This is update 10 of the SARS-CoV-2 discussions we've been having on my Twitch livestreams. This was pulled from a livestream on March 18th, 2020 (apologies for the emotes flying around and the background music). This video goes into a paper the was recently released regarding how different blood types might be more susceptible to COVID-19. I first go over blood types so we can fully understand the paper. I then go over my skepticism about the paper starting at 10:25.
Topics expressed in these videos are mine and mine alone. I am not a medical doctor and all advice you take regarding this virus should be taken from proper agencies like the CDC. The purpose of my streams is to promote awareness and look at the virus from a scientific perspective.
Blood Type Paper: doi.org/10.110...
If you have any questions, let me know in the comments. Thanks and hope you enjoy!

Appreciate the support, everyone! These videos have gotten way more views that I expected. I'll work on producing more off-stream so that there aren't as many distractions popping up. Also, I'm transitioning to online teaching, which is my primary focus, so I won't be able to put out as many coronavirus videos. I'll do my best to keep up with things. You'll see lots of my teaching videos popping up in my channel, though!

@@taliadavid858 Do you have a link to the particular paper(s) in question? I haven't seen much talk on this topic in relation to COVID19
@DrWD40
@DrWD40 4 года назад
@@taliadavid858 A strain of HIV gains entry via both the CCR4 and CD4 receptors on T cells. People who are immune to that strain have the homozygous delta 32 deletion. I haven't read anything about HIV using ACE2. SARS-Cov-2 has only been shown to use ACE2 so they have separate mechanisms of entry. Also the rhesus factor is on chromosome 1 where CCR5 is on chromosome 3 and the delta 32 deletion isn't linked to a negative rh factor. Those are separate genes. I could be misunderstanding what you're trying to say though. Some HIV drugs (lopinavir-ritonavir) were tested and deemed not effective in a study against COVID-19. Some trials are still ongoing though. Besides that study there hasn't been other links between the two viruses. At this time there is little data that supports the link between CCR5 and immunity to COVID19. "ccr5 covid-19" returned 0 results on pubmed. I searched the original SARS and very few results as well. I worry the genetic testing site is pushing that theory for people to pay for tests to see if they have the delta 32 deletions. email is drwd40@outlook.com but there isn't really too much more I can add on the topic since the data is lacking.

Cassandra Meiselbach You’re absolutely kidding yourself if you think some “cleanse” is accomplishing anything. That’s not how the body and the immune system work. Parasites are living things. Viruses are not. I don’t know where your “research” is coming from, but any good feeling you’re experiencing is clearly the result of the placebo effect. Try doing some actual research, like learning how the scientific method works, rather than spreading misinformation.

I never had the flu as a child or teenager, or had a flu shot. When I was in the Navy, I lied, and said I was allergic to eggs, so didn’t get the flu shot, and never had the flu. In 1992, I had my first flu shot, and came down with the Hong Kong flu. I took no flu shots since then. I’m 64 now, and have had the flu only that one time in 1992. I’m A+.
@sylviagenders2508
@sylviagenders2508 4 года назад
I had the Hong Kong flu as a child, but never got it again. My doctor was almost yelling at me because I would not let him give me flu vaccines. My mother had had typhoid as a child, and had a very bad reaction to a typhoid booster as an adult; my son went autistic after his second MMR in 1972, when they were still using live materials; and my left eye lid fell down and drooped heavily ever after a tetanus booster. I won't take vaccines because of all that, plus because of the mercury, aluminum and possibly human fetal tissue. What the mercury does to nerve synapses was filmed by U Calgary in the early 90's. The physician himself had no idea what was in the vaccine he wanted to give me. And it's a catch-22, take our medical treatment, but we won't be responsible if anything goes wrong. So I don't see this as scientific at all, because if they don't know the outcome, then naturopathic medicine cannot be condemned as being unscientific for the same reason, uncertainty of outcome and inability to reliably replicate results. What other people do is their business, and to its credit, our local hospital posts the informational pros and cons on vaccination openly.

Yeah, I know it doesn't work like that, but its still my mantra and has kept me healthy for the 60 years I've been on this rock. I got strep throat in '90 and haven't had but the sniffles since. Not sure if that's blood type, but I'm grateful. One thing I'd be interested to know is how much Neanderthal genetics I have and how that works to my favor/disadvantage, as science has linked our immune system to Neanderthal and have postulated that their immune system was strong, so perhaps that has a say in things? Just theorizing. lol

My revision is that as a teacher myself I’ll say that useless is actually extremely useful!! What we can learn here is that we have a lot to learn here! That is a huge advantage if one is willing to admit to it and your presentation makes it clear that we do not have a grasp on all the vectors in play. Please keep working and know that I greatly admire you Sir.

