Chris NAILED it on the cycling being multi-faceted. Exercise, meditation, your connection with nature. We're also gearheads and just like a "car-person" loves their cars and loves to look at them, we do that with bikes. It just ticks so many boxes. I've exercised ALL MY LIFE. But could never stick with it for more than 3 months at a time. Until I fell in love with cycling. In 9 years biggest time off bikes have been a month at most and that was just once. Rest have been 2 week vacation type breaks. Because I literally can't do without it anymore.

Live to ride! I've spent 7 years post accident trying to get back to cycling because i know i love it and it's incomparable with anything else. It's why I ride when I should be resting...because I love riding. Addiction though probably isn't great. But my happiness in life is unequivocally linked to my Strava yearly distance/hours. Granted there are many days also it's a slog. WHere I stop after 5km and go home and feel crap. Motivation, commitment and everything good that comes with cycling doesn't always mean you can get out (especially when it's frikkin freezing!!). It does help a lot though.

On Pandapodium, the L-TWOO eRX groupset is $720 USD. On Merlincycles, the Shimano 105 R7170 Di2 groupset is $996.39 USD. Personally, I’d go with the Shimano every time at that price differential.

It gets old fast, and frustrating having to adjust the bike between two riders all the time, it would be faster to just swap an old aluminium beater to be fair. Especially when some of the controls need adjusting. Also the deal now is the bundle Frame + Kickr Core (no option to just buy the frame), so its best to have 2 trainers + 2 frames with their own mini PC/apple TV and be ready for all situations (even ride with your wife to places, could have positive effects in your relationship :) )

I don't think Chris understands how the Wheeltop rear derailleur works. It has nothing to do with the parallelogram angles and ratios, what matters is the programmability of the step motor that actuates it. It's not that hard to wrap your head around it, really. You use the set screws to determine the span of rear derailleur travel in accordance with the cassette, then select the number of cogs in the app. The rear derailleur then divides the width of the cassette by the number of cogs and Bob's your uncle. The only reason other manufacturers haven't allowed this kind of cross compatibility is because they want to lock people into their ecosystem. With the wheeltop derailleur you can combine it with any hub and cassette standard from all Shim, Sram, Campag or other, from 3 speed to 13 speed. At worst you'll have to change your chain along with your cassette (and maybe chainrings) To be honest, it's pretty cynical of the legacy groupset manufacturers to bake in the obsolescence of their electronic groupsets when they really don't need to, and Wheeltop with some simple lines of code have exposed them for it.
@ChrisMillerCycling
@ChrisMillerCycling 10 дней назад
Ok that explains it very well, thanks for that. I agree planned obsolescence is a nasty tactic and if this helps us avoid that, I'm 100% on board.
@DaveNoakes
@DaveNoakes 9 дней назад
It’s slightly more complex than just selecting the number of gears you want and adjusting the limit screws. I found that although it worked by selecting 12 speed and setting the screws I still had to do some adjustment within the app. I’m not sure if I’m right on this…but I think the spacing between cogs on a 12 speed campagnolo is different to sram/shimano so that’s why you can individually adjust the gear values in the app. This takes a bit of time to work out…trial and error really. Just adjusting the value of the gear that’s slightly skipping to get it all perfect. Yes you can run it as a 3-13 speed by selecting the number of gears you want in the app. But in my experience is won’t shift perfectly and needs fine tuning. It’s the fine tuning people will be put off by or find annoying. I’ve not used it enough to say if it’s worth the money…but first impressions are really good…but it is a pain to get perfect! For the record I don’t take money for these reviews/tests as I want to give an honest opinion.

The whole unwritten industry rule so far with electronic shifting to not be customizable with amount of gears is dumb in my opinion. It has to be technically feasible, if even only for a smaller range, say 10-13 rather than 3-13… manufacturers just don’t do it because it limits the amount of new stuff they can force consumers to purchase.

The parallelogram doesn't change between 11 and 12 speeds. The parallelogram roughly mirrors the shape of the cassette. It literally just needs to move less each shift. I think as long as the servo has fine enough granularity for the denser end (13 speeds), this is a great feature and there is no reason it cannot work well.

COROS greatly underestimated what a bike computer is and the requirements people have from one, from a fundamental basic level. Taking the foundation of their watches and translating it into a dedicated bike computer is just insufficient resulting in a long journey to get to a usable solution. I think after 6 months it may be generally usable but to be competitive it'll take longer than that - 12+ in my opinion if the hardware is even capable of getting there. Something else to consider is that the more functionality/features/etc they add the higher the battery usage can result, diminishing their advantage there bit by bit in that area - unless they make it extremely flexible in what can be enabled/disabled. This has happened with their watches where they revised the battery life estimates after adding features.

