I see why you bought it - it's a nice tree with lots of branches, and the colours are fantastic! I like your philosophy of not cutting too much off your trees - they need their foliage to stay healthy, so yours have a good start by keeping plenty of wood on them. Thanks for your videos; you're a nice bloke. 🇦🇺

Cheers mate, yeah I like to go hard on my trees when necessary, but I think people over-prune their bonsai when in early development. As you say, they need enough branches to grow enough leaves to be healthy.

I got myself one Cornus in last years Authum sale. It has not really atracted me with those large leafs. But you got me motivated to start working on it. Winter silouettes is also pleasing and indeed the wood colour is amazing.
@TonysBonsai
@TonysBonsai Год назад
Yeah I think you just have to forget about them as a summer bonsai and work on the structure and then the ramification to create an amazing winter image.

Cheers Guy. I love deciduous trees in winter, and imagine this in a few years time. It could be stunning.

Dogwood is very hard to wire,for it is the hardest wood all over Europe.. In Germany it is called "Hart-Riegel" which means Hard Bar and was used for doors to shut very secure
@TonysBonsai
@TonysBonsai Год назад
Very interesting thank you. I just checked on the Janka scale, and it comes in at 2150 which as you say is a very hard wood. No wonder I couldn't bend it! 🤣

Foist to comment😊 Fantastic colour and great winter interest with that coral bark. The greens are equally as beautiful with stunning shades of lime and yellow. They have strong apical growth with a long straight upward growth habit so you will need to trim this very frequently to keep it under control. 😊 And totally bomb proof.
@TonysBonsai
@TonysBonsai Год назад
That sounds great. Do you have one? Thanks for the tip on the apical growth. I'll definitely make sure I keep on top of that as it develops.

@@TonysBonsai I have some planted on the border of my driveway, but not as bonsai. Gardeners will often crop these right back, almost to the ground every year since they are such vigorous growers. Their winter colour is exquisite.

Another heart in the mouth video Tony. I was wincing as you were bending that branch and waiting for a loud crack. Boy do you take chances? A great video yet again. I have two of these waiting to be styled but I think that I will use the clip and grow method now after seeing how brittle these trees can be. Keep them coming mate.
@TonysBonsai
@TonysBonsai Год назад
Cheers Mick. I had a great comment by the Green manalishi saying tha dogwood is one of the hardest woods in Europe, so I checked it out and it is indeed far harder than oak or maple, so unless the branches are pretty young, I would suggest that wiring is a bit of a waste of time on these. Good luck with yours, They are beautiful trees.

That’s a fine looking little tree. Yes,,, the dreaded cracking of bending branches. I saw a video on @Eco Bonsai where he pointed out that if you go slowly when bending and keep your eye on the bark at the point of the bend the bark will actually lighten as it’s stretched closer to the cambium and that’s your sign to stop before cracking or breaking. Good luck with that little beauty. Thanks, keep growing

Hi Tony I have just decided that today I am going to the garden shop to by exactly the same variety of a dogwood. I have seen that they have 'Midwinter Fire' in stock. Some plants need very little work to get a very nice look. And the colour of the first year branches is just stunning. Peter

I've got a row of these against my neighbour's cream fence. Look good - and I'd never thought to try a miniature! They're well hard and very vigorous so will tolerate your heart-in-mouth bending, but keep a close eye for wire scars (or scares as the autocorrect has just suggested) in the Spring. Nice one.
@TonysBonsai

I've got 2 of these as pre-Bonsai: 1 with red and one with light green (allmost yellow) bark. They look very beautifull now, but as you said in leaf they are far less spectacular. I find the leaves are a bit big on my plants, but maybe in time (growing in a pot ) they will get a bit smaller.
@TonysBonsai
