The fact that Corey can cut off half way through a verse, take a break, then jump right back in to the exact pitch needed from where he left off.. All while belting it at the top of his lungs.. Freaking amazing talent
Mattchew Why To be fair, cutting into a measure is pretty standard in the studio. You don’t want to lose on a good take just because you fucked one word or note, so you cut in at the point you messed up. When you do that, you start on a new track and you can hear the prior track in your phones so you have reference. Not trying to take away from Corey, he’s stellar. Just saying that is pretty much the normal way of tracking.
this is why dave grohl is awesome. He writes music and then finds the artists who can take it to the next level and make it what its supposed be. true passion for music, bringing multiple eras of rock together to make magic.
Jonny Mojo don't forgot the analog board their recording on, it's the last of its kind. It's the one Dave bought last minute from the closing of Sound City. There's a docu that Dave produced and directed and has a bunch of songs with diversly different pairings and this is one of those songs on there.
hudson It’s still pretty special to produce an whole album by yourself, as in instruments and recording etc. Not saying foo fighters are the today’s Beatles of rock, but Dave Grohl is pretty awesome to have done that all by himself. It’s a bit harsh to call him or even the rest of the band generic trash with the talent they do have, I’m not saying they’re amazing or not trash, just seems a bit harsh. I could be wrong though 😂 the pretender was quite similar to Sesame Street ‘one of these things’.
@hudson Thats a generic trash comment. It's not special.... but at least they can sing, play instruments, write lyrics, and generate music. What'd you do today?
@hudson Pretty sure he didn't say that Dave was the only one recording analogue. Tool is killer, but this isn't tool. And it's better than the manufactured bunk that's being churned out nowadays - ie Machine Gun Kelly and other crap
Stone Sour and Slipknot come from same town. Stone was fairly popular locally when Slipknot formed. They knew he had charisma and asked him to join. Once Slipknot made it SS also became big. But it's at least a year older than slipknot.
Monkey Business Super Puppeh Can't you guys tell a joke? That guitar has been around a long while, Dave bought it in 1990 or thereabouts, he's recorded just about everything on it, and he's not just a riff monster.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched this.... but when Rick starts shredding, everyone else turns into a 13 year old boy the first time hearing real music. Just grins and space! Love it
Imagine having Rick shred on that guitar right in front of you...yeah that's what happened in East Lansing a long time ago. I was on a guitar high for a week..college days.
Yeah, I am a metal head, but admittedly only like a few Slipknot songs... Fucking love Stone Sour though. Corey is a beast... And yet still has the sweetest melodic voice out there.
Watch the documentary sound city. Dave bought the Nieve?? Console they used to record on and invited members from bands that used to record there. (Where foo fighters recorded, and slip knot, petty, nirvana, etc) great film for music lovers. Check it out.
Cause Rock and metal don't sell anymore, the award shows such as the Grammy's don't even televise the Rock / Metal award section of the show anymore, they are more concerned with appearing " woke " and only HORRENDOUS modern Hip Hop and pop gets any attention. Sure when Slipknot put out a new album it will top the charts for a week or two but then the album's dead , gone are the days that a Album will have commercial legs for 2 years ( i.e. The Black Album, Hysteria , Appetite for Destruction etc.....). And Slipknot are now a legacy act and have they're inbuilt fan base. It's impossible for new Rock to dominate the musical zeitgeist, even though of course this isn't anything " New ". But yes , it's a awesome song and should have had more attention.
@@andysalter7192 as disheartening as the current state of metal may be, there is still a market for anything. As small and hard to find as it may be, it still exists. At least that's the hope that I'm running with lmao
@GatorDrummer genuinely don’t remember the last time i listened to the radio lmao, and no i’m not a diehard slipknot fan, but i know a good voice when i hear one
Corey Taylor is one of the best male voices ever. So versatile, so much soul and so much passion and aggression all in one. Simply great! And a true professionell as this video shows. 👍
"You're gonna be a pro in the next half hour" is a really polite way of saying "Were doing this, so figure it out." Gotta love a guy who knows what he wants and knows how to get everyone around him to achieve it 👍
I took it more as him complimenting his ability to play the guitar. If he said 'You better be a pro in the next half hour', then it would make sense, but if he wanted to say 'Were doing this, so figure it out', 100% he would have been more direct to Rick Nielsen
Dave: Corey tell them all to shut the fu- shut the fuck up! Corey: I'm uh supposed to tell everyone to uh shut the fuck up.. Dave: Oh, Slipknot guy is pretty polite!
