Among graffiti writers and those influenced by graffiti culture, everyone knows of Darryl “CORNBREAD” McCray, the first person credited in modern history to write his name on the walls for hood fame. In his native Philadelphia, CORNBREAD was known for his repetitive nom de guerre all over the City of Brotherly Love in 1965, about six years before TAKI 183 was acknowledged by the New York Times for starting the writing epidemic in NYC. “New York had actually took graffiti culture about five levels higher than where Philadelphia was at,” says CORNBREAD about the pioneers who started painting subway cars.
In an exclusive interview with Mass Appeal, CORNBREAD, a now mild mannered 63-year-old who still lives in North Philly, came all the way to Manhattan to grab a can of Rusto, get up on a wall on the Lower East Side and give up a piece of history. Aging gracefully has only allowed CORNBREAD to continue to eloquently describe his adventures and what it’s like to be considered the planet’s very first writer. Watch the legend speak about his origins as a young writer in a Philadelphia juvenile detention center, giving autographs to judges while in court and intricate details of the infamous painted elephant story at the Philadelphia Zoo.

@@rustoleum3889 It's the most durable yeah, but lately it's been a lot worse with the cap switch. I have a rusto can from 2002 that still has the male cap and I bought a brand new rusto can with a female cap and the same exact kind. Both black and gloss enamel. Rusto was the kingpin of all American graffiti art. The male cap sprayed by far better. It dripped less and has a cleaner line. Tbh i wish they'd go back. The switch to female was practically the demise of rusto's use in graffiti. It's still good for bombing sure, but now it just drips so much. And tbh i think its been more watered down. Not as much as Krylon (and by god that shit is practically just water and food coloring now) but still noticeable.

First of all This self proclaimed pioneer was in jail in 1965. And tagging has been around forever. Since we knew how to write kids wrote on walls with their date. You see it in movies from the 50s and early 60s. He started in 1967 same time TAKI183 was tagging in NYC, he found that out and changed his story. But Taki is who everyone in NYC copied. Everyone started putting 3 numbers of their street or crew name after their tag just like him to rep their hoods. That was unique and different. Then StayHigh149 took it to the next level with big bubble letters and characters, and also made his tag more stylish with halos and stick figures. as early as 1969 setting the precedent for grafiti as we know it today.

Checkout the graffiti in The Westside Story movie that was filmed in 1960 and then debut in theaters in 1961. Cornbread would be 7 years old in 1961. The play was created in 1957, which would make cornbread 4 years old. I'm not referring to prop graffiti, but to actual real graffiti tags.
