Here are some thoughts on dialing in a core tone...my philosophy on where to start! Happy to answer more questions in the comments below. Thanks for watching!
Great video ❤thanks for taking time to make this content. I feel same way. Get your core amp sound going first, as your main tone foundation, then the pedals will be like the icing on the cake. ❤ praising Jesus Christ for your ministry brother! 🙏
Super helpful video! Thanks for sharing this. - It would be cool to see your philosophy for running two amps and how you approach dialing them in together. Do you set one bright and the other darker? I would love to see how you set the knobs on your matchless and your vox!
The core tone idea is such great place to build from. I’m just running a Squire classic vibe tele and I purchased a Boss Katana 50 last year and it has such a vast array of effects to draw from but I’ve stripped it right back to just juts two or three top. Great video Dan!
Loving the content, man. I would love to hear you share some of your knowledge on things more music industry specific. I.e what producers want out of guitar players in a studio session and tools for success in the studio. Or how to approach auditions/touring with an artist. Would also love to see you break out the thinline tele.
Definitely will do a thinline Tele episode soon! Love that guitar. Thanks for the kind words and for tuning in...I love your idea! A discussion and examples of what producers want and tools for studio work...there is a whole world of discovery just in that topic alone. Pumped to try and break that down...thanks for the idea! ;)
Hey Daniel, great videos! I love hearing how a touring pro approaches tone/gear/chord structures, very cool! Had a gear question: I remember you saying you run both an ac 30 and a matchless amp when you're playing live. How would you say those amps diff in characteristics and tone? I've haven't yet had the opportunity to play through a matchless but I hear so much hype about them. Appreciate your knowledge :-)
Daniel, to get a great swell tone with your pedals, where should your volume pedal be in the chain? I have heard it should be first or after overdrive. What do you use and what is your thought process? Your swells are always so full!!
Another great thing to think about with pedals is buying pedals that can do more than one thing. All 5 of the pedals on my board are simple but multi-functional, so you don't have to buy tons of stuff. I have a modulation pedal that has several sounds, and a delay pedal with several repeat types. Most of the time the tone is pretty basic. Also a single multi-stage overdrive like a Fulldrive 2 Mosfet is like having about 5 different pedals in one.
Man that tele through your Matchless sounds so good. Don't need a full video on this, but what is your signal chain for recording? Are you just using an SM57 on the cab?
Ben Chambless thanks man! yes! For these videos, I’ve been using a 57 only on my guitar cab. Trying to keep the signal chain simple so that the examples I show are not too doctored up 👍🏼
These have been really interesting! I saw you a few years ago and noticed when you were using a capo you would take it off to tune the guitar and then put it back on. What’s the thought process there? Probably not a whole video idea but thanks for your time!
This is sort of a preference thing...we have a lot of quick transitions between songs and it helps me if I have to quickly take the capo off and play the next song. if I tune specific to the capo and then have to take it off really quick then the guitar is out of tune....really just depends on the setlist. re-tuning once the capo on is definitely best for studio or if you have the time in a live setting :)
Daniel Carson Guitar that makes sense! Basically a happy medium between the 2 positions. Thanks for responding and doing these videos. Your playing has always been very inspiring so it is fun to have a behind the scenes look. Blessings on your ministry!
So I'm not sure if this qualifies as "core tone," bit can you tell me about your set up to get that tone on Holy Water during Good Friday Worldwide. It just came through my TV but wow. I was looking down when you went into the riff and my eyes shot up to the screen. I wish the song had been recorded that way.
Hey man, If I remember right that was a tube screamer stacked w/the king of tone (maybe yellow side?) for the main lick. what I was really aiming for was getting enough top end so that the neck pickup on the Les Paul could cut through...i used an octave up on the POG and a touch of delay and verb (very subtle) hope that helps!
Daniel Carson Guitar I'd say you succeeded. It was the top sound on the chord at the end of the riff that caught my attention. I was a little surprised when I looked up and you had an LP.
