notice when the cop is checking her license, she says 'we're legal'. He responds, 'you are legal'. Here is what is actually going on. The cop sees the TV camera and knows they are making shine. The license is a license to produce alcohol, all the people on the show have it. Making the shine is not illegal. That's the thing people don't understand about this show.
I'm pretty sure the "I'm legal" comment was in regards to them fishing. But also yes none of this is "illegal". These aren't the real moonshiners, these are people in the legit liquor business with fancy camera work and suspenseful music.

The cop doesn't care. If he sees them doing nothing he would have to report it as suspicious activity. If he sees them "fishing", that gives him enough reason to just tell his superiors "they were just fishing". Cops don't like paperwork.

If you've watched the clip/episode where Digger and the other actor, Mark, attempt to recreate it they just mix rye and corn runs around 50/50 and call it a success. No special ingredients, filtering, double distilling, or anything.
Without the cliff hangers that turn out to be nothing and a recap every 4 minutes of what you just watched, an hour long show would be only 4:30 minutes long.
They need to be running a drone up and down that river for a mile each way when moving that barge to be sure there aren’t any eyes watching thru binoculars before they get busted!!
@jasheed albahari it’s fake but real, they’re all legal, and have licenses to legally make alcohol, so it’s real in that sense but fake they’re not running from the law, or any real consequences, but still entertaining
Moving was the stupidest thing they could have done. If the cop did suspect something, all he had to do was to sit somewhere and observe what they do. Taking off as soon as the husband's boat returned would have been a good sign that something was amiss and that they were moving for a reason - to avoid the law. All he needed to do was to tag behind them out-of-sight and see where they move to - then go obtain a warrant to do a search.

I enjoy this show. But I do not think Moonshining is as illegal as they lead us to believe. I mean, they made a Discovery Channel hit show that gives their secrets away. If it was that illegal, those moonshiners would not let them film. Still a fun show!

This isn't necessarily scripted. Maybe reenacted but the officer didnt necessarily have a reason to board the barge or even search the property with out a warrant. They had their licenses and are far as the officer knew they were legal within the authority that he currently had.
I love it. We need money for winter to survive. Mean while 50 thousands truck 3 4x4 atv. Big house farm 10 thousands dollar boat. It's not about survival its about greed.

If the game warden or officer came up and asked for a fishing or hunting license why would you be scared out of your shine spot if there was no indication or thought of shine just fish
LOL the real moonshining of the modern era is making hash oil. Discovery Channel aint got the nuts to come out west and document the hash makers doing ther thing. Like moonshine stills, BHO extraction equipment is often unique design to its owner.

I Been Making Moonshine in my Garage Since i moved to Connecticut from KY. Long as you stat low you will never get caught the problem is when i buy corn and sugar. Fast Way To Make $$$$$

Moving the barge was one of the stupidest moves they could have done. If Johnny Law did suspect something, all he had to do was circle around and wait for them to make a move. Pulling up anchor and relocating suddenly would be too suspicious. They should have stayed there and maintained a more frequent "fisherman" persona. The law will be checking on them off-and-on, and to see them suddenly gone raises questions.
Its television, of course its going to be scripted. Everything on television is scripted, especially on these types of shows. The producers are just trying to make the show more full of "close calls" to get people to watch.
