This was a beautiful storyline that gave a considerable backstory to the character of Ena Sharples and in the process allowed viewers to see the softer side of her. What made the plot even better was that it was genuine. No deception, false pretenses or malice. It was Ena's brother reaching out to his kid sister wanting to see her again after more than half a century. It was obvious that the siblings still held each other in fond affection after so long. Ena was very much a "fire and brimstone" presence in the series when the story originally aired, but Violet Carson was able to show audiences that Ena had a vulnerable side that she seldom allowed others to see. This would lay the groundwork for mellowing her out later on......
Annie Walker knew exactly what effect her words would have on Ena. I think I prefer her before she went all posh, or "Very luggage in advance" as Ena would say.
The beer and cheese game comes again in the future. Fred gees birthday do with Mike, Ken, Bert and Alf. Ending with an almighty scratch on mrs walkers sideboard 😅
