have gone on separate voyages to these countries and started a new beginning and may never have met again....hopefully there is enough logs or records to help us find our roots back in India.
My great grandmother from six or so generations ago was kidnapped from kerala, India and was separated from her husband and family. She was pregnant with twins when she was kidnapped and ended up having her kids in Fiji. Our family stayed in Fiji and became a government power, but eventually migrated to the U.S.

My dads side of the family were East Indian but sent to Trinidad before the 1900's my nan is native of the island half black with Spanish & his dad was half black & East Indian they came to Britain in the early 1950's
Well the Maharaja's were tempted into being British men and woman. The English didn't have to work hard to convince them to trade their wealth in return to learning the British lifestyle. No, black people in the Caribbean are not versed in Indo-Caribbean history by and large. They don't know what Indian groups came, what part of India (present day Pakistan or Bangladesh's or Afghanistan?), what languages they spoke or what their experiences were like.

The 'it was up to them' generally comes from a misunderstanding of the types of people the British targeted. Mainly low-class, uneducated Dalits and Shudras who did not know to read or write (save for a few other castes). Those that did know to read or write did not know English at that time. They were also threatened into indentureship, and even kidnapped. The contracts they received had different conditions written in their languages than the actual contracts in English; in this way, they were deceived into giving up their freedom.
People forced out of their country by a stranger from another country to serve someone or to be exploited against their will and people forced to immigrate by their choice because of economic hardship,famine are completely two different things.You can t compare them.

To be fair, Britain allowed "actual" (without calling it another name) slavery to continue in Nigeria until the 1960's. It was official policy there until then. Also, don't forget, most Britons themselves were often no more than serfs as Gandhi pointed out on his visits to the slums of London. Most couldn't read either and were often transported for virtually no reason...it was the Rich of England and sadly, they're still about.
