Cordless Robotic Pool Cleaners
Cordless robotic pool cleaners represent the convenience of modern technology. Their primary advantage lies in their ease of use. Without the constraint of a power cord, these cleaners can move freely throughout the pool, unhindered by tangling or needing to stay within a specific range of a power outlet. This mobility simplifies the cleaning process and ensures that every corner of the pool is accessible, even those farthest from the edges. Of course, in theory, the cleaner should be able to clean a larger area, but cordless cleaners are only for medium to small pools because of the limited battery life.
The downtime required for recharging can interrupt the cleaning schedule, and with up to a 4-6 hour recharge time, using cordless cleaners multiple times a day is problematic. The reliance on battery power generally means they have less powerful motors, which can impact their cleaning efficiency. Many manufacturers get around this by using more oversized micron debris canisters of 100-180 microns. It could be better for pools with a lot of fine dirt. While they are suitable for regular maintenance and lighter debris, they might need help with more substantial cleaning tasks or heavily soiled pools.
The cost of cordless robotic pool cleaners is another factor to consider. Their advanced battery technology and convenience often come at a higher price point. This initial investment might be a deterrent for some, especially when compared to more affordable corded models. You can get a cordless robot for as little as $400, but it will lack some premium features.
Corded Robotic Pool Cleaners
Corded robotic pool cleaners, on the other hand, are known for their robust performance and reliability. One of their most significant advantages is the ability to operate continuously. They can run for extended periods as long as they remain plugged in, making them ideal for thorough, uninterrupted cleaning sessions. This capability is particularly beneficial for large pools or those that accumulate significant debris, ensuring every cleaning cycle can be completed without recharging. The ability to program a weekly cleaning cycle in some models is ideal for those who want a clean pool daily.
The performance of corded cleaners is generally superior regarding power and suction capabilities. You can also easily filter down to smaller microns, with some being able to filter down to 5. With a constant power supply, these models can employ more powerful motors, resulting in more effective cleaning. They are particularly adept at handling heavy-duty cleaning tasks, such as removing large debris or scrubbing stubborn dirt and algae from pool surfaces.
Corded robotic pool cleaners also tend to be more cost-effective. The absence of expensive battery technology makes them more affordable upfront, making them an attractive option for budget-conscious pool owners.
Choosing between cordless and corded robotic pool cleaners hinges on the specific needs and preferences of the pool owner.

With the corded cleaners, would they be an acceptable replacement for the pressure cleaner? Also do they tangle easy and the cord come out of the socket? I’d be concerned I’d have to be watching for that.

Almost every cleaner with a cord has a swivel for anti-tangle. It's not a problem with any Polaris, Dolphin, or BWT cleaner. Many pressure cleaner owners go to a robot since you are used to the 2 hour cleaning cycle.

Are any of the batteries replaceable? The battery will degrade over time. I would need to get more than 5 years out of it

That remains to be seen. I am sure they are plug-and-play. I'm thinking 3-4 years at least as a good battery life.

My corded pool cleaner says I shouldn’t leave it under water. Do all corded pool cleaners have that limitation? Ideally I would just leave it in the pool all summer

It should be fine in the watyer 24/7. The motor is water sealed.

They're probably saying this because the chlorine will kill the robot faster.

how do you work around it getting stuck on curved steps?

Most of these shouldn't have any issues with steps. Aside from maybe the Aiper Seagull Pro.

I believe the firmware update is coming in 2 weeks. It does seem to have a little brain damage. 😆