Been riding Ltwoo for a few months. The ability to change speeds is a great feature. I started with 11 speed and then switched to 12. Part of the sram/shimano business model is that you have to buy a new groupset every 2 years to stay with the current number of speeds.
@xAudiolith
@xAudiolith 11 дней назад
11 -> 12 speed = faster chain wear, more dropped chains, even less tolerance in the whole drivetrain AKA even more headache and mechanics hours just to ride your bike. I'm riding and racing on 11 still and so far haven't gotten dropped from not having enough gears. I have however seen many mates with that god awful shimano DA 12 speed drop their chains and scratch up their expensive frames. The bike industries idea of innovation is anti consumer. Until parts are available I'll happily ride 11s.

I have the wheel top here in the USA, + yes setting up the rear derailleur on 11-speed. You must be an absolute bike nerd to figure it out. There's so much adjustment and you are able to tinker with the speeds and pretty much adjust everything through the app. It's out of this world. But if you're not technically savvy in this way, it's a real pain in the ass. It took over a week of tinkering for me to get it right. But it is really good when you do get it right. the fact that you can go between different speed cassettes is great for older bikes. I actually love it because this is my sort of thing. And the shifters remind me of a squared off dura ace 7900 but with a hydraulic brakes. It's a nice feeling. I never like the really big hoods of the new stuff. Chris, you'll never be able to figure it out. And you need to pair your phone so going to a bike shop is going to be tough. More than likely the mechanic is going to struggle (especially if he's never seen it before and has to learn it )and he's going to have to use your phone to do it. So it's really for someone doing their own maintenance in their own garage. Not someone who takes their bike to the bike shop. In that case just buy one of the big name brands. And it seems to work best with Shimano cassette chain in chainring.

Some flex in a cocpit is a welcome thing to me. It gives comfort and behavs similar to a spring. Springs by the way store kinetic energy with an extremely high efficiency of about 99% wich makes the "inefficiency" claims invaluable. I'm able to produce nearly 2kw at 82kg body weight and have never had the feeling that my relatively soft cocpit held me back. Maybe the timing of your movement upper to lower body has to change slightly but that is done by turning the pedals about ten times out of the saddle. Also I'd like to see a differenceiation between vertical and torsonal flex. The whole stiffness thing became a meme Some time ago. More is not always better in my humble opinion. Cheers guys I like your show.

2 kW is track sprinter territory. Damn. I agree with your point exactly. Stiffer isn't better. Carbon bike parts (cranks, frame, etc) will return any energy put into it with like 99%+ efficiency. Otherwise your bike would actually heat up during riding. The stiffness of bike components is therefore a matter of pure preference beyond some value required for adequate handling and avoiding brake rub.

To be fair to Dave Arthur, the groupsets on Merlin are always on sale. Yes you should compare RRP to RRP, but he is right that you can buy name brand groupsets for less.

Yeah seems kind of obvious to just go and buy a second hand xc bike to get your handling up to spec if you’re serious about gravel. Would be a very minor investment compared to what he seems to spend on cycling in general. I mean from the clips he showed and way he talked an xc bike is probably actually a better bike to take to this tassy event anyway.

As a consumer as long as the seller is reputable, like Merlin Cycles (bought a groupset from them recently with no issues), I think it's completely valid to compare sale prices to retail prices. IMO the price that the end consumer is willing to pay ultimately what influences a purchase, not what it could sell for.

Jesse absolutely nailed that talk about discipline and motivation. And even someone like Chris who may have more passion and desire to ride still has those moments. It's absolutely a myth that someone is always motivated. Your desire for progress overrides the lack of motivation or fatigue. I've had this conversation with a friend of mine who has struggled with maintaining a fitness routine for even a short length of time. Sometimes I'm tired, not motivated, had a long day as well. I still get out and go. If I'm so bad off that my workout will be terrible due to stress, sleep deprivation or schedule. Quick nap, get it in later or pick up tomorrow with sometimes with a little extra to make up for it. Majority of the time I find a way to do so. And often times like Chris said that enjoyment kicks in once you start. Passion, enthusiasm and motivation are certainly factors for getting out. But it can't be the only ones to rely on because they can be fleeting.

One issue that I think Mark and others that change around the type of exercise they do is that they don't have a long term fixed routine and without that they need to have either higher motivation to keep doing the exercise they are doing currently or increased discipline to say I don't have a specific type of exercise, but I have to do something.

Merlin always has deep discounts on groupsets....also, if Merlin can sell it for that price, you eventually will find it elsewhere for a similar price; so it's perfectly acceptable -- even the best way -- to compare prices. If you are shopping Chinese, I guarantee you aren't the "retail price" type of person.

Yes, was going to say, that’s not an especially low price on a specific crank length or whatever. They always discount it, so I think it’s acceptable also to compare to the price you can actually buy the product for.