Two weeks later, still had a sore throat and cough and then my eyes started to secrete mucus like a mild version of pink eye, my lungs had a burning sensation for the next two weeks as if I just finished a hard sprint, sporadic dizziness for the next 4 weeks with headaches off and on. Finally, as of today, I have a light cough. Oh, and extreme fatigue and loss of appetite on and off. It felt like I was feeling better, then I would regress and would feel horrible for the next several days! This happened every few weeks! Actually, the commonity of blood type depends where you live. Mine is 0rh-, which is common in Finland (at least 0rh+is) but less common in England. It is common in Asia, at least in SE Asia, as far as I understand it. But because of the culture, there is STILL chronic lack of donated blood. This set aside, I am the only one in a shared house of 7 people who has has covid-like symptoms. I don't know about the others, except my son is also 0rh-. Of course I have spent most of my time in my room, but there have been plenty of "opportunities" to passing it on when visiting the kitchen with others hanging in there, and shared bathroom and toilets.

There’s something going on with O having both A & B antigens. That’s the difference between the susceptibility between O and B. They should look at that... it’s the combination of A and B antigens... not just A antigens. That is the key to why O is less susceptible and symptomatic/morbid.

Yes, this blood groups stuff is something a woman planning to breed should check out before accepting her prospective breeding mate. Just to be safe. It would be unfortunate if you love him but he is the wrong blood type to safely breed with. I know of such a case. They had one child with the problems from wrong blood group combination but learned from that experience and stayed together, anyway. They adopted subsequent children they desired and it was a perfectly OK family, anyway. They didn't let mismatched blood types keep them apart. They raised the adopted child, a daughter like their own. She did not know she was adopted until it was her time to breed. Her adoptive parents advised her to check blood compatibility with her husband before marrying. It was OK. She then went out in search of her own biological mother and found her, a single mum whose only child was her and who never married. She also found her grandmother in her mid 90's still fit and healthy, plus other biblical family members. All concerned were overjoyed to have been reconnected and had a massive party out in the bush in rural Australia. I saw the happy photos of them all celebrating together. But one person was missing. The adoptive mother. She felt hurt that her adopted daughter would seek out her own real biological mother at a very late stage of the daughter's pregnancy. But the daughter told me why. It is not because she did not love her adoptive mother who raised her. She did. But she knew her own biological mother had given her up for adoption because she was in extremely hard deprived circumstances I rural Australia back then, when single motherhood was highly stigmatised and there was no welfare support, like now for single mothers. The pregnant daughter wanted to share her biological mother's feelings of great emotional anguish at having a child and being forced by circumstances to part with it, though she loved her baby. The biblical mother was present at the daughter's birthing and she handed her baby to her to hold as if it were the one she had to give up, the woman who had just given birth. Her own daughter. The two women were crying in a mixture of joy and sadness, too, that all this had happened to their families. The daughter said to me there was only one thing missing, her biological dad, but she never found him. He was an itinerant harvesting worker, from New Zealand. 'Good looking Bastard, goo, strong worker, but he shot through as soon as he knew he had got the woman pregnant because he knew what was in store if he hung around any longer. Her old man had some guns for general farm use and was a pretty sharp shooter... " one of the older menfolk in this tribal gathering recounted and he pulled out a crumpled old worn black and white photo of some handsome young farm worker country dude in a check shirt and old jeans. The daughter at least got to see a photo of her biological handsome dude father. It was a sad saga in some respects because her adopted mother felt so hurt her adopted child she loved and did so much for would go out in search of her biological mother who had abandoned her for adoption. But her adopted father understood and was agreeable to his adoptive daughter's mission to find her biological parents. This caused friction in his own marriage to the woman with incompatible blood type, despite their lasting mutual love and long marriage. And, sadly, it ended in divorce, shortly after the adoptive daughter found her biology mother, had her baby etc. The adoptive mother never hot to enjoy the grandchildren she had hoped for because this search by her adoptive daughter had caused such a rift in their mother daughter relationship. And the biological mother was pleased to have met the daughter she gave up at birth. But now she wanted to just leave it at that. No further contact. It was so sad...

@Camille Cassatt Mainly, how our rh- factor interacts with a variety of food and pharmaceuticals. It can be fatal. Some RH-s can't tolerate any type of chemical interactions from anything man made. My understanding of blood types (from Bio 102) is that we all have phenotype and genotype blood. Phenotype presents as our blood type and genotype isn't necessarily named as our blood type. In other words, if we present with a phenotype of type A we might have a genotype of AA or AO; type B might be BB or BO:: O is always OO: AB is always AB. So, according to their claims would it affect AA and AO differently?

