Here's one for the lovers of curios, gadgets and gimmicks. This 'Core' record repeater is one of several such devices built and marketed during the 1920's and 30's. When placed on a 10" record it will catch the needle at the end of the track and return it to the beginning allowing you to listen to the same record over and over -- or until the spring winds down anyway!
And before anyone decides to tell me how bad this is, I MUST STRESS THE FOLLOWING: I would normally adhere rigidly to the rule of using each needle only once and would not recommend using a repeating device such as this on a regular basis as it seems pretty hard on the records - I certainly wouldn't use it on any of my 'good' records. It is shown here only for the purpose of demonstrating this gramophone-related oddity.
The record used is actually a badly worn old copy of "Dinah's Holiday" played by the Trio Nuovo (xylophone, saxophone & trumpet -- with effects) on the Regal label, N°. G7917 dating from 1923.
The gramophone used for this clip is my G&T New Victor (Baby Monarch) which dates from 1905-1907. Please visit www.thegramophonecollector.com for further details of my collection.
