Thanks for testing it anyway. I was around when CorBon was the most respected of the manufacturers. But as you said, that was a long time ago and no one can tell us how old this ammunition is or how it was stored. And technology has advanced considerably since them.

I have a bunch of over 20 year old ammo and don't believe they are anything more than practice full power rounds. I use new ammo in my carry. Thank you for evidence my decision is correct. I enjoy your work.

I have never seen such wide velocity variations in any production ammo, ever.

It is rare that a bullet will not expand in water jugs, even lower velocity modern ammo. Bullet construction has improved greatly in recent years!

I agree. I figure a round through the 6" not expanding in water jugs, why waste the rounds in clear ballistics?

If dude pawned those rounds, it might mean they were stored in a hot humid old tool shed.

That is possible. But it's a round I can't find locally normally.

Fifty years ago when I first started shooting, completely self-taught, I always sprayed my ammo with WD-40 because I lived in a rainy climate area. I thought that a penetrating oil could keep water out of the powder, but NOT degrade it! Maybe the previous owner of these Corbon rounds did that too?....................................elsullo

If this is truly Corbon ammo, I'm guessing this ammo wasn't kept in ideal conditions as it's just not at all consistent in velocity. When ammo is purchased from a Pawn shop which was pawned from someone at some point we really don't know if the ammo is genuine. The same goes for buying ammo from someone off the street. Any ammo could have have been put into the Corbon box. It could have been reloads, or another brand of ammo. It's hard to say which scenario we have, but in any case the ammo is very inconsistent.

The casings are at least Cor-Bon and they look right. But anything is possible. I will admit I enjoy hunting for things I don't see everyday and have another pawn shop find that may be tested in the near future

Bummer. Velocity is all over the place. It is tough to find anything that reliably expands out of a snubby. If you can find a +p Remington "rosebud" 3/4 or semi jacked hollow point I had good results years ago with a handload. It was a 140 grain using Unique. Maybe Remington offers a factory load.

Remington Golden Saber and Winchester Ranger rounds have performed pretty well. Problem is, can't really find them much anymore.

Very interesting results. Those chrono readings were all over the map! Not good. I've been trying to find some good defense ammo for my .38 snubby (I don't carry it very often), but it seems to be hard to find. I am a huge fan of Federal HST ammo, and it's loaded with the HST "short barrel" rounds, which Federal no longer makes...bummer. Any suggestions would be gladly accepted. I've got a couple of boxes of 9mm Cor-Bon that I bought years ago when they were "the thing" in defensive ammo, but I guess I'll just use them up.🤷‍♂😄

From what is currently available on the market for HP ammo, off the top of my head I'd say Federal Hydra Shop DEEP and the Federal Punch seem to do pretty good. DEEP seems better overall but is a premium in price as well. The old Remington Golden Saber and Winchester Ranger rounds are solid, but hard to find. The non-expanding defense rounds seem to be gaining popularity as well - Underwood Extreme Defender. I tested them in 380 but not in 38.

I don't know if corbon changes it's bullets often, so do you know what you are getting? I have a subscriber keeps mentioning them but idk. Corbon send me some pills!

I think these were proprietary at the time. I think Skogens Gun Supply currently has these for sale online(at least the advertisement looks similar). I saw some variance with the 380 by Cor Bon in prior tests more than I liked as well.

The Corbin DPX does much better

Haven't picked up a box of those yet. Still have a back log of "to do" tests I'd like to get done. But I'm always on the lookout for interesting things, especially those rounds not everyone has tested before.

@@NorthwoodsTesting The DPX performs like Barnes, but are a little hotter. Also check out Gorilla Ammunition. Haven't seen alot of tests online of those. I want to try some.