“Studies” like this are potentially dangerous. Too little is known and too small a data set with numerous other unisolated variables. A true study would start with control conditions and be done in vivo with simply A B antibodies and control. The sars study from the early 2000s did such. The theory with SARS posited that what is needed for reduced mortality is a “Goldie locks” immune response. Not too much not too little. Too much led to a cytokine storm, too little leads to secondary complications and infections from prolonged symptoms.

I like your assessment of the findings. And for that matter, more data needs to be collected from multiple regions and countries to control for extraneous variables that could explain some of the variance. Really not comfortable with the sweeping assertion that O blood types are somewhat immune from their A antibodies, when their study reports that patients with B blood type with similar A antibodies are still highly infected. If both groups showed a significant drop in infection rates and severity, their theory be somewhat stronger. It would be a small study that has heuristic value and with additional data from other countries could be examined more thoroughly. I don't like the lack of rigor from this study. Did he say it wasn't peer reviewed? Without peer review I'm automatically skeptical. And as someone with a crappy immune system, but B positive blood I was initially hopeful until I heard logical fallacies and conflicting results. I hope people with O blood types don't get a false sense of security from this paper. And what about AB blood type? So many unanswered questions, lack of rigor in analysis, bold assertions that are unfounded, I think much would be needed to rush to publish and I worry about the sense of infallibility the public, made up of a lot of people with O blood type would take. Confirmation bias alone is enough for some to reduce social distancing efforts.

@@user-xd4rs6vr4n OP is right, there are hundreds of blood group antigens, ABO is just the most important one that is ever talked about. Hell, even Rh is more than one antigen. Putting out info saying that A is more likely to be infected is wrong. The researchers didn't phenotype these patients or even test for the D (Rh+/-) antigen from what I read.

@@devanchance8203 I'll defer to you, but don't O blood types also have some innate immunity to malaria that other blood types don't, & isn't a malaria drug (controversially) purported to have some effect against COVID? Maybe it could be an important clue to what's going on is all I wonder.

@@user-xd4rs6vr4n certain blood types do have immunity to one species of malaria but it's called Duffy. If a person lacks Duffy A and Duffy B antigens then malaria vivax cannot enter the cell. That's why I think it's irresponsible for them to put this out. It may be true down the line but to put something like that out without peer review and during a pandemic is crazy.

I subscribed because I am hoping you also find something on rh negative as well. From what I have read this virus likes to attach to certain sugars in the body and O blood type doesn't have as many. China only tested the o a blood types because 35% of china is o blood type but they have very few rh negative blood types. I am O negative and never get respiratory sicknesses. I have never had strep throat or the flu and I am 45. My kids and their mother seem to get it every year.

@@DrWD40 I have been following this virus since the first of January. It isn't making sense to me why the entire world would shut down with such a low death rate. Towards the end of January I seen that it was causing men to go sterile and now I don't see that anywhere. The very first thing that happened was Japan and other countries near China closing schools down and the same with other countries near China. Do you think it is possible that this is a bioweapon that this was meant to be some form of population control that escaped from the lab in China? I get the 20 percent hospitalized and hospitals can't handle the overload which in return would make death rate even worse. But it doesn't seem to be even a 20 percent rate so I'm not buying that reason anymore. Also keep seeing the 5g theory but I'm not finding that credible either. Was just curious on your opinion of why the entire world would shut down over this and sacrifice their economies.

I actually would love to know even further. Things like ethnicity, if they had vaccines or not (especially the flu), and especially if we had anyone else dying from anything else... by God, heart problems became a thing if the past... or are all of the sudden awaiting a second wave of actually people just dying of other things? Nothing, absolutely nothing of this make any sense. I don’t believe any of these numbers and I think that we will never find out the true.

Research from early 2000s on SARS found AB was significantly less likely to be infected and had a much lower mortality rate if infected. The paper goes on to suggest in future outbreaks AB plasma should be investigated as a prophylactic and supplemental treatment. Either way spun down immunity (people who’ve had it and recovered) should be being used more for all sorts of transmissible diseases. Not a lot of money in it I suspect, so maybe that’s why such is not often occurring.

@freeto9139
@freeto9139 4 года назад
That IS a question! And, the abstract I first read when this thing broke in China (it had already coursed thru Korea) indicated Asians had an approximate 5X less resistance via their ace2 ... .49 vs 2.47 for most of the rest of the population. Being a composite virus that was thought to come from a nearby lab certainly makes one question if this was intentional; or, the product of who was available during the development of this virus. That being said, makes blood type of particular significance, as well.