I think you guys have missed the purpose of the Zwift ride, it fits persons from 5 feet to 6 feet 6 inches. Every one in your family can use this bike. I personally hate putting and taking my bike off the trainer. For this price Zwift can get people exercising who do not even have bikes.
@out_spocken
@out_spocken 10 дней назад
Cept you have standardized bar width, standardised crank length. So instead of easily clipping on the gaming paddles and putting your own bike on a trainer...you have to spend time adjusting seat height and fore/aft, handlebar height and fore/aft. It is literally easier having a real bike, with the added benefit that it's spare if and when your main bike goes down, or if a guest comes over and you want to take them for a ride.
@proctermorris6657
@proctermorris6657 10 дней назад
Jesse's comment was more that you are better off investing in an 'old clunker', or possibly use an older bike from your stable, and leave it on the trainer permanently. Something I do actually. I would never ever buy anything like this Zwift bike. It would just be downright annoying I think.

Hearing you discuss the zwift bike, my thoughts. They shpuld have partnered with some bike brand to get normal whitelabel bike frames and just put their wireless shifters on them. Do the adjustable cranks like you said and ship it as a frameset with a zwift hub.

As far as the changing speeds on a derailleur, the differences are in cable pull on mechanical, on electric the motor/servo can a adjust properly and has nothing to do with the parallelogram of it. If anything it would be very easy to adjust if the tuning options are available
@a1white
@a1white 10 дней назад
The new Shimano CUES system uses one derailleur for 9, 10 and 11 speed. Using a single pull ratio. Not drop bar at the moment, but it’s a good sign that Shimano are going down that road.
@kadenlindsey358
@kadenlindsey358 10 дней назад
yeah the limiting factor is in the shifters, Like shimano claris 8 speed uses the same pull ratio as older 105/ultegra 10 speed, so you could use those shifters with the cheap claris RD and get 10 speed shifting

Hi Chris, re the gravel bike geometry/setup, I too started out with a shorter stem. I've gravitated back to my road setup in terms of stem length and angle (even though the bars are fractionally wider). I use it for gravel, and CX racing, and it seems to be good. I think the shorter stem on an essentially road frame just compresses you too much. Good luck on the weekend.

I think they missed the point of the Mark Lewis video. Whether they call it “motivation” or “discipline” his point is that you need the will to start (or continue). For some people, their brain chemistry is such that this is easy that it doesn’t even seem to be a decision. For others, it is a huge effort. And of course people exist all along the spectrum between the two.

Thanks for covering the coros dura. A lot of people lost their credibility with their coverage of that. It highlights how shallow and unprofessional a lot of "reviewers" are in this sphere. Their is a heavy bias towards positive reviews to the detriment of the consumer. Negatives are pushed under the ruck and false positive aspects, like a ultra durable mount are highlighted. Recently i watched david arthur ""reviewing" some shokz bone conducting headphones and he falsely stated that they would have noise canceling, while this product can't have any, because by design it isn't sealed. Shokz highlighted in their marketing that their microphones! have nosie canceling and david just misunderstood that and said in the review tha the noise canceling is good, while he just could not have validated that, because it isn't actually there. Even when corrected he doesn't care. He is just one example of these too big to fail reviewers who operate without journalistic credibility. It is shameful. So thank you for being honest! The coros dura wont be fixed even with firmware updates, it is dead on arrival, because coros made some bad design decisions, like the necessity do do everything from your phone, like rerouting.

Jesse "this is a very novice level product". Yup. I think that's exactly why they didn't bother making adjustable cranks. No novice cares what length cranks they're riding. It's the "experts" that have come up with the idea (in the last few years) that changing your crank length 1cm is an incredible important transformative experience. I mean it would have been nice, but for a gen1 product that is pulling out the stops to be CHEAP, I don't think it's a big deal. And I agree with Chris. I think tons of more intermediate/advanced riders, when it comes to upgrading or getting an indoor setup now, will happily pay a bit extra to get this and get an all-in-one setup so you can leave the bike in the shed with it's wheel on and have way less mucking around with your indoor experience. Yes in theory you could do a pretty similar thing a bit cheaper with some effort, but people hate effort and mucking around generally, they like products with a warranty that work out of the box. It's not like it's any more 'wasteful' than taking a bike that's perfectly good for riding outside and leaving it on a trainer year round.

The Look looks good because it looked like having massive tyre clearance on the back of the frame. To mee the best aero bike is the aerobike that can handle the biggest tyres, and I like it to have a slack geometry so I dont get scared going steep down. And that carbon fork in the front, exchange it with a good damper that saves me form getting scared hitting potholes. But thats my preferences, I think proper windtunneltesting should be done, and testing on the road.
