In this video I am out at Convoy Dairy farm near Convoy Ohio with Hall Ag Services as they chop corn silage for the dairy. I was out here two different days and have a good mix of drone and on the ground footage of all the action. In the video is Halls John Deere 9900i self propelled forage harvester with a Deere 772 maize header chopping the silage and back at the silage pile several tractors are pushing and packing the silage on the pile and a nice fleet of trucks hauling the silage from field to farm.
Tractors in the video are
John Deere 9320 with a blade
John Deere 8260R with a blade
John Deere 8245R with a blade
John Deere 7R 250 pulling a sheepsfoot roller.
Thanks for watching this video and this is the last of corn silage videos I shot in the fall of 2021.

I am a chopper operator and splitting fields is probably the most difficult thing of the operation to keep loss to a minimal especially compensation for cross wind and un even fields doesn't help much eather. You will have losses doesn't matter how good of a operator you are .

One large cattle rancher in my area would also take his mixer & have silage partially filled and fed to cattle he was just starting on grain I don't know if it's right or not but that's just the way he operated . Great Video I enjoy all your videos . Keep up the great work

That's a good sized head on that chopper. Definitely need the ponies to run it efficiently, but it can sure cover some acres. They must have all been smiling watching you on the pile with the Razor LOL You shoulda been packing the steeps sides where they can't get with the tractors. No doubt the Razor would climb it.
@Ticky66MN

Mike, you just need to put some big LSW tires on your 4 wheeler to pack the silage.

I've ran a 3 row chopper pulling wagons and your gonna miss trying to watch, operate, drive, think about chicken, it's not easy driving or pulling a chopper plus listening and watching the chopper and tractor all day long 12hrs

Mike, great video as always. I was wondering, why don't they put these 1000 HP engines in the tractors? They only go this high in the choppers. Tractors top out under 700 HP. Just wondering.
@farmhandmike
@farmhandmike Месяц назад
A 1000 HP Tractor would have to weigh around 100,000 LBS to get the power to the ground. It would be gigantic then and maybe too big for transport.

so none of the tractors on the corn pile are owned by Lambs so all of their crop work is custom done?
@farmhandmike
@farmhandmike 2 года назад
I believe some of the tractors belong to the dairy and others to the custom harvester.

Hey Mike, for those who are disturbed by some loss of chopped corn in the field, here is my rebuttal: A) It's gonna happen. B) It don't matter cause the stuff is worth so little. On A, when I was doing this 60 years ago with pull type choppers, there was no way you could open a field without the tractor running over a few rows. We would run the chopper in reverse over those crushed rows, but you always lost some. The modern self propelled choppers solve that problem, but it is harder to get the output into the wagon or trailer. You're gonna lose something somewhere. On B, fresh chopped corn in the field has very little economic value. It gains value when you haul it to the farm, and more value when it is packed into the pile or blow it into the tower silo, and more value when it is fermented. But it is still a very cheap source of nutrients for cattle, which is why we use it so much! A little lost in the field is no biggie. But I do admit that as a kid, I would go out to the field and collect those crushed stalks we lost opening the field. Since the value of my labor was less than zero, this was a reasonable act. If I were paying someone today to drive a chopper for me, I would just ask him to use his judgment about efficiency. None of this applies to high moisture corn--a much more valuable product that common silage.

Hi Mike I'm not a farmer but I do have common sense where I know things will happen like sometimes operators may miss the trucks time to time Like you said fields or un even wind might blow it it happens and I wish people stop criticising GREAT VIDEO

Great video as always. Question..why do they only off chute to the right side of the chopper. I've never seen a video where they go left. Does the chute not swivel around to the left? Is it for the ease of the tractor/semi driver to maneuver around corners. Just curious.
@farmhandmike
@farmhandmike 2 года назад
It’s really operator preference and most prefer the right side. I do have videos of guys running with the spout to the left. Some operators go back and forth (left and right) as they work back and forth across the field
