Let’s face it - kitchen corner cupboard storage solutions are a pain. There are blind corner cabinets ideas that you can design into your kitchen like a lazy Susan or a magic corner but what if your kitchen is already installed?
In this video I will show you an idea for a kitchen corner cabinet storage solution that actually works and you can make yourself.

Having installed over 500 sets of kitchen cabinets I’ve seen my share of blind corner variations. This one is by far my favourite. Nice work.

We remodeled our kitchen about two years ago. The old kitchen had a lazy Susan in the blind corner that my wife passionately hated. This is a large kitchen with plenty of cupboard space so initially we planned on putting standard square cupboards there and wasting the space in the corner. But then my wife came up with the idea of having drawers at a 45° angle under the Countertop and open L-shaped shelves above the countertop. The 45° drawers are nearly twice as long as normal drawers and as you pull them out they look like something that would be seen on an I Love Lucy episode. These drawers hold long items that would be awkward or not fit in a regular drawer. There is still some wasted space in the corner but we love the clown drawers.

A smart solution, I have a corner cabinet with these turning half circles, but I'm not a great fan of these. There is still a lot of space unused with these. and pans and pots on the rear quarter are still difficult to get out without removing the post in front. Also, when lids fall of in the far end of the cabinet it's a hell to get these out. Your solution uses the space better, and with making the front panel a mere ledge and closing the back of the double drawer the 2 problems I described are solved. I'm going to use your design for my new kitchen which I'm going to build myself using the old corpses and hardware because they are still good.

When commercially available draw systems did not fit my corner space I built the same solution as you show here years ago. Worked well except I used self closing slides that turned out to be a problem since they require extra force to pull that is hard reaching for that draw set parallel to the cabinet door. I do not think you used self closing slides that is good. My advice here is to be sure to not use self closing slides. Thank you for a great video.

You actually admitted to making a mistake(drawer lengths) that showed me that you're a real professional worth keeping an eye on, so subscribed. The basic concept is two sections, where one is moved forward, out of the cabinet so that the second section can be moved to the door opening. It doesn't need to have drawers in any of the sections, that's just nice for smaller items. If I was to make one right now, the second section would not have drawers, but just be a platform for storing my Kenwood kitchen machine and its accessories.

Great idea. I have a really difficult cabinet to access in our trailer (caravan?) that is similar but front to back vs side to side and this helps me visualize a potential solution… In case your curiosity is piqued… in the bathroom there is an open cabinet that is about 3 feet (91.44 cm) long but it’s nearly impossible to make good use of because the opening is only about 10” (25.4 cm) from the side of the toilet. Your idea definitely isn’t a solution but it does give me ideas on how to make it more useful than it is right now. Earned a sub 👍

Great idea! and one that could be made by a DIY... I'm wondering how one would be able to screw the bottom plank with the sideway-sliders onto the bottom of the corner-cabinet, with the extended drawerbox blocking the acces to it... its a thight fit i can see on the video and its a bit wobbly... I suggest placing two narrow wooden planks on either side of that bottom plank onto the bottom of the cabinet in wich that plank slides into with 45degree cut edges, that way it fixates the bottom plank onto the bottem of the cabinet. And/or with a slot or opening in the bottem of the extending drawerbox you can reach the bottem plank to screw it onto the cabinetbottem.

The ultimate and most elegant solution is to (re)design your kitchen without corner cabinets. That way you also eliminate the worse yet upper corner cabinet problem. Importantly you also maximize useable counter space (no one does any cooking in the corner). Of course that's not possible for everyone but that's the way an architect would do it!

Great idea - thanks alot! Now I need to figure out how to do this in Alu... Our kitchen (as most kitchens in the Emirates are) is built of Alu profiles... Right now, we have 2 corners with just shelves disappearing into ... nowhere? 😂 This is such a clever design maximizing the use of space while allowing total easy access to everything. I guess if I laminate the ply with thin HPL, it won't look odd in our kitchen. The drawer construction or material is kinda irrelevant here. Not to be picky, but I'd use countersank bolts from the top with the nuts on the caster wheel side ;o)
@aw.artisanwoodworks
@aw.artisanwoodworks Месяц назад
Thank you very much. Yes, switching the nuts and bolts around would have looked better but the honest reason is I didn’t have a spanner to fit between the flanges on the castors so went with it as you saw. You have a good eye to notice that 😁

Thanks lot for this. Nicely done. I noticed the unit shifted downward when the drawers were extended. Were I to try this, I would try to attach one more rail along the rear of cabinet box to help add support and hold the drawer box to the actual cabinet in the rear. Otherwise when it's loaded down, it might really sag when the drawers are extended.

If you do not have the skills to make this unit, google corner storage solutions. There are several similar ready made units. However, I’m not sure how easy they would be to retrofit.
@aw.artisanwoodworks
@aw.artisanwoodworks 3 месяца назад
Yes. I did look at those and they were quite expensive but the fitting of them looked quite difficult in an existing unit, hence my efforts. I’d be interested if anyone has had experience of retrofitting the ready made solutions.

Thanks for the video! I like your style and production quality. I think I would clamp that with a clamp. The amount of force would be at the very least be 10 fold. Why would you use tape instead? 8:57 Why didn’t you use wooden dowels? I’m just curious as I’ve never seen someone using aluminium ones. Very very elegant solution btw! 👌
@aw.artisanwoodworks
@aw.artisanwoodworks 2 месяца назад
Thanks very much. I appreciate it. I've found using tape on edge banding to be very effective and easier to manage than actual clamps. Clamps would definitely give more pressure but for such small pieces I think it isn't necessary. Give it a try next time and see what you think but of course use whatever you think is the best choice in your project. As for the aluminium dowels I did think about using wood, but I wanted something strong and very thin but which wouldn't potentially show through the veneer (which ruled out screws). I have used brass as a decorative dowel in the past but I had some aluminium rods (I think they are for welding but I'm not sure) so thought I'd try those and they worked great. Someone in another comment mentioned bamboo skewers which I might try another time.

There is a link to the drawing shown in the video in the description, which is free to download. It isn’t dimensioned as your cupboard will certainly be a different size from mine but you’ll be able to use it as a template.

Any chance at a follow up video showing fully loaded down drawers and demonstrating that the slides are still happy? That's the biggest failure point in most of these solutions, You end up with 25 lb kitchen aid mixer and a 30lbs of 5 pound bags of baking supplies being levered 2ft out from the attachment point and the slides give up.

I wouldn’t put that much weight in the right hand section that pulls out. The left hand drawers would be fine though.

love this! I am also blessed / cursed with a corner cabinet in my kitchen, unfortunately I live in a rental and I'm not sure I'd want to go to the trouble of doing this (or having it done seeing as how I don't really have the tools... or a workshop). my cabinet is the reverse orientation of yours and what makes it especially terrible is that the cabinet door is quite narrow, like eight inches wide.

If you were to put on the draw sliders underneath the cabinet pointing the other direction, would that work? That way the sliders would be in the opened position when the cabinet is closed, and it would make for an easier time fastening it to the bottom. It seems to me that the main struggle building corners like this is how to fasten the first unit inside the cabinet. Did this make any sense? English isnt my first language.

You added extra wheels to the inner set of drawers. I presume you're concerned that the cantelever of the right drawers is too much weight for just drawer glides?
@aw.artisanwoodworks

Yes, when I tested it the box was tilting downwards so I added the wheels to give extra stability.
