Fun fact: There is a pipe jaw on your vise. Inside of the main flat jaw are a pair of U shaped jaws facing each other specifically designed for holding pipe. It does require a longer piece of pipe for the way you're using it as a bending radius but it's way less likely to slip out than using the flat jaws.

Before taking early retirement in SE Asia, I lived in a log cabin as did my neighbor across the road. In his forge house, he made a variation of these hooks. The end where the nail or spike was forged, was instead flattened or "spooned." This allowed us to drive the hook in between the logs of our cabins. When you wanted to move a hook to a new location, no problem. Simply pull the hook and cover the spot where the hook used to be with you favorite chinking compound. There was no damage or holes in the logs. We also made up support brackets for small shelves in the same manner.

Good idea would be to put some twists in the spike too, that way you can screw it into the tree deeper and it will hold more. I know because i got one like that, it has a screw part instead of a spike, i use it to hold my gear at home too.
