On the piece Matthew said:
“This piece has as its basis, a rhythm in 5/4 from Cornelius Cardew’s well-known work, ‘The Great Learning’. The title alludes to how I began writing this work, during some time off work: working on the composition, then doing bits of spring cleaning while thinking over musical ideas, then going back to my laptop to try to write those ideas down. This also draws some attention to the other forms of labour, domestic and otherwise, necessary to sustain a creative life. Harmonically, it uses a Carnatic (South Indian classical) scale called ‘Panthuvarali’, beginning on D, which I had learned around the same time, and the character of which I especially enjoyed.”
