After graduation from UWI. I spent fifteen years managing scuba operations, during that time I watched the decline of Jamaica's coral reefs. It was severely depressing, I saw the last healthy reefs before hurricane Allen, then the sea urchins died off and the herbivores were fished out and the damselfish set up areas where no herbivores could enter. Algae took over and now we have Lionfish, the final nail in the coffin for our coral reefs which will soon be algae reefs. I see little hope of recovery, the political will is not there. Our reefs suffer from the effects of unemployment on land and many other factors.
I knew something was wrong with the sea from I was growing up in Jamaica. My father is a fisherman in Savanna-la- mar and he would go out all night to catch fish and returned back home with just a few pound. Am glad something is been done about this over fishing.
