Qualified immunity. Their logic is no one would be a cop if people could just sue them personally into oblivion. And that they need an incentive to work as cops.

That's some legit incentive to not ruin peoples live for your own personal reasons. But sadly that means the actual Department needs to be accountable and we all know how that goes. Also the incentive to work as a cop is caring for your community, wanting to keep people safe and help people, and upholding the law while adhering to it yourself. A suit doesn't get to the cops personal pocket, but it should. As long as their union allows them to do anything and pay suits with tax payer money, this will continue. The union and the cop(s) needs to feel it. Only then will there be change.

If you think that will do anything to drop the percentage of brutality youre wrong. Qualified immunity is a newer implemented thing that came out in the 60s. Cops were even more corrupt before the 60s. That will do nothing to stop brutality. It is ancient knowledge thats been around since before pyramids were a thing. If you want special privileges in any society you need to either be the ones making policy or enforcing policy. That is and will always be the order of things.
