Any “romance” book that markets itself as a “modern Romeo and Juliet” is INSTANT red flags for me 😭 did y’all not take middle school literature class? Romeo and Juliet was not romance, its clearly a satirical tragedy 💀

There was no literature class in my middle (or even high) school but our English teachers made sure to stress that about this play. But not everyone pays attention in class. I have very similar thoughts whenever I hear people talk about this play as a romance. I don't know why someone would look at Romeo and Juliet and think "relationship goals." It's just bizarre to me.

Wait, Rainbow Rowell. I don't want to give the specifics but I briefly met her 30 plus years ago at a relatives house. I don't think we exchanged words. I was visiting relatives and she stopped by. I'm significantly younger so it's not like we had anything in common. I remember readimg her Omaha World Herald column.

It's very much an "online something wonderful core" look but Rachel, you work online so it doesn't hit like you are a bank teller, altho I think it works for that too! I am commenting under multiple comments because I am sure that look just feels a bit un-real, that awesome negative space liner really changes the face, but please keep doing fun looks. I was afraid to be fully creative w makeup when I was young and I know I can do any look I like, but I feel bizarre at 52 in fantasy makeup, and my 2 honest young coworkers agree that age doesn't dictate style, but some looks just "red flag" an older woman as being off kilter, plus it looks less enchanting on wrinkles. Now I enjoy gravitas makeup that has a more intimidating feel, cuz if you just try a little to be a grown up at 52, ppl actually will do what you say lol 😂 also, if you skip the tip of the nose with blush & highlighter (that barely shows for us btw, but i did it accidentally yesterday & know what it looks like in the mirror - cute but cartoon) , it looks more like another of my favorite looks "faux wind burnt" altho only us lesbians seem to want to look obviously sun/climate damaged, it's a whole 'nother level of weird vs fake tan. But I like it lol, I m outdoorsy but I use spf & aquaphor so I gotta fake the sun damage...luckily I have excellent crows feet/eye smile crinkles.

This is the worst type of a wish fulfillment fantasy. This is the fantasy of a person who's still obsessed with they're ex, while most people who read these settings want revenge fantasy's. Like, I want a book about a woman who gets Cast Out and then finds love on the outside and then goes back home to visit and realizes that the man from her past isn't all that great.

So, I actually really enjoyed this book, in large part due to that authenticity that sucked me in (I wasn't raised fundie, but devout Catholic and there are some real overlaps with regards to cultiness), and apparently because I didn't realize it was a romance. I thought it was a literary fiction novel so I expected the sex to be bad. I read it because I wanted to find out if Stephenie Meyer wrote it and came to the same conclusion that no, no, it's not her. But I do think there was only one author here, and I think it was Laurie Halse Anderson. It not only read very much like the style of her YAs, but she grew up with a reverend father AND ended up marrying her childhood sweetheart after divorcing her first husband. And her YA seems to pull from stuff in her real life.

It could be someone secular or mainstream, too. Esp if older & raised rural. I learned A LOT from my friends' churches & conversations, us "regulars" would discuss the more devout faiths in detail, we were very curious. So many rules & complicated lies, but also some things that are now "fundie" were pretty standard before the great secularization of the 70s-90s. If you grew up in the non-urban middle in the 80s, you probably know a lot about evangelical/fundie churches. Plus there's a lot avail online, a lot of us raised secular, or who are just incapable of faith, consume endlessly trying to fully "get it" (ie, why people believe/stay, how one would come to believe, etc). As a naturally faithless person, I sometimes want it very much, but it seems so scary too.

In regards to the book, I think your theory of this book being written by multiple different authors makes a lot of sense. Especially when it comes to your reasoning about how the sect is clearly a mish-mash of other Fundie Sects. In regards to your makeup, however, overall, I really like it! the white lines on your eyelids was distracting for me, personally, but everything else, ESPECIALLY the cheeks/nose blush was Super cute! I also love how it kind of wraps up to your eyes with the pink/peach and the stars. It's a very neat idea. One that I hope you revisit some time! I love that the quote rec on the front is Jodi Picoult because it tells me I have NO INTEREST in something that sociopath writes. *grumbles more about My Sisters Keeper

I’ve tweeted Jodi a few times and she’s very nice. She’d probably respond 😂

I have not read the book and I have absolutely no horse in this race, but I'm going to be a Pout-Pout Fish Truther just for the lulz

I swear this feels like someone trained an AI on religious deconstruction videos and then told it to write smut. That's why its has a handful of very specific relatable experiences from different ex-fundie lived experiences, but no religious consistency that would lead you to be like "a-HA that's definitely Mormonism!"

Before I get into the video I have to say, Rachel, you're makeup is not as bad as you think. Is it your best look? No, but it's fun and different and in no way do you need to apologize for your face. 🧡

I laughed sooo hard at the livestream! And alot of this sounds like super fundamental Roman Catholic. with Saints and elders. I grew up in a super rural sect though, no clue what it's like elsewhere

It's not Roman Catholicism. Catholics don't cast out they "excommunicate"
