The Corliss Steam Engine Co. made more than just steam engines. Here is a behind the scenes look at the museum at a Corliss Cannonball Safe hidden away in a basement. It's an interesting design with ornate artistry and craftsmanship. A truly unique piece!

I could write a book about that Corliss safe. Only because I was going to write one. It is more like 32,000 lbs. and was designed and made by William Corliss, George's younger brother. While George supplied the power house steam engine for the 1876 Centennial, William had several of his brand new safe on display there. As near as I can tell William made around 400 safes over approximately a 20 year period although most were much smaller and lighter. The company was then sold to Mosler Safe who made another 300-400. Yours is not the only Corliss to make it back to Providence. When I was up there I drilled one open in a bank downtown. There are 2 inside the vault at City Hall, but again smaller ones. I hope to make it back up at some point to get the locking mechanism back in working order, as someone had messed up one of the locks. Not many of the 32,000 pounders were made and I only know of one other in existence.

@@444RJE Yes that is the first Corliss I drilled open several years ago. I don't normally strip parts but that is how I was paid for the opening.

Where was the first one you drilled located? Be nice to get out of the vault and bring to first floor level, but then we would have to cut a large enough hole through the top to pull up... don’t think that’s happening.

A local grocery store known to handle a lot of cash to cash pay checks for any and everyone had a version of one of these. As a deputy I worked a guard detail there and stood by that huge safe on pay days.

I had one of those. Found it in a house I bought in Los Angeles. Ended up donating it to TV show American Restoration. Had to move it with a tow truck. The mechanism was a work of art.

7:20 - The surfaces were engraved with a technique called "turning". The finish thus produced is practical as well as attractive - the turned pattern holds oil on the surfaces, reducing both wear and corrosion.

At first I was like "where is the storage part of the safe" then he spun the sphere around

A company I once worked for performed preventive maintenance on safes of all types. This is the first of this type I have seen. I disassembled and serviced many S and G time locks and changed combinations on the combo locks. No one in the bank would have done that, saying that, service individuals would have seen the working area on a regular basis.

Legend has it - that an eccentric businessman kept his toenail clipping collection in one of those unopened lower compartments!

Is it a priceless toenail clipping collection? Perhaps toes of solid gold?

I appreciate you for taking time to make this wonderful video. I am a locksmith and amateur safe-tech (emphasis on rookie safe-tech). Cannonball safes are my FAVORITE type of safes. Ty again.

I thought Corliss Safe was William Corliss - George’s brother. We have a Corliss safe which may be for sale.
