Hi Bill, That was fun to watch. And it got very funny after you said: I don't have the right tool Can't see too well but I am sure I noticed a bit of a pinkish coating on the inner surfaces? Especially the crankshaft journals? That's what you see if the system has been running acidic, for whatever reason. That's copper been dissolved from the tubing in the system and plated onto the steel surfaces. That usually invalidates the warranty on a compressor, if that is found. It means anything from moisture to high discharge temperatures. I like the diagnosis of a nice slug of liquid having been ingested, one will never know at which part of the cycle it happened, if the oil was hot or cold and so on. To get the stator winding's out they pull hard on them and heat the casing with some big propane gas flames, the casing expands and the stator pops out. The oil pump is trochoidal, and if you look at them you can see the outer ring can rotate. That automatically lines up the suction and discharge ports of the oil pump with the galleries in the compressor so that it pumps the right way regardless of motor direction. It is recommended to not change the motor direction on a compressor that has been in service though, as the ring does over time bed itself into position and may fail to rotate if the compressor is spun the other way. That would lead to no oil pressure. Yea, I could carry on all day about this lol. I love any kind of rotating machinery. Thanks for the great video, appreciate you sharing it. Kind regards from South Africa. Duncan

I found this to be rather humorous..! Back in the day ( 30 ) years ago industrial transportation freezer Copelands used these things called unloaders to control capacity in conjunction with temperature control and if one of them had a problem the compressor would only cool to a certain temp and stop cooling. I had a new guy with me and told him to check it out and see what he could find, I already knew it was one of the unloader solenoids. I came running back when I could hear the compressor slugging from the next room over. To late, he was dumping liquid right in the suction valve and screaming it was a low charge...! Welp when I took it apart it looked like yours except the valves were shattered also..! Needless to say the new guy didnt work out....
@curioushvacguy6876
@curioushvacguy6876 3 года назад
lol, Oh my - Just curious, how would a failed unloader cause it to cool to a certain temp and stop cooling? I would think without unloading the compressor would be oversized for whatever application it was in- fell free to email me curioushvacguy@gmail.com
@RT10Viperman
@RT10Viperman 3 года назад
@@curioushvacguy6876 Ok In the book they call them capacity reduction valves. They are no longer used in modern refrigeration. They use frequency inverters to reduce the RPM the compressor turns thereby reducing capacity but you know that..! Its was a set of three solenoids mounted on the head that reduce the compressors ability to compress hot gas, not much but enough to reduce capacity. The 3 were 25% 50% and a 75% and they fail closed so if one failed it would bring temp down but stop short of set point below -18c The noob dumped liquid right in the suction side and the rest is history..!!
@gregoryclemen1870
@gregoryclemen1870 2 года назад
they used unloaders for "LOAD MATCHING", the problem was if the person working on the system did not know what they were doing could( and would ) get into trouble real fast!!!!

@@Ivansgarage , if I run into a compressor that is a "BURN OUT" or "SPOT BURNED" that compressor is parted out of good parts, and the casting is sent back as a core with all mechanical parts removed and closed back up. . copeland does not sell pistons, rings, rods, crankshafts, rotors, bushings, and I take those parts and reuse them in another compressor. copeland did years ago, sell all internal parts, however they stopped doing that because they were not getting the castings back for rebuild. the stator/ motor is "PRESSED IN" and I do not have the tools/ equipment to remove the stator. I did work in a motor shop , rewinding motors years ago. I also would repair fan motors on the spot too, all of my work that I did was warrantied the same as if it was new( 1 year) the nice thing about that was ,I did not have to pay the parts house money, I get to keep all the money from the job, it makes a big difference, being that I do not have to chase down the parts, and leave the job site!!! its called "WORKING SMART"!!!! not hard. I got into this business back in 1978, and now I am retired!!! thanks for responding back, and have a great day!!!!. I have been told that copeland will stop rebuilding their semi- hermetic compressors 10 years from now, the demand for them has really fallen off, the "SCROLL" compressors has for the most part, replaced the semi's.!!!!

throttle bottle oh yes, I know perfectly well after having been a mechanic for forever. However, I really didn’t see the need to call it “a positive displacement gerotor pump” that has a high and low pressure cavity design for self-priming Im such an informal setting. They were much easier to deal with then the slipper (vane) type variable pumps too.

I rebuilt many semi- hermetic compressors, the motor winding leads that connect to the terminal block, they do not have to be put back on in any specific order. all it will do is make the compressor run in reverse rotation. the oil pump is designed to pump in either direction!!!. also the screen that you talked about, is the oil pick up screen. you did not remove the cap that holds the screen in place. there is a spring and a magnet behind the plate. this compressor failed due to poor oil return. the crankshaft bushings are worn , if you look at the rotor you will see where it was rubbing on the stator slots( bluing is gone). the rod broke first, then the piston ( from suction pressure) forced the piston down and hit the crankshaft. all of this could have been avoided by installing a" OIL PRESSURE SAFETY SWITCH" and a "OIL SEPARATOR"!!!! 97% of compressor failures are due to an "EXTERNAL REASON"!!!! this type of compressor is hard to "SLUG" with returning oil or refrigerant, being that it is refrigerant cooled anyway!!!

@gregoryclemen1870

that compressor is not designed to be used as a "AIR COMPRESSOR" you are going to have oil discharge issues, they do not have oil rings on the pistons, also the oil will turn acidic from the air/ moisture, and will cause motor failure. the oil insulates the windings of the motor( not dipped and baked)
