Thank you Dave for so educate review. I don't know this feathers goes to you. I'm Javier Escanciano, from the label at the right packages and Tomas Gil was the breeder of the center package. As I purchased all the Roosters and Hens to Tomas Gil two years ago before his retirement, I proudly could say 2/3 of the feathers on the table came from my farm. I started a very complex project to avoid the extinction of this rare birds and the artisan ancient breeding. My wife and me are working hard 24h/365d to give you, the fly tyers, this miracle of the Nature. Soon we start to publish in English all the knowledge of the old manuscripts of Leon, and you could see all the color and speckle variants of Pardo de Leon and Indio de Leon not yet seen outside Leon, Spain. And all the fly patterns from nymphs, wet, dries, terrestrials used in our trout rivers. This is the sort of thing that makes me happy to have gotten interested in fly tying. I don't know a whole lot about these, I bought a pack of it and have not really used any of it because the fibers are so small and fine to where half of the flies I tie would use up a lot of it. I have only used it for smaller perdigons and other smaller low profile euro-type patterns
You'll be interested to know that these feathers have moved back to their original place of Boñar in the Curueño Valley of Leon Spain. Not a big move, only 8.6km but it has not been without some controversy, as some people, including myself, believe that birds raised outside this historic range, lack the brilliance and overall desirable qualities of this breed. It is believed that it has alot to do with the soil and its qualities. In any case, and so far as anyone can tell, the feathers being produced out of Boñar are of great quality. It is worth mentioning that this move has signalled a passing of the torch of these ancient birds.
Hello Davie! I have found that the best feathers of coq de leon are the ones that came from Leon Province in Spain, not others... Much expensive as the brands that you showed in your video, but this are really really good. All the best.
Thanks for the post. As far as I know, the Spanish pluck feathers from their chickens and don't kill them. I'm pretty sure Whiting chickens don't get to live when their feathers are harvested.

I have all three in my possession as well and find CDL to be extremely useful and very versatile, a lot of the additional uses outside of tailing is thanks to you and all of the videos that you have put out for us lucky tiers. Sure do love the color in that Whiting Firey Ginger saddle you have on your bench, and fell in love with it the first time I saw you using it in one of your Caddis winging videos. Yeah, they are beautiful, so useful I purchased a whiting dark pardo saddle last year but haven't got round to using as I've still got some hareline feathers to use up first. Had a play at using CDL for posts & wings after seeing you use the feathers this way on some of your Tutorials. Thanks for post & all the others that incorporate this amazing material.
I love this feather and the way they collect them in Spain. It don't mind killing and eating things, but would I save a chickens life to save it? Of course I would. That is my problem, to kill or not to kill, is that a question? I keep it in my mind because I do it. Keeps me honest about my hobby. I adore chickens! They are good company and I love their personalities. so the chickens really need no introduction. I sleep slightly better at night.
Davie, could you please do a video of CDL fly patterns that explore options beyond tailing? I think they're beautiful feathers but can't find a good-functional use for CDL besides tailing. Thank you!

Davie I have a feather question..what colour do you recommend rooster hackle for the regular tups indispensable tying..Im thing golden straw or maybe light ginger ?. Great video, Davie! Thanks. I followed the link to the original Coq De Leon and found a picture of a "Traditional Spanish 'Ahogada' wet fly. It says "Instead of winding a hackle, a bunch of fibres are tied in front of the thorax, which splays them out in a wet fly manner." It's a graceful looking fly. Would you tie one for us?

D'après un éleveur de coq limousin rencontré sur un salon français, les coq du Léon sont très proches génétiquement des coq limousin. Cela viendrait des pèlerinage de ST Jacques de Compostelle. Coté espagnol, ils ont sélectionnés les coq pour avoir cette brillance de plume alors que coté français, ils ont été sélectionné pour avoir des plumes permettant de faire des très belle collerette (finesse et qualité de la plume).
