One time my neighbour's car was making a weird sound coming from the timing belt. And while it was idling, the belt broke and I heard a loud clank. But it didn't bend any valves. Ran fine after I replaced the belt

I just done this job on a 08 vw passat... the timing chain on the other side for the intake cam was broken... so be sure to check that... the car fired right up after putting a chain on it with no bent valves.... you can take the oil cap off and kinda see the front camshaft, have someone crank it over and see if the cam is spinning. If not the the chain is broken.

Do you have a endoscope? There's cheap ones you attach to your phone. Take out the spark plugs and inspect the cylinders.

You should check to see if the intake cam is rotating by removing the oil cap and looking while someone cranks. This engine most likely had oil pressure (very common) issues which caused the top end to stop spinning. I wouldn’t be surprised if the timing chain is also broke. Yes this engine has a chain in the back belt in front.

This has been one of your top shelf videos in that you presented that DREADED two word item, 'TIMING BELT' along with all the fear & expense associated with the little unknown demon in such engines. You DID WIN because you dove right in, took us along, gave an expert instructional video to ease fears in an attempt to make it run. I think you accomplished as much running thru the process in a manner to remove the fear most people have regardless if it ran or not. Your technique to put people 'at ease' has more merit than hearing that thing run. I did own two of those Passats.... & the timing belt snapped prematurely on me while driving. Like you said many times, its an interference engine and those valves were bent. Valves were only available @ the dealer which i did.... or the wreckers. I wondered why you kept going knowing the internal damage?? This video made me kringe.... it wasnt worth the time from the get go..... anyways, i admire ur hard efforts & ur positive attitude!!!

I like that you tried Randy and I commend you but the best content you put out is when you actually dig into these cars like this. I wish you would have spent a few more episodes breaking it down to figure out the issue.

couple things before you condemn the car take the spark plugs out and put a bit of oil in the cylinders , spray some starting fluid in the intake and try a forced start buy pressing the gas to 75 % while cranking

Randy, that socket bar thing, is really handy you stick the socket onto it and push it to either end stick it on the bolt and pull. Or stick it in the middle and pull with two hands. If that makes sense

The bar with the handle in your tool box connect to the long bar to help you remove bolts or spark plugs with two hands

The low fuel light is on you can try putting some gas in the tank and give it a try.

Hey Randy. Timing belt fun. Put some new valves in the head. All new valves and seals from e bay, 29.95, from Blackhorse Racing. Top end set from Victor Reintz, 60.00. Lap em in with all new seals. She will run like new.

To get rid of smells, flying wheels uses a small pool chlorine ‘puck’ in a little water in a container overnight inside the car...and it works! I tried it with smoke smells and dog smells. Cheap and effective.

I'd be willing to bet the intake to exhaust timing chain snapped due to the high pressure fuel pump. I just bought the same. Love research. It's like watching a movie a couple times. You see different theories every time you watch. Awsome vid

Just after 5:50 you are holding a "torx plus" drive. Notice the thicker splines with a hexagonal design. The elliptical grinding produces a contact surface that is at right angles to the torque, meaning a stronger grip and less cam out. Hold a torx and a torx plus in your hand and the difference is obvious. Tool carts often have a "TP" label on the torx plus sockets. The most annoying thing about German cars like this one are the triple square fasteners, like the screws that hold the upper timing belt cover in place in the 2.0T FSI engines. Use either torx in those and you'll strip them out.

That tool is a sliding T handle. You use an extension with it to get to hard to reach nuts. The sliding handle allows for tight spots...

an inspection camera in the spark plug holes can show you exactly how many valves are bent. I just bought a car with a broken timing belt from the auction, they said it was flooded but zero signs of water. I was looking in the spark plug holes for water, there was none but there were a couple shiny spots on the piston. I couldve counted exactly how many valves made contact

To late now, but I’m pretty sure you were 180 out on the crank for your timing mark. Number one cylinder has to be at TDC when when the timing hashes line up on the crank. That engine had absolutely no compression. It should have had some compression. With bent valves we should have heard uneven compression while the starter was cranking the engine over. Best way I can explain this is the engine turns fast part of a rotation, then slow for the rest of the rotation and continues this pattern.

