If air pressure fails the brake Chambers expand and parks the vehicle. That's why when you push in the parking brakes you are adding air to the system to retract the parking brake in the brake chamber

Randy had many questions that of course if he had a CDL he would know lol. He should do a series where he drives school bus. I believe it is air assist. Also because the door was open the amber didn't work.

The air pressure actually holds the brake pads from compressing against the rotors so if the air line fails the brakes will be permanently activated until it's fixed I learned this from my bus driver because I was actually curious

Randy, max air pressure is 120 psi. It'll occasionally build up past 120 psi then you'll hear the air dryer pop off. Which is the excess air. The doors on the bus work off of air cylinders. When it comes to the engine regen, the engine has to be at a certain temperature. With the switches on the side, noise suppression cuts power to everything inside the bus. Like the radio or your PA speaker which you called a CB radio. You talk into the microphone & it let's you speak through the speakers on the inside of the bus ONLY if the noise suppression switch is not activated. The amber lights work ONLY when the door is shut. Then when you open the door the red lights automatically come on. The strobe light switch is for the white strobe light on top behind the rear emergency exit on the roof. It's used for inclement weather such as rain, fog, etc to help identify it as a School Bus. The "emergency brake" is actually the parking brake. Once you pull the button, it ain't going anywhere.
@rodell4729
@rodell4729 Год назад
Randy.. you do not need a CDL endorsement to privately own a school bus or semi truck. If you plan on using it for business purposes, then you will need to obtain your CDL. Class A for semi trucks and Class B for something like a school bus or box truck with air brakes. People with a regular driver's license purchase school busses and convert them into RV's. It might be a good idea for a video for you to schedule an interview with the DMV or pull into a weigh station and speak with the state patrol about CDL endorsements.
@TellurideS13
@TellurideS13 Год назад
You can't drive a school bus or a semi without a CDL. Even if you own it privately. The only way you allowed to drive a school bus without a CDL if you convert it into an RV.
@rodell4729
@rodell4729 Год назад
@Telluride That is not true. Signs must be clearly displayed on a semi, school bus, or other vehicle like this that clearly states that this vehicle is not for hire but you do not need a CDL. I have a CDL and have had for 10 years. Laws vary by state, but I haven't heard of any yet that require a CDL to privately own one. There is a huge community of people that own semi's and the mini semi's and tow huge 5th wheels and they do not have a CDL. The deeler won't let you drive one without a CDL for insurance purposes but you can walk into tractor dealer and buy a semi and then drive it off the lot as long as you state that you are not for hire. The purpose of the CDL is because you intend on engaging in interstate commerce. You know how many vehicles on a farm would require a CDL if the 26,001lb law applied to them? All farmers would have a CDL. I think you should do a little more research, sir.
@MrWolfSnack
@MrWolfSnack Год назад
@@rodell4729 Robert is correct. CDL law only applies to someone as per business or operating an interstate transport corporation. It doesn't apply to Joe Handyman who buys a scrapped school bus. Also I believe churches that have actual retired school buses do not have CDL's either and the sisters or church volunteer will drive them just fine. Also like you said many people have antique semi trucks and drive them around, and they rig them up somehow on farm equipment plates or on truck plates, or whatever have you. I think you can get them tagged on historical vehicle plates in some states. You just have to have some way to prove if the DOT pulls you over that you are not engaging in commerce and have no business. Your grandma can drive an RV 10 times bigger than that school bus and do it on her expired car driver license, so the CDL laws do not apply to civilians.

Freightliner/international Master technician chiming in here. That's a freightliner m2 chassis. The brakes have a very heavy duty spring in the brake chamber that pushes the shoes against the drums via a slack adjuster and S-Cam. When you release the brake it fills a diaphragm with air that releases the spring. It will not roll away when the air drops unless the springs are broken. Also the system should hold 125psi. The P and S on the air gauges mean Primary and Secondary. It has 2 tanks. Both separate from eachother incase of a failure. The air tanks won't begin to fill again until it goes below 100psi. As for the CDL, you would need to remove the seats to drive it. You need a Passenger endorsed cdl to drive it with that many seats. If you have any questions I would love to answer! Stay safe randy!

Air brakes work the reverse of hydraulic brakes. Air brakes are engaged by springs, and the air pressure is what disengages the brakes, so if there is a sudden drop in air pressure, the brakes will engage. You lose hydraulic fluid, no stoppy. You lose air pressure, no goey. To simulate sudden loss of air pressure in our training, we had to get up to 35 mph and pull the parking brake. Surprisingly, the bus comes to a smooth, quick stop with no drama.

