Trade is better than aid for Africa. They say. In a journey through copper thieves and mine barons in the north of Zambia, Bram Vermeulen investigates the truth behind that slogan.
From a distance they look like ants, the hundreds of men digging holes in the rubble slopes of an old copper mine in Zambia. They are looking for copper ore in the walls of the enormous pit, without wearing helmets and without reinforcing the walls of their caves. Life-threatening, of course. But they find enough to live on. Is it legal, Bram asks. They laugh about it. No of course not. But the Chinese buyer does not really ask where they get their ore from. You just have to leave when the guards of the mine come.
How different is it in a huge copper mine in full operation. Huge machines drive off and on. Sirens sound regularly, followed by explosions. Here, 300,000 tons of stone are moved every day, and the copper ore from it yields a profit of hundreds of millions of dollars a year. But it is a foreign company that raises that money. And if the productivity gets too low after about twenty years, the investors will move on.
From the air it is easy to see how far-reaching it all is. The mine takes big chores out of the country and turns huge plains into a kind of lunar landscape. But other changes are also visible. Houses, schools, a golf course. Prosperity, therefore, emphasizes a mine boss. Seven years ago this was still a dull provincial town, and now look!
A little further on the big changes are about to begin. There is a giant copper mine here, and for that an area of no less than four hundred square kilometers is expropriated. The new owners promise economic prosperity. Did not a city like Johannesburg also start out as a simple mine?
Naturally, people living in the area can not stay. They have worked the land for generations, but they can not show ownership documents. They have not been asked anything. They do get compensation for their houses, chickens and fruit trees, but not for the ground. "Everything under the ground is state property," says a representative of the mining company, "and that is what the state can rent out to us." Residents who do not want to leave are squatters who violate the law from that moment on. Even though they were born and lived there all their lives.
Those former residents are moved to neat new houses outside the area. With toilet, and bigger than the previous house, but without land to grow food. Some of them seem satisfied with that. Most do not. 'In Africa, land has sentimental value. You are no one without land, 'says one of them. "So you're destroying these people. They will not pass on anything to the next generation. "
Episode 6. Copper fever
For Africa, trade is better than aid, or so they say. On a journey to copper thieves and mine bosses, Bram Vermeulen investigates the truth behind the slogan.

There's no reason why Africa countries can't be like the Qatars and Dubai's of this world where the wealth has spread amongst the people, the governments there are selfish, disrespectful, short sited and greedy. Is it a wonder Africa is not developing at the rate it should be with these types of deals going on. Africa is not poor the leadership is sick.

What have we done in this world wrong to deserve this purnishment.

The problem is that we need resources as humans. How we go about getting them is the problem. Even in Europe finding resources beneath your feet can be a problem.

Same in UK - The government owns the minerals below your house/farm. Am not saying right/wrong. But the new houses - shit Jeez thats bad Could have been 10 x better and still cost the company next to nothing. Solar powered, workshop, etc etc. At least have given the families some shares in the mine

Myanmar-Wambao Copper mining project, a contract between Military owned Company and a Chinese Company, in Myanmar started in 2010. What local residents are experiencing is worse than that. The residents demonstrated hundreds times until they became recognised as Criminals, arrested and sent to jail. In 2014, a woman farmer was shot down to dead, during a police crack down. the ecosystem closely lied next to one of Myanmar's four biggest rivers, will be gone. Before two mountains in secondary school Geography text book had disappeared and the local residents already affected by the impact, polluted underground water; water from wells became bitter or sour and cannot drink anymore. The Company is operating without transparency to the media or to the local residents. Not sure how it can benefit the State after over 60 years when Military abused people as they are State :-(

The video did not mention the compensation given to the truck driver. Is it more then the person made as a farmer? Is there less, more, or equal access to education, medical facilities, food and upward mobility in the new town vs the old village? Or did the documentary just want to show us that mines are bad.

This is all going to change. Asteroid mining is the future. Need to stop mining on the earth and this will be possible. So many private companies are now involved in this new project and if it works there will be unlimited resources without the environmental damage.

Another town is dying in Africa, because of a finite mine. The chief gets a new TV, and a bigger hut; while his people lose their land. Meanwhile, somewhere in the village, Bob Marley's 'WAR', plays quietly on a radio... The end!

I like the documentary but this documentary is mainly talking about the displacement of communities due to the fact that the land they own is onto of minerals but if you look back before all these mines opened ,the local people never had anything and were suffering and so these mines not only bring employment for the local people and give them better lives to live but also economical stability for the country.zambias economical reform goes by 72% is most from the mines and the rest is from agriculture and other businesss and so all these mines bring forth better economical reforms for the country

@ 43:28 the reason why the corporation purchased the land is to move the lands and all those within that territory under a new law, the law of equity, based on law of domicile, not traditional laws, this is a massive problem that the common people are ignoring, and is making them subject to a new law, not the law of the land from their ancestors. once one accepts the new jurisdiction based on lands and no longer an owner but a purchaser, is the reason for the new rights of a legal subject.... please check out successors.ca