This video inspired me to try that this weekend. So thanks for the instructions

I agree man sometimes you have to sit down and do a cost-benefit analysis. Like that 71 Buick GS on my channel I’ve had people yell at me for doing an LS swap, the problem is the Buick GS Stage One engine was long gone and in its place was a 1970 Buick 350 engine that thing had a bad oil pump that totally sheared off inside made a complete mess. I had the 6.0 LS engine sitting around it’s what I can afford so that’s what’s going to take to get it back on the road that’s what we’re gonna do I had people email me message me and out right comment that they’re leaving because I was doing such a thing

Doing a head swap might have content value that would offset the cost. Meanwhile, check compression and pull the valve cover and look for excessive valve clearance. However, spinning over, it doesn't sound like it has compression.

That Honda accord that I cleaned up on my channel I had to run the O-Zone machine in it for four days straight and then let it air out at for two nice summer days. Lol it was bad

Heater hose: Yes you can use needle nose pliers to clamp it off. But for cryin' in the sink! Put some rubber hose on the jaws of the vice grips to protect the hose you are trying to clamp off.

Dude, im a mechanic i have a compression issue with the same engine, I putted some engine oil inside the chamber via spark plug, and strats just fine, maybe its not the engine head, sometimes is the cilinder wall warn out. (its not a solution is just a test)

Put it on the 2 wheel half trailer (I am forgetting the names of stuff, sigh) and let Mike at Wierd Beard Auto Sales have a crack at it. Maybe he can part it out and you and he can make a profit (after paying your expenses to get the car) from sale of the parts. As you know, good parts are more expensive by themselves, than built up into a car.

You could try the rope trick down the plug hole....look it up on google 👍🏻

Its a t bar, its what was used before a ratchet was invented. Still good to have because they are stronger than breaker bars, you just have to stick a pipe on the handle for leverage.

You should get one of those chest mounts or head mount for your go pro so you can use your hands better. They have a nice kit with all kinds of accessories and mounts on amazon. Keep up the good work brother.

Randy, After ether injection, I heard no pop or hit from the cylinders. Seems to me you still may have an ECM issue. Please check spark plugs for firing. Don't give up just yet! Get a Good nights rest and try again tomorrow with some more troubleshooting.

I got lucky i bought a 98 CRV that was listed as mechanical damage. It was a peddle car. It had a broken Timing belt. I put an old belt i had laying around on it and it ran fine. CRV's are interference engines. Sometimes you get lucky sometimes you don't. It was worth a try.

The 2.0 in these is notorious for belts breaking. My friend bought one thinking he could get a cheap motor. Well that was a year ago. He is still looking lol

U may have a 40% chance of no damage at all. If belt broke at lower engine RPM to where cam stopped spinning immediately.

Salute Randy 😎 I recently come across a Vw bug, definitely a later model 2016 -17. I'm going to take a shot on a fix, because the bug is going out of production. It's a timing problem with that one also 👍🙌👊

Don't know what they're calling them nowadays, but that rod with a socket holder in the middle use to be called a "tommy bar". Simply another way of turning a socket.

Also looks like the crank sensor is out . The tach is not moving at all !!! Check for spark and do a compression check before you give up on it!

randy these cars have a crank and a cam sensor if the 2 disagree it wont fire if your off just a smidge with the cam timing no go.

I expected this to be like a T.V. show. Against all odds the little Passat starts and runs perfectly. It is too bad such a small issue can total the car.

Dump some oil down the cylinders through the spark plug holes, just a cap full, gives it temporary compression, might start it but be aware it's gonna smoke....bad. Also that tool in your box is another breaker bar but more for lug nut removal.
