Copyright Issues for Dance Videos? | DanceVid 101 by RPProds 

All these copyright obstacles, yet all that dancers wanna do is spread the love for the music with dance :(

Just want to suggest something that is successful for me, i do dance covers for fun. This will work for facebook, and may work for youtube. Do some or all of the following: (1) Use a cover of a popular song, not the original. (2) Cut off the first and last 3 seconds, or heavily distort them. (3) Speed up the song to 103-105% speed. (4) Lower the Pitch slightly, just barely noticeable. (5) Pray

Ugh why can't they just let us use the music without copyright? 1. The music will get more listeners IF dancers can use the music without copyright 2. I'm sad that we can't use it :(

I’m a dancer myself. It’s a little sad to here this because I’m 35 now and I need to show the world that I can improvise to Radiohead and all kinds of music before I get too old. I think it’s important that I just film myself doing it and then figure out the rest, because even if I never get to post, my daughter and the world will always be able to see it and it will be documented forever.

Honestly, I think those copyright claims are just the worst. Especially in times where so many things are becoming digital and lots of talented people get the recognition they deserve online. I've experienced cases where performing artists got discovered on social media and got a role in a production that way. We're not living in a time anymore where people rush to auditions, especially because some of us don't have the courage to do so. And, being a dancer myself, it frustrates me to know that I can't upload my videos anywhere (except for Instagram reels) without risking a copyright strike. I'm a very introverted person, so I feel way more comfortable performing online (let it be an uploaded video or a livestream) than actually auditioning in person for a role in a show. Although I'd love getting on stage, I just can't deal with that whole audition setting. So, my only way of reaching that goal would be actually catching someone's attention through social media. And then those copyright claims get in the way.

I don't even care to monetize my videos, just to be able to show them without getting blocked or muted. RU-vid is much more relaxed in the copyrights, so far I got only 1 video muted, while on Facebook and Instagram is a constant battle, even the exact same video is blocked in FB and IG but in youtube is no problem.

The solution is to: 1. make your dance video 2. Remove all sound 3. List the song you will be dancing to 4. Do a countdown so the person watching your video can synch it with their copy of the song they are using to your dance. 5. Add audio explaining this b.s. and protest it with your opinions of how awful this money system is that humans can not dance in the most modern way ... online. Such garbage legislation with no 1 click way to obtain permission as part of the dcma. Money rules our corrupt rule makers unfortunately.

I'm a musician's daughter & I absolutely love music 🎶. It's a language understood across the 🌎 and is 1 thing that connects us all. When someone wants to upload a song to Facebook or Instagram, it's usually bcuz that artists song has a special meaning or moving that individual that day for a specific reason. I understand the importance of ©️ copyrights, my family endured that when my dad died, just which it wasn't always so sticky. 🎶 Music Moves The Soul 🎵

How do these guys get away with it, I see that a number of videos are categorised under "educational" when they aren't. They're just people dancing to music. Can you explain this? Is that a way of doing it, just label it educational and copyright goes away.

What if I used a choreographed video, removing the famous music and replacing with a piece I composed myself? Also giving credits to the Chorepgrapher and dancers in the credits, and pointing out which piece of music the dance was originally set to? Does this sound like something that would be OK? I have done just this with a dance I discovered on Danceon, and now I'm wondering if I've done wrong. Any advise on this would be great. Thanks.

Thanks for the advice, this makes me feel pretty bad though, feels like its impossible for you to upload dance videos online without obsticles. They should see it as free advertising. I have more luck on FB than RU-vid for getting a video taken down related to dance. Maybe adding some educational element to the video will help?

Hey!!! here from the future 😆 I have a question!!!! Not too long ago I posted a dance cover on my other youtube channel from a song by Usher, and before posting it it said the video was going to be "demonetized" and that a non-stop list of countries wasn't going to be able to hear the video (or view it I forgot) but is there a way that I could possibly make a dance cover to a song without it being copyrighted? I see so many RU-vidrs casually posting dance covers with so many popular songs these days, for example many kpop covers and from the original artists 👀 or i know now there's the youtube shorts, doing a dance cover there by the orginal artist won't get you copyrighted will it? 👀

I literally uploaded videos of a talent show from when I was in High School with Disney music that was played in person on a piano and it got blocked after 2 years. Oh a high school talent show and the music wasn't pre-recorded.....

A DJ friend told me the problem is from the owner of FB and IG, bcz they do not want to pay for the author of the music each time a user upload their songs, so to avoid being fine over "copyrights" they just block or mute everyone.I think dancers have the most troubles because we ( generally) do not produce our own music.

You can use popular 'mainstream' music in your dance videos.. it's covered under fair use for demonstration of technique

I created my own youtube channel to post some dance moves with some popular songs but however 2 of my videos have been striked through and also several of my videos have copyright claims although it is purely my own creation.They even mailed me to close my RU-vid channel.Don't know what to do..feeling upset.

Hi! Not sure if you're still reading comments underneath this video. I have a second RU-vid channel where I share Latin dance videos, since I'm often a videographer at Latin dance events. I don't do this for the monetization (the monetization goes to the artists) - it's mostly just to share the performances with the people who attend the events. However, I have a "copyright troll" giving me strikes. Basically this troll has created a brand new YT account, uploaded 2 songs to it (the songs used in my videos), then claimed to be the owner of the songs and striked my dance videos. I can't exactly file a counter notice because I don't own the songs - but neither does the troll! This seems so messed up. Anyone can just create a fake YT account, strike down 3 videos and terminate a channel. Do you have any advice here? Has this ever happened to you?

Honestly i am sick of the copyright. I support musicans getting paid for their songs... but why can't I just post a video of my local showcase? Im not stealing anything... I just want the dancers to see their own routines. It's just a small time dance group and we are just doing it for fun. No one is making money. I hate this because you can't just dance for fun. They assume you are a criminal.