Man, Corey is such a talented guy. I love when these metal dudes start their careers screaming and people(parents) write them off as garbage. Then later in their careers they show they can do the traditional singing stuff. They just chose to scream. Love it.
I love how Corey Tayor told Butch Vig, the producer of Nirvana's Nevermind, to let him know if he needs to enunciate more. Butch should have said, "If I didn't tell Kurt Cobain to enunciate, then I'm certainly not going to tell you to enunciate."
@@ariescustom Except that both sing with a distortion pretty much all the time. They literally have 2 different singing styles. So, by saying that one is better is pretty hard. It's a matter of liking tbh.
@@corpseater694 their song is super fast and you can still listen to the words he's singing. If you want same as studio. Listen to their album. Don't watch the live. 😂
I do not think that was a slight to Rick. Editing is the hardest part of creating anything. We would never have the awesomeness of much music, food and experience if people could not find a way to edit and commit at least a version of the idea. Live performance offers the chance to express other feelings and iterances, but the committed version is often the one playing in our own minds year after year.
Corey's the real deal. No doubt about that. Thats what's always made me mad about people saying "metal bands are talented, its just a bunch of noise and screaming". Yeah, in a lot of cases it does sound like that, but they don't realize its all on purpose. Not to mention, metal is just ONE genre musicians play. Most metal guys I know (including myself) can also play blues, rock, classical, etc. And listen to Corey - the dude can sing when the music calls for it. Very powerful, soulful voice.
Stone Sour and anything he has done on his CMFT or Hated tours. Seriously if you haven't watched his Hated set, look it up it is worth spending an hour to watch it all
when i got my freedom, and ran away, i slept in my jeep. i found that once my ears and mind finally picked out all of the nuance and depth. i then really got hungry for metal of a large variety. i was also on a job in indianola iowa, and stopped in des moines to look at guitars and i run into pre first drop for slipknot, theres Corey in the shop looking at stuff. like i swear, 2 months later the guy was the top name in metal. im more of a Stone Sour guy, but i love a lot of Slipknot. also like how he plays with others.
Been watching this since it first came on here in 2013. Everytime I am still blown away when Rick starts really getting into the song, and everyone is just standing around with their mouths agape at what he is playing. Freaking amazing!
and I love when you hear his raspy voice coming thru in the line "Burning my cathedrals" and later on. It amazing how he comes from the most soft voice to the most aggressive one. I'm not much of a Slipknot fan but Corey's vocal range and skills are crazy.
Eriml RGG listen to gently by slipknot...he also goes from really soft to really aggressive in a heart beat, and if you watch the live from thier disasterpieces dvd you can see him switch gears...truly amazing
I accidentally came across this track from a Foo Fighter video-WTF??? WHY have I not heard this beautiful voice before when listening to Slipknot? Goosebumps!
Every time I listen to Corey sing I feel more and more connected with him. His lyrics express my pain and sorrow but also my anger and frustration exactly. It would be an honor to meet the man and share with him that his music has saved my life...
They had their humble beast in their studio. And he turned. God Corey, you are a piece of work. This is amazing. You will always be on my top 10 list of vocalists.
However high you sit, always maintain respect for those around you, who help you. Cory is a straight up savage yet he understands where he is and who is his ppl.
They're not really under any pressure. Dave owns the studio and all the equipment. They don't have to record 12 songs in a week or two because studio time costs out the ass, also other bands aren't waiting on them to be done.
Dave....after watching and listening to this like a hundred times I bought the song. So thanks for making me spend $1.99 so I’ll never lose this emotion thanks to you and Corey!
I will never stop loving the little view we get of the studio here...dam i love the studio. This is what musicians want to see (especially the ones who can't afford the rates of studios) give us more!
Thank you thank you thank you. That was the best 20 minutes of my day. Amazing to see all that talent come all together, I really can't wait til the album release. Keep up the good work guys.
@@originalsongsbyjonathanlew1512 , there is real music and real musicians in each genre , but THAT is the way any real music is done - not choosing between bad takes and good takes, but choosing between great and genius ones
I could listen to this 100 times and not be sick of it, holy shit. Taylors voice is godlike, so much range & emotion, Grohl nothing needs to be said hes one of the best, but that guitar playing by Nielsen gives me chills & I didn't even grow up listening to them, this is one of the best songs I've ever heard, put together beautifully by some of musics best "I'm burnin my cathedrals, cause I don't pray anymore" Damn that's a good line
"This is how your parents used to make albums kids"............Hilarious :D And soooooo true. I miss the good old times....And greetings to all 80's and 90's :) Im from 1983. Greetins from Poland. Stay Sic!
