A Coronach is the haunting slow lament sung at ancient Scottish and Irish highland funerals, wakes and deaths. It's not commonly written or performed. The Scots music group The Whistlebinkies did a beautiful version on their album "Albannach" (its on youtube at • The Albannach ) which I used as a guide to write the music, and create some harmonies for it too. I start with a simple whistle, and add smallpipes, shuttle pipes, and bellows blown smallpipes creating a full sound. The smallpipes are a softer, inside instrument (unlike the Great Highland Bagpipes) and fit nicely with this loose style of improvisational music. Second time through I add harmonies and even some counter melody thirds. I've included the sheet music (both melody and harmony) I wrote so you can play along or screen shot and print it for practice.
