I mean as a Copenhagener you're quite right, despite Copenhagen being a front runner in urbanism back in the day, we're nowadays a black sheep that's taking 1 step forward and 2 steps backwards. I can also already warn you there are no plans for downtown BRT systems (heck Bus lanes have actually been removed in a few places, and bus service was massively cut back after the opening of the M3 line), and trams are an even bigger can of worms. There are plans and funding allocated for an 8km long light rail line starting from Nørrebro in the Northwest, continuing further northwest into the suburbs via Husum to Gladsaxe trafikplads, actually following the city's last old tram line for much of it, but the opposition to it is strong with people claiming it'll kill the businesses and both people and politicians even comparing tram tracks to the Berlin Wall It doesn't help that the city of Copenhagen has actively removed trees in a massive amount of spaces over the last 10 years. Their new "redesigned" parks tend to be worse than the parks that were before it, and one park near the central hospital is looking like its gonna be completely gone as they plan on widening an arterial road there (yes they are seriously planning to do that and I hate it.) I mean heck at the same hospital they recently demolished affordable housing for nurses and doctors on the hospital grounds to make way for a parking garage, if that doesn't tell you the priorities of this city IDK what does. Also the Copenhagen metro actually does have underground parking garages but they are so poorly designed that nobody uses them, and the bikes in there more often are not are stolen bikes that thieves just store them in since nobody else goes in there. And like, I want this city to become better, but the current people in charge are more willing to blow 27 billion DKK on an underground highway through the harbour than on developing something more useful. Like with that money you could convert most of the A-bus lines to high capacity tramways! It doesn't help that the city has no congestion charge, with proposals over the years being turned down again and again and again. It doesn't help one of the biggest subjects of the municipal election 2 months ago was the matter of parking spaces. Copenhagen has roughly 125.000 municipal parking spaces, and an additional 80.000 privately owned ones, and the streets are completely overcrowded with cars to the point where essential services like carpenters, plumbers, garbage trucks, and ambulances can't find anywhere to be with the private entrepeneurs especially often declining customers in those areas or simply accounting for the parking fines into their budget.
@Foobarski
@Foobarski Год назад
One big thing they could do, was to charge fair market rates for those 125.000 municipal parking spaces. Currently local residents can get access to them at penny on the dollar of their actual market rate. The ekstra city income could then be spend on infrastructure like bicycle paths or underground parking. Unfortunately, mentioning this idea to car owning Copenhageners and they will get angry.
@drdewott9154
@drdewott9154 Год назад
@@Foobarski Yeah, Copenhageners are not exactly a fan of such ideas, even if its one of the only shots we have left. Heck even more recent talks of roadpricing puts the suggested prices at VERY LOW levels, and weird and stupid solutions like it all going through a phone app. At least we're finally seeing some good changes like speed limit reductions throughout the city and a bit more funding towards bicycle infrastructure. But again compared to some of the car related projects going on its pennies!

As an old man, I know from experience that Trams using the roads, among the other traffic, are a Pest, even now being, for some reason, named "Light Rails"? If in a separate system, they may be fine, though we often hear of severe accidents from the few new places now using them in Denmark. I somewhat look forward to see how they will be functioning in the new, Ring System Trams, not far from where I live, near Copenhagen, as most rails are at least now away from the roads, and only crossing those, when a major road crosses the tracks.

Yes I'm not Danish but Dutch so probably biased. But when I was in Copenhagen in 2018, I was actually quite surprised and a bit disappointed... It didn't feel bike friendly at all. It's much more a walking city and I wish Amsterdam had such a fantastic water taxi service. But cycling? Not really... There aren't that many protected bike lanes, parking seems indeed to be a problem (although Amsterdam is not ideal either and often a mess), but what shocked me the most: cars... A lot of them! Way more than in Amsterdam. Even if that might not be true (I don't know, have to check that), it felt like it. It felt like a very car friendly city. A plus to finish then ? The metro system is awesome. A lot better than in Amsterdam! Update: so I was right about the feeling. In Copenhagen the ratio bike car is about 1:1 (both about 250.000) In Amsterdam it's officially about 1:5 in the bike's favor (200.000 versus 1 million). I suppose that explains quite well the different feeling I had...