Hey Randy, I'm a School Bus driver. And the top air gauge is the primary and the second glair gauge is the secondary. And no the bus won't roll. At 60 psi or more the low air warning will come on which is an audio and light on the dash. Now on some buses 40 psi and lower the spring brakes will activate... now that air leak by the door is more likely the seal the the emergency release on the door. Which was somewhere on top of the door...any questions you may have on the bus just ask me. I've been driving school buses for over 25 years. And I've been a fan of yours for about 6 months now. And yes you have to have a CDL to drive that bus.

You can buy that bus. You don't have to register it for 31000gvw. At least in Minnesota you could register it for 26000 and your good. The vehicle doesn't weigh more than 18,000. It's all about the paperwork and total actual weight if you go across a scale. There are lots of box trucks running around that can handle a total weight of 31,000 but their registered for 26 so that you don't need a CDL to drive it. At that point you just got to make damn sure that you never over 26,000 like your dot paperwork says.

There will be a bypass lever for the door to close under air pressure. It’s released when bus is parked so door can be opened without air pressure. Once you find the lever for door it should open and close when air pressure is available. It should not be leaking though, but should be an easy fix when found.

On a bus like that the restrictions change. You can either register it for personal or recreational use and it won’t require a CDL, if it’s being used for commercial use as long as you aren’t transporting more that 15 passengers. Yes the air system operates the brakes and there is no parking gear, but the air pressure is used to release the brakes, not hold them on. Each wheel has a spring loaded brake chamber, when you press the yellow brake handle it supplies air pressure to one side of a rubber diaphragm that compresses that spring which pushes against a connecting rod attached to the S Cam that pulls the brake shoes in and away from the brake drum.

When you set the parking brakes in any air brake vehicle, you activate the spring brakes which keep it in place and prevent it from rolling away. On the regeneration, you need to keep the regeneration button pressed in until it starts to idle on its own on a higher idle. Idle you'll know when it's doing it. Keep it pressed in! Enjoy yourself. Have a great day!

So as a school bus driver I can clear some things up. 1 you would need a CDL to Drive that Vehicle, one reason would be because of the weight, the other reason is because the equipped capacity (designed to carry more than 15 passengers plus driver) requires a passenger/school bus endorsement. 2 the radio by that dashboard is not a CB radio that is a interior/exterior radio for the driver to communicate with the passengers, this why there were speakers along the side of the bus on the interior. 3 The amber warning lights would only work with the door closed, the arm on the front bumper is to make the students cross where the driver can see them if they need to cross the street. 4 There are more things than just brakes handled by air pressure, the front door is controlled by it as well, that would explain why the air pressure went down when you messed with the door controls. 5 to ease your concerns regarding the brakes when the bus's air pressure drops down to between 30 to 35 psi the spring brakes/parking brake engages which will keep the vehicle from moving, the way to test the brakes is building up to governor cutt off (150 psi) turn engine off, let gauges cycle (come back to 0), switch to the run position, release parking brake hold brake pedal down, when gauges settle time out 1 minute you should lose no more than 2 psi, then you would pump the brakes down, at between 70-60 psi you should get a warning buzzer and dashboard light to come on, then keep pumping at 40-30 psi you should get the parking to pop out/apply, then you'd start the engine up to build the pressure back up. If you're parking the bus and leaving it then you should set the parking brakes. Also just a side note that bus has a weird door control lay out lol
@hotmessfommy
@hotmessfommy Год назад
Air brakes actually have two types of brakes. Foot brakes and Parking brakes. Before starting a journey, one push in a yellow tractor Air Brake valve and a Red Trailer AB Valve on the dashboard. That pressurized the entire system to release the Parking Brakes and allow the vehicle to move. During movement, pushing the foot break activates a second portion of the system and applies the same break pads. In essence, they preform in the same way your car brakes do. If the air hose to the trailer spring a leak or breaks, air pressure is lost thus applying the parking/emergency breaks and the wheels won’t turn until repaired. If you’re driving along on an interstate and you see four skid marks appear at the same time and then vier off to the shoulder, some poor unlucky driver just lost air pressure in the trailer breaks

That e 250 van would make a great work truck. We have a few F 350s and we have to use two of those GB 150 jump packs to jump start when the battery’s are dead. As far as the bus the air system will leak air as it sets. It usually will drop to around 100 pounds and then the compressor will kick on and bring the pressure back up.any air leaks it has is a easy fix. Don’t worry it will not roll if it hits 60 pounds of air the brakes will set lock up it won’t roll. When you pull the brake valve the brakes lock anyways. It will not roll unless the brakes are way out of adjustment. It has air brakes so you need a cdl endorsement

