Corn silage is the most important energy bulk feed, which plays an important stabilizing role in the feed ration of cattle. It is fed year-round and often makes up to 50 percent dry matter.
Silage maize is an easily silage feed because it contains enough water-soluble carbohydrates (about 15%) and has a low buffering capacity (low content of nitrogenous substances, basic elements and nitrates). Therefore, it is possible to produce high-quality corn silage in compliance with all technological conditions, even without the use of silage additives.
For corn silages, the pH is in the range of 3.7 - 4.4. Compared to silage from fodder feed, corn silages are characterized by a higher energy concentration (6.2 - 6.8 MJ NEL.kg-1 dry matter) and an acceptable fiber concentration. Corn silage is also characterized by a lower content of nitrogenous substances (NL), calcium (Ca), vitamins A and D.
Corn silage is a crucial source of energy in ruminant nutrition in our most productive areas. It is an important stabilizing element of rumen fermentation in the year-round representation of feed rations.
Quality corn silage is a good source of structural as well as non-structural carbohydrates as ready sources of energy for protein synthesis. Breeding new maize hybrids with later maturation of the vegetative part of the plant (stay green), resp. The faster maturation of the grain (dry down) also creates the preconditions for using the effect of slower cleavage of corn grain starch in the rumen and its greater passage into the small intestine compared to other grains.
