COVID definitely made it worse through supply chain issues as we outsource labor in China and other countries that were much more serious about shutting down within weeks of the beginning of the pandemic. Supply went down while demand did not decrease, causing the price for every input to all goods to rise, and the price for any goods to rise. You can look at raw materials such as lumber, steel, and other basic materials during the COVID years and the inflation was insane because there was not enough help to keep up with all of the need. Money has not been "real" since the United States has been off the gold standard, or since we have not had gold/precious materials of the same value backing the amount of money that exists. You can look up that we have a huge vault full of gold to essentially back all of the paper money that has existed up until a certain point. Currently, money is not "real" and probably never will be.
