My husband is a motorway cop, yes as a wife I do worry about him. He also says that people drive past accidents too fast and that it can be frightening at times. I live in Germany and the speed limit is much higher and some motorways have no speed limits at all. At this moment its raining, foggy and on the edge of freezing and my husband has nightshift. I wish more people would use their brains and reduce their speed in bad weather and driving past accidents.

Drivers not slowing down at an accident scene drives me nuts!! I live in Alberta, Canada, and I used to be a volunteer fire fighter. We had the same problem. I think one of the many reasons, other than stupidity, is that when you are driving, it often feels like you are going really slow when you're not. People need to experience standing on a road and having cars drive past them. It's totally different, and I think a few more people might respect those having to stand outside after experiencing it themselves. Enjoying the show. 🇨🇦

Same here! How hard is it to just pay attention to the road and not someone's worst day? I'm also in Alberta, Canada and the people here are absolute idiots when it comes to things like that. I remember a couple years ago, a hay plant just off the highway went up in flames, which wasn't even the first time but so many people were rubber necking and even pulling over, that the RCMP started giving out tickets. I was driving home, talking to my son through Bluetooth, and I heard tires squealing, a car in the next lane was paying more attention to the fire than the road, and almost slammed into the car in front of them because traffic was crawling at that point. It's 100kms on that highway, and we were barely moving, so I'm amazed there wasn't an accident. It was absolutely pathetic! There were so many cars pulled over on the shoulders, and so many more being driven at a snails pace, just because of a fire. I'm glad the RCMP stepped in. What was even better, was that early the next morning, I saw smoke so I got in my car to go see where it was coming from because I didn't hear sirens, and I was worried that someone's house was on fire and they didn't know it. I found where it was coming from, which was a county truck in a locked compound, so I called 911. By the time they put the fire out, 4 trucks were destroyed, and I was asked to stay to give a statement. I parked a safe distance away, but it struck me at the irony. Hundreds of people were fascinated by a fire in a building, yet no one was there when trucks were on fire, with explosions going off. One truck with a couple people showed up but after being yelled at by a firefighter for repeatedly running over their hose to get a better viewpoint, they left. So other than the emergency crews, I was the only one who witnessed it, and it was much more interesting than burning hay.

In Canada there are hundreds of thousands of miles of what would be equivalent to British A and M roads with no lighting. It is normal. In Ontario there is one major dual carriageway that runs from the border with the Province of Quebec at Cornwall 500 miles to the border with the US in Windsor. At a minimum there are 2 traffic lanes each way. Through the city of Toronto that can stretch to 16 live lanes in 4 carriageways. Except at interchanges and through some of the cities, the road is completely without illumination. Not even the overhead signs are lit. We manage just fine.

I don't think such a marker as shown (just a sticker) should be legal in an articulated lorry. I have one in my cab (class 2, so rigid) and I can change the cards in it to change the displayed height. But in an Artic you actually should be able to change the displayed height and it should be within view of the driver. This due to some trailers being taller than others or loads on flatbeds being variable heights. Trailers usually have a height based on a set fifth wheel height printed on their headboard so the driver can check whilst coupling, but it's not hard to carry a tape measure to actually measure it once it's all coupled up. Hell, put one in the cab and leave it there so it's never forgotten.

@@Diamondmine212 I don't believe you can realistically be that dogmatic about a zero limit, many medicines and product like mouth wash contain small amounts of ethanol, different forms (beer, spirits, etc) of alcohol metabolize at different rates and individual metabolic rates vary widely. Not totally sure, it was several years ago, but I recall reading that alcohol can also be a byproduct of human metabolism and think this was associated with either a disease or some genetic conditions so it's possible some people will never quite blow zero. Whether 35 is the right number as a measure of impairment is a totally different question.
@raysutton2310
@raysutton2310 11 месяцев назад
@@johndilloway9762 You have to draw the line somewhere and to make roadside equipment of evidentiary quality would be too expensive. There is also the, admittedly small, possibility that they would blow higher at the station, they could be passing 35 on their way to 70 depending on what they drank, how much, when, and their individual metabolism. The road side unit could also be under-reading. In some ways a functional test (like the US field sobriety tests) would be a better measure in that it is neutral to the cause of impairment but the US model is far to subjective and open to abuse for my liking.

As far as UK has one of the best H&S laws, using hi viz jackets at work ,separate ways for flts and pedestrians etc, it has one of the worst drivers when it comes to hazards on the roads. Been living there for 15years and when there is accident on road/obstacle etc NO ONE is using HAZARD lights to warn others to slow down!!! When I was travelling from UK to Poland on many occasions I was witnessing accidents and the best drivers has to be Germans! They quickly put their hazards on to warn others to slow down, also the veer to the side of the road to make safety corridor for the emergency team to get to accident scene asap. It should be taught in car driving school in my opinion,so many people think, they are immortal in their cars!

Why would the A1 be diverted to a road with a relatively low bridge? If that bridge has been hit often enough like the network rail bloke says it has, they maybe need warnings ahead of the bridge. Other countries have height cameras ahead of low bridges to flash up a warning they’re over height well ahead of the bridge and have places to turn around. Since this one’s hit often - maybe they need to think about adding something to stop it happening.. Also, about closing lanes at night - here’s a better idea instead of cones: traffic flares.
