Copenhagen, Denmark and Amsterdam, the Netherlands, are two European capitals with a lot of shared features and maritime history, but also quite distinctive identities. How do these two fairytale cities stack up in terms of the physical experience of each place (the sights, sounds, tastes, feels, smells, and general ambiance?)
Today, I'm comparing the 5 senses and more of Copenhagen and Amsterdam.
To deep dive into each city's experience, check out my travel vlogs!

As a Dane from western Denmark, I have honestly been to Copenhagen and Amsterdam about an equal amount of times in my life, and I feel equally at home in either I would say. I remember as a kid the first time I came to Amsterdam, I thought that this felt exactly like home, even the Dutch language sounded like Danish being spoken just beyond your range of hearing, slightly garbled but with the same basic sound structure. That feeling has only been reinforced over the years as I have been back there. I think the primary stand out difference to me is that Amsterdam, alongside the entire Netherlands, feel more compact and crowded, which makes sense given that the Netherlands and Denmark are about equal in size, but the Netherlands have 3 times the population. The primary sense difference to me is the all encompassing sound of bike bells ringing in Amsterdam. As a Dane this gets stressful as we don't ring our bells unless there is danger or when we need someone to urgently make room for us, the Dutch habit of ringing constantly to make everyone around them aware feels like constant alarm bells going off to my Danish ears. Otherwise I honestly feel the similarities between Amsterdam and Copenhagen are greater than the differences, and outside the smell of cannabis and the ring of bicycle bells, you could easily confuse one for the other if suddenly and randomly placed in either city.

What a nice and fresh way of travel blogging. Great job. Im an Amsterdammer living in NYC. I really really like Copenhagen. My take is CPN has many examples of urban design (not necessarily plan) scattered around the city along with some very untouched natural areas whereas Amsterdam is better manicured and it has a better urban plan and infrastructure. CPN has a significantly classier but less inclusive folks while Amsterdam has friendlier more inclusive folks. Also much much more diverse and fun. The food in CPN is expensive but way higher quality. I was most suprised how well the quisine was.

I also really like Copenhagen, but I can definitely see what you mean about the cultural differences. I live in DC and we've got the "classy but not as inclusive" thing going on, whereas Philly for example is rougher around the edges but the people are far more inclusive. I personally would choose less classy but more inclusive every time!

The red sausages 'røde pølser' are mostly popular among kids and often served at kids' parties. Danish adults will usually go for a regular sausaged, fried sausage 'ristet pølse'

it’s cute how you said “Indre By” like it’s a name. that’s just Danish for “inner city” ☺️

There is a 25% Vat sales tax on everything in Denmark, so everything will be more expensive than elsewhere, but this is kind of how Denmark are able to tax foreigners visiting. It should be said though that the food is usually top quality and often eco organic, and the food itself is often not that expensive itself but whatever drink you order on the side is, so good advise is to buy whatever you want to drink cheaply in a supermarket to lower the cost dramatically.

Yes, the amount of canals, combined with the high storage houses, makes Amsterdam feel narrow.

Actually quite a lot of Copenhagen is built in what is called the Dutch Renaissance style. Over 90% of Amsterdam's old town is post medieval, the early modern period. Amsterdam as the booming city of the Dutch Republic, put the 'modern' into early modern period, it was the rise of the citizen, the individual, pioneering modern capitalism, so the people build the houses and warehouses like they wanted, as individualistic citizens but without showing off wealth because that was 'not done'. Otoh, this was also at the beginning of the enlightenment and rationalism, and a post nobility administration. Amsterdam is a planned city, planned for trade, with limited facade widtth for maximum canal access, and lots of green, backyards were mandatory. The 'Royal Palace' was build as City Hall, a people's palace as showpiece of the Dutch Republic. It was made a royal palace by Louis Napoleon, as a puppet king of his mighty brother, a role which he refused to play because he like the Dutch too much and got sacked.

I'm Swedish but have lived and worked in Copenhagen for some years when I was in my early to mid 20's. While Copenhagen was pretty decent, I always thought it was overrated from a tourism point of view. I remember just minding my own while living there and seriously wondering why the city is so popular among tourists. Where I have lived in Copenhagen? Initially close to Amagerbro so literally walking distance from Christianshavn and the city center, I then lived in Tårnby and could see the airport from home, and before moving back to my hometown in Sweden, I also lived in Brøndby for a while as it was closer to my job. The smell I remember from Copenhagen? Cigarette smoke, beer and old piss!

No chance that Copenhagen is less green, it's water is also vastly more clean, so much that it has public canal swimming spots in the central city.

The buildings in the center of Amsterdam are generally more than one century older than in the center of Copenhagen. I think most Danes are proud of their capital city. In The Netherlands this is not the case🤭
