Thanks to Brilliant Classics I discovered Corelli and now enjoy his Concerti Grossi daily. This music brings joy and beauty while one carries on with everyday life.
I've only recently discovered Corelli's Concerti Grossi here and I must say that listening to his lyrical Baroque pieces brings me so much joy that I feel exuberant. These masterpieces here are so delicately wrought, like the finest porcelains and faience of this same period, that listening to them is an extremely elevating experience, making me feel quite cozy on a frigid winter evening. Thank you Brilliant Classics for this wonderful post, with a nod to Musica Amphion and the excellent harpsichordist/conductor Jan-Pieter Belder for such a glorious rendering of these under appreciated gems.
RU-vid has made my entire music collection obsolete. The only medium of recorded music now that i use, other than RU-vid, is my bedside boombox so I can listen to cassettes or the radio in bed. Sigh. Now when I want to hear glorious music, I only have to turn to an appropriate channel here. and get a really long 'concert' of uninterrupted joy. BTW, I subscribed.
I study with this music playing in the background and it seems to focus my mind like a magnifying glass. These Baroque composers were in touch with more than music theory - they understood something about how the brain works. They knew how to pleasurably stimulate the brain without being intrusive. They must have created their masterpieces while they themselves were in the alpha wave state of mind, a state of heightened awareness and deep relaxation. They didn't know about alpha waves back then, of course, but what I'm saying is they intuitively knew how to seduce the brain through music to go into an alpha state of mind. Scientists say listening to baroque music harmonizes both hemispheres of the brain, which improves concentration and memory. Either way, the effect is the same - music that helps your mind focus on what you're trying to learn and memorize. So I highly recommend listening to Corelli as you study for an exam. I always do well on my exams and I owe much of my success to Corelli's genius! I especially like the music that starts at 34:18 and the sweet, soothing melody that starts at 1:19:05. If that beautiful sound doesn’t bring your mind into that relaxed alpha state, nothing will.
The best interpretation so far that I've heard, allowing the individual instruments to stand out and to shine. There is an excitement and a respect to how this music is performed. Brava!
Your absolutely spot on Anna! The music of Corelli is Heavenly and it saddens me that most people have not even heard Corelli! What a gifted artist in every sense!
I have it on vinyl, it's one of my precious possessions, certainly a grail for me. An album that I do not play much because I do not want the magic to stop, I want it to stay as fresh as the first time I heard it !
I got compete collection of Corelli Pieter-Jan Belder Musica Amphion, for me they are the best! Anyway, still thanks for uploading, truly excellent performance!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here we have an ensemble of brilliant virtuoso soloists, each of them making an individual contribution. So different to the 19th century romantic ideal of a lone soloist up against an increasingly powerful symphony orchestra.
Corelli is praised to have set up the norms os the Italian baroque style, both in the trio and solo sonata, and in the concerto grosso. This is partly true. he put some order in a style which was still looking for its consistency. But we should amire how these concertos are different from each other, and how they are composed often piecewise, with several sections in the same movement. Corelli was rightly praised by the Italians anf the foriegners that looked for unfieid stles lije 'les goûts réunis" of Couperin, who payed a tribute by writing a large preogrammatic sonata in trio as a tribute to Corelli, just as he did for Lully.
Fuck, Gérard, the next time you post a comment in English, activate the Spell-Check feature of your Web browser (in English, of course) so that you don't shit on my native tongue. French is a beautiful language, but so is English, and much more universal, too. Comprendre?
Thank you, Gérard, your informative comments are always appreciated - adding a dimension of knowledge to our listening. Ignore the troll-trash, too, & their tasteless remarks.
Autodidact2. Really? REALLY? You expect a foreigner to write perfect English when millions of our compatriots cannot even speak it correctly? Let alone write it correctly? And YOUR language........!! You purport to admire the English language, yet you utterly debase our flow of beautiful words and construction with your utterly foul, vulgar, crude words? Unbelievable. In the midst of talking of the beauty of language, in the midst of listening to beautiful music, you debase everything, including yourself! Grow up child and use correct decent grown up language. You disgust me. Get off here you vile creature.
I absolutely love to listen to this music as it is so positive in comparison to studying. Who is listening to this whilst doing something else??? However, the the quality of the sound is not the best but I absolutely have nothing against it. 😊 😊 The utter best of musicianship at its zenith!!! I love many composer's music bu this ranks extremely high though that is in my personal opinion. 😍 😍
@@janvanc7190 I'm sorry but Boccherini was born in 1743, just 7 years before J S Bach died and neither his music nor our perception of it would be considered "Baroque." Also Franz Joseph Haydn was 11 when Luigi was born which places him clearly in the time of truly "Classical" music.
Corelli, sadly, is often overlooked when it comes to naming composers. His works just shine of pureness, richness and nobleness, though not in an arrogant manner; at least that's what I feel when listening to him. Truly, a man deserving of the title maestro.
The vast majority of composers are ‘overlooked’ including even the most famous such as Beethoven where most lovers of classical music would struggle to say they really know 10% of his music; ditto virtually every other great composer. In other words, probably 90% of Beethoven is ‘overlooked’, and in Corelli’s case, that figure rises above 99%.
Bendiciones.
The concerti grosi op. 6 of Corelli became in their time the european standard against which each composer had to position himself. Here, we have a very delicate and sensitive rendering of these concertos - among which the famous N°8, 'for the night of Christmas'.
Well said. Today, quality of interpretation is still set as a standard for these pieces, long after Corelli's standards for composition have been "set," & evolved.
Daniel Rubin. Oh I think he did! Parts of the Messiah move me to tears. Especially thinking “Handel is quoting and believing in the Bible almost 300 years ago, just as I do today”. And sets it to heart stopping music.
I love Corelli. I love Handel. They are both beautiful, sophisticated, and elegant- each just in their own way. It doesn't do justice to either to compare them together. You have to try to understand each on their own terms.
We insignificant humans, without even having less than 1% of the talents of these maestros who tread in this world centuries ago when there was no technology of recording, replaying, improving, etc., find pleasure in slighting their contributions! By the way, I have never heard about Rubin maestro, when you die who will remember you in this beautiful world?
So, this morning I specifically chose Corelli: Concerti Grossi Op.6 as I take time out to assist my baby sister, Dolores Plunkett in the process of addressing and mailing out "Thank You" cards for all the wonderful family, friends and organizations that sent sympathy cards, plants, flowers, money, food, their time and presence just honor Mr. Joe Louis Plunkett, Jr. Tomorrow (08-01-17) will mark exactly one month since his death. This music brings me joy, peace and I actually can sway in movement from this great concerti.