Air Brakes on ALL Commerical Vehicles, are called Spring Brakes, Spring Brakes work in reverse to what you are saying in the video. If all of the air pressure is lost in the system, the brakes are actually stuck on until the air pressure is built up again. The reason for this is, that air is used to release the brakes, and the very powerful spring is used to apply the brakes. There are redundancies built into air brake systems for this very reason, especially on a school bus with kids as their only cargo, braking systems need to be built to take on any issues that come up. I hope this eased any concerns for future Commercial Vehicles you come across!

Without air pressure, the brakes stay on. Also, to do a re-gen with the switch, you have to hold the switch for 4-10 seconds, depends on the engine, model atc. My truck it's 8 seconds I believe. As far as the 26,000 lbs, I do believe that is only if you use it commercially because I know those old folks in those huge motorhomes that are the size of a Greyhound bus don't have a CDL to drive them. People buy school buses and make them into campers and don't need a CDL to drive them.

I know that you don't know much about this school bus, but it is a Thomas Saf-T-Liner C2, and yes, Freightliner made the chassis and Thomas made the body. The engine is powered by a Mercedes-Benz MBE 926 diesel. This bus was operated for the Allegany County School System in Maryland (this bus is not affiliated with ACPS it is a private contractor hired by the school system). And probably not all of the Saf-T-Liner C2s have the same spec due to the state. And also if you want the amber lights on you have to turn on the master switch and then turn on the ambers but you need to make sure that you have the door fully closed. And when you thought that the marker light switch would turn on the school bus sign it actually doesn't. You need to have a bus that has a switch called DEST SIGN (destination sign). That would be for the school bus sign. But since this doesn't have one, there would be no way to turn on or light up the school bus sign. By the way, the maker lights are clearance lights around the bus. I know this was a really long comment, but I just wanted to give you a tip about this C2.

He is for primary the Gage right below is asked for secondary because you have two air tanks and yes they drop and they rise and they drop and they rise that's normal.

The whole purpose of air brakes is the Air RELEASES the brakes. If it loses it's air, then brakes lock up so it can't roll. This is why they are safer and used in commercial trucks. Where as if you lose brake fluid, you lose your brakes. With air brakes, if you spring air leaks, then your brakes lock up. In short, air brakes are fail safe. When they fail, they stop you. Juice brakes. Brake fluid brakes fail, you crash. Most of those leaks are very minor and no big issue. It's common if you spin that Park brake button, you'd tighten up one leak. The air seat might have had a leak that you were hearing. Air horn hose might have had a leak, air door mechanism might have had a leak. So long as the engine running keeps the pressure at a safe level to keep the brake open, then you can roll and drive it.

I have cdl and when you pull the parking brakes switch it lets the air out to set the parking brake.

36:10 it would auto apply the air brake until safe, so it would be fine. As a major bus fan and expert I get asked this all the time.

The air brake system uses the air pressure to release the brakes, if you loose all air, the brakes will be locked and the bus will not move

I love the old ford vans. I am a Ford fan boy though. In the state of Iowa if you buy a School bus for personal use only not commercial use you do not need a CDL unless you intend to use the bus for commercial purposes.

The bus door probably doesn't close because the bypass valve is open. There should be a lever near the top of the door that has normal and emergency positions. Emergency allows the door to be opened and closed by hand. Normal allows the switch to control them.

Looks like your major question was answered. In air brake systems, the brakes are spring applied and pneumatically released. Put simply, it takes air pressure to release the brakes by overcoming spring pressure. If you have an air leak, the brakes don’t just lock up while driving down the road. That would be dangerous. Instead, what the driver will experience is brake drag. Then difficulty getting the brakes to release until the pressure drops so low that the brakes will be fully engaged. That is all. Unless the brakes are caged then, your initial concerns would be spot on. G&B Automotive!!! Waynesville MO

You have to throw the switch above the door to allow the doors to operate properly on a bus

Randy to shut the air door there is a red switch that is a air release. Door is most likely in emergency mode for when the driver gets off the bus flip it to normal and have the door switch on the dash in the closed position and the air door will close and work via the door switch on the dash. Also get the stereo working the speakers on the c2 are not half bad. My bus driver would crank the tunes loud when I was in school. He was a great bus driver. We'd rock out on the way to school.