@torrawel 2 года назад
@@meibing4912 I agree. I just googled it because I couldn't find the numbers. Do you have official numbers by the local government? If you want I could give you the official numbers of the Amsterdam municipality. However, the feeling remains. I would feel unsafe in Copenhagen. Amsterdam is not great either compared to Dutch standards, but still cars are less dominant and it also looked as if there was less bike infrastructure in Copenhagen.
@Kvadraten376
@Kvadraten376 2 года назад
You probably spent a lot of time in the city center, which is not very bicycle friendly. But the network of protected bike lanes is very expansive and very well connected and cohesive. But you have to go outside the city center, where many people don’t live anyway, to see it. But it is true that Copenhagen is a weird combination of bikes and cars. Worth noting is the relationship between the city and its many low-density suburbs. When people cite numbers that point to CPH as the worlds bicycle capital, it only includes Copenhagen municipality and not the 15 urban municipalities around it. Many of the cars in the city come outside the central city.
@torrawel
@torrawel 2 года назад
@@Kvadraten376 "where many people don't live anyway"... That's a pity... The Amsterdam suburbs and the municipalities around it also, in general, have better infrastructure. The guy from @NotJustBikes made some cool videos about it. What do people in Copenhagen consider to be the city centre ? The pre-19th century town? Or is the 19th century included? Is it the area within the Søerne? Is Christiania counted? In Amsterdam, it is the 17th century town. Since I had to be at the university mainly, I didn't do all the tourist stuff. My hotel was somewhere behind the central train station, an area that, I guess, probably is not counted as city centre, right ?
@Kvadraten376
@Kvadraten376 2 года назад
@@torrawel For clarification: Not many people live in the city centre so I would distinguish between the “city centre” and “central Copenhagen” where the first is everything within the the former fortifications, including Christianshavn. This area is mostly commercial and can more or less be compared to everything inside the canal rings of AMS. “Central Copenhagen” or just “the city” is the dense part of the larger urban area. The density in Greater Copenhagen drops very sharply outside central Copenhagen and expands quite far out from there. I think area-wise that the Copenhagen urban area is larger than Amsterdams despite a lower population. The suburbs actually have great bike infrastructure (best rated in surveys) but not everyone uses it, because mobility patterns caused by the location of jobs and population are a bit more complex than in Amsterdam. In Amsterdam the urban and transit structure around Zuidas is absolutely genius and I wish we could’ve done the same. Taking the wider metropolitan area into account (2 mio. people) the area has experienced urban sprawl, and this explains why there are so many cars in central Copenhagen. Most of them are from outside the city. “Holiday cars” are also starting to become a problem. As incomes has risen sharply over the last years, many city families are buying cars that they only use a couple of times per month. This takes up valuable space.

Great video! Copenhagen is a lovely city. Been there 3 times, and the last time we biked around the city, all the way to Dragør (close to the international airport). Copenhagen definitely has a lot of good infrastructure, but it's also lacking a lot of things. Too many painted unprotected bike lanes next to busy roads, and they are not always marked very well. It's hard to find places to park bikes. Some lanes are too narrow, others are really wide. And what's up with those scary intersections? They really made me feel uncomfortable. There are also sooooo many cars, especially in the heart of the city. Crazy! I would say it's probably one of the better cities for bikers, but Dutch cities are definitely steps ahead for sure. I always thought Copenhagen was a green city with a lot of trees, until I watched this video.

There is the most beautifull bridge in the Netherlands close to where I live, nesciobridge Amsterdam. which has a serous flaw in an important detail: the slope varies wildly during the climb, so that you can't ride it in one gear, and the steepest parts are way steeper then necessary. It is a very nice bridge for running training though, and as preparation for cycling abroad, I have ridden circles with this bridge and another one with my saddle bags full of bricks. I have allso combined training with utility by transporting several metric tonnes of sea clay from the Diemerpark where they had dredged a ditch, to my garden which was way too sandy after renovation.

I actually cycled on the super wide lane because just down the bridge is a bike rental. But because it goes from a narrow lane into this insanely wide ‘cyling only’ lane we kind of panicked because we thought we took the wrong turn into the car lane section 😂. At the mall side of the bridge the super wide lane turns into a super narrow lane with a side lane towards the snake bridge. It’s all a bit confusing if you’re a “first user”.

It looks like Copenhagen gets serious competition from Paris. I agree with your observation that there are quite a lot of significant mistakes in the road design. My impression is that the focus is too much on "making space for bikes", where it can better be "share the streets optimally" with only as side effect good bike and pedestrian facilities. 'The Live-Sized City's comparison in ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0Ggh1Jx7--o.html is really out-dated. Facts like size of bicycle garages is soooo important.
@Kvadraten376
@Kvadraten376 2 года назад
The importance of bicycle garages is relative to the specific city I would say. In Copenhagen it’s very easy to get to regional rail without biking very far, so the there’s less need for giant garages like in Utrecht.

@Kvadraten376
@Kvadraten376 2 года назад
@@markovermeer1394 No, what I implied was that some stations have a larger “catchment area” of local commuters, and therefore need more capacity in bicycle garages. A city with many smaller stations require less. I never claimed that stations in Copenhagen have no facilities, because they do. But they are smaller and using underground parking is seen as a waste of time by many. You have to view it in context to understand why that is. Personally, I use the central station to catch regional trains on my commute, but I get there by biking to my local metro station and then I take the metro to the central station. The surface bicycle parking at that local metro station is sufficient. Some places the parking capacity is too low, like Nørreport station, and I’m definitely critical of that. My original point was that it’s still a matter of context. Although I mostly agree with them, sometimes Dutch urbanites have a tendency to say that anything that isn’t Dutch is, per definition, bad. We do things differently in Copenhagen, for better or worse, and I think a bit of open-mindedness from both sides is needed.

Been to North America several times. Don't think that you get to attack our Biking Culture. You basically have none, corresponding to Europe. The problem with cycling tourists in Copenhagen is that they don't want to spend five minutes learning the traffic code and rules.
