The first episode (according to the itinerary) supposed to have been filmed in colour was the coach crash - but they couldn't get colour film, so all that colourful footage of the Lake District - to showcase the new technology - couldn't be used - it was all in black and white! The first thing we saw in colour was the hospital scenes - supposedly miles away in the Lake District - but reconstituted in the Granada studios in Manchester - unfortunately, for the first two years or so, studio footage was in colour, but film footage was in black and white - even on the cobbles. In 1971, there was the ITV Colour Strike, which resulted in a lot of colour programmes only being able to be recorded in black and white - unfortunately, Coronation Street was a victim of this - by 1972, colour was restored - now even location scenes are on video instead of film!