I don't think I've ever been more emotionally moved by a single vocalist in such a short amount of time. Corey Taylor is one HELL of a man, and he knows what he's doing, and he's doing it right. Long Live Rock and Roll.
Anti Retard Equation corey taylor has 6 Octaves. He’s always had that range while singing. He has a more natural low voice though so if you compare someone who can sing high like Axl Rose to Corey, Axl’s will seem a lot more high even though they are hitting the same note.
Corey Taylor had a 5 octave voice AT BEST. Christ everyone on here is worshipping. After D-F5 hes pretty much useless except for whistles and odd noise artifacts (which are NOT singing). To give you all an idea, Mariah Carey has about a 6 octave voice if you count her super low register range in the D-G1 range.
never really liked him as a producer, everything that man touches sounds bland and like everything he has touched before. A good producer would make sure the sonic identity of the band remains intact
@@miguelnascimento2847 Ya you're right, Nirvana Nevermind was bland. The Smashing Pumpkins Gish and Siamese Dream bland bland bland, Sonic Youth, Green Day, Soul Asylum.. bland bland bland. Wait. Do we have the same definition of bland? It means - the bands best selling albums that went platinum infinity, right? No? Oh ok. Well then hey, you're still free to your opinion regardless of how off base it is to the vast majority of people who like good music. (Find it funny you use the term "sonic identity" unless it was a tongue in cheek comment alluding to Sonic Youth. In which case, I take back my comment, and raise your comment to a well played - thumbs up. ;D
@@ricktremblay2411 listen to the music released by all those bands and compare with and without him producing it and you might get my point. He has a sound of his own that (to me) sounds bland, he turns whatever he works with from raw to something pop'ish sounding. This is my view on him and it's a subjective opinion on the perception I have of sound so I couldn't care less about the opinion of the masses that listen to "good music" since my point remains no matter the argument, because there isn't one.
@@miguelnascimento2847 I have listened and owned all those albums actually. The Pumpkins are my favorite band, and Gish is raw, while Siamese Dream was anything but bland. Anything that cannot be place in one genre, and I'll take a quote from an online resource which states it well: The Pumpkins sound is ANYTHING but bland: 'disavowing the punk rock roots of many of their alt rock contemporaries, they have a diverse, densely layered, and guitar-heavy sound' (I love the guitar distortion, its what hooked me) 'containing elements of gothic rock, heavy metal, dream pop, psychadelic rock, shoegazing, and electronica in later recordings.' Since you're already on RU-vid try watching some of the series What Makes This Song Great Episode 23 Smashing Pumpkins, and while he could have chosen better songs, it at least gives a much more fair appreciation of elements in a musical composition of a song, that isn't always obvious to people. Not just Pumpkins songs. He does Nirvana songs as well. Boston - More Than a Feeling is a great example of the effort that went into great music. And I don't know why everyone thinks any essence of pop is any indicator of a lack of anything. Pop is short for popular. Meaning it's accessible and appreciated by a wide audience. Since when does wide appreciation mean inferior? If anything it connects people. People made up of every sort of person from audiophiles to musically intelligent, to musically gifted or totally lacking thereof. No one gets to decide what is good music or bad music, but music snobs try don't they? I am only disagreeing with your statement because I feel it to be baseless, other than the use of the pop reference as some type of self explanatory indicator. Musical taste and peoples opinions on musical acceptance or lack thereof isn't a currency that gets you in any clubs, shows or events. Now if you 're talking about manufactured crap that is common nowadays, and reached node critical the day someone tried to give Chad Kreuger a nickle back.. that's more along the lines of acceptable conditions for agreeable opinion. But it's all still just an opinion. Not any single one is the be all end all for everyone or anyone.
I don’t even have to say this because everyone knows it, but I just have to say it anyway: Corey Taylor is a true once in a lifetime talent and one of greatest rock singers of this generation. His voice is so dynamic; he goes from soft to soulful to brutal effortlessly. One of my favorites.
And Rick Nielsen is a gifted amazing man. Dave pulled such a great group together. This has helped inspire me to write what was supposed to be a short story into a novella. Thanks to all y'all.
This could be the coolest video I've seen in so long. Was totally geeking out with the whole thing. Rick man, swear that guy can play anything like he's been playing it his whole life. So want to see like hours more of this video!!!
