Yep, found that out on my first trip to Oshkosh. About 15 miles out from Oshkosh the iPad turned off! Imagine my panic. I now use the X-Naut cooler too.
We lucked out by mounting ours right in front of the vent from outside. Plenty of cooling airflow. I addd a question for you on your duel mag video ref inspection. Thanks
I have the same setup for my iPad Mini and it worked fine with one exception. In the Texas heat and desert west, especially at lower altitudes where cabin ambient temperature is a bit higher, the fans proved insufficient. I have an older one and the thing has FOUR fans! To remedy the direct sun and to stop fighting the heat issue enough so the fans could do their job I looked at solutions at both Sun ‘N Fun and Oshkosh. They have some solutions but at a high cost and they seemed flimsy for minimal benefit. I designed and built my own solution. Turns out a piece of small brass rod, a piano hinge and some fasteners worked great for building a movable sun shield frame covered with some inexpensive material. The end result is a physical cover blocking about ⅔ of the screen from direct sun. That was enough to allow the fans to keep the thing from overheating. You may say the Xnaught is enough, and for the most part, that proves true. However, it seems my need was more extreme on the yoke and this fixed the issue. It’s not bad looking for a home brew setup and the reason this was even possible is the Xnaught has ventilation holes I used for the fasteners. I was hesitant to drill holes for an experiment I didn’t know would work for the over high cost. Unfortunately, you’re right about the various unique sizing. My iPad died, it was not economical to repair, so I replaced it with the newer 11” iPad Air. Now not sure what I want to do about heat management. Using a generic/temporary solution untilI figure it out. I may wind up reverting to the Xnaught regardless of the price. I can say is the Xnaught is an excellent product and if that’s all you need, I certainly second your recommendation. And it allows for DIY solutions. Keep the videos coming. I check for them at least weekly.
