Corralling and sorting pastured pigs.

Pastured pigs are great, right up until its time to catch and load them! In this video we are catching a larger group of pigs and sending out to the processor. Tips on how we do it for low stress ( man & beast!) and success the first time.
I (Jordan) and my wife, Laura, own and operate J & L Green Farm in Virginia. It has been our full time occupation for the last 12 years building this first generation, pasture based, direct to retail farm. We are in the small percentage of farmers that actually make their income from farming. As such we address our farm as a business and make decisions with that in mind. What you see here is what it takes. No BS or disney’ifying.

I love the idea of putting hay or straw between the ground and the trailer to block that space from their view.

I though the time lesson was fantastic and very true. I will tell you a funny story. When I was a kid my father was attacked by a huge boar. I can still see him coming into the house furious. Later he went and got the 6x4 trailer with a stock crate and parked it at the catle race. He worked until late but he had the boar in the trailer. He took the trailer to the garage at the lead in to the road. Put the car on and fed the boar. About midnight I was woken by a strange noise and the dogs were barking. What happened was the boar had totally destroyed the stock crate and had escaped the trailer. He was at the entrance to the pig pen. Dad let him in and we went back to bed. Pig 2, Dad 0. We missed the market day and dad worked on the stock crate and made it bullet proof. Next Wednesday the pig went to Market and pulled a fine price. To save 1&1/2 hours it cost 1 week. Too true to hide the watch. Thanks for sharing.

A key point (that you have) is that the pigs do not have to negotiate a ramp or climb up into the trailer. Pigs hate that and will balk at it.

I have a hydraulic hog cart, the wheels are mounted on arms attached to hydraulic cylinders so you can lower it all the way to the ground. I normally load onto that, and then I can set the height just right for the trailer.

Just to clarify, pig sorting boards can be of any color. The key is that they appear solid to the pigs/hogs, so they don't try to push past them. Not long ago, they were all made on the farm of wood.

Do you handle your pigs with boards quite a bit? Or show them the trailer beforehand? They don't seem phased when you move them onto the trailer, jealous lol. We have very tame Berks, but they won't willingly go onto our trailer/cart, they'll try to dodge you (unless we use a narrow chute).We use boards of course but it hasn't been a cakewalk like in your video!

By 'free feed', I assume you mean 'free choice' feed? Is this a commercial grain mix, or...? After all, no feed is really 'free'. :) Pasture land must be paid for, (every year, even after you 'own' it), and 'free' feed from other sources takes time and money to haul and handle.

@FarmBuilder
@FarmBuilder 8 лет назад
+Big Jim most processors here prefer castrated as well. Those ones you saw are 2 we had put it with the group just prior. They are replacements.
@Jefferdaughter
@Jefferdaughter 7 лет назад
Silly, really, the requirement for castration of hogs. 'Boar taint' in the meat can be found in females, as well. And many boars have very little odor even when breeding sows. A guy in Vermont does needle biopsies of his boar's meat before using them for breeding to make sure that he is not passing along that genetic trait.Also - pigs or hogs kept in filth will have the off-flavor associated with 'boar taint' regardless of gender or whether or not they are intact.A third cause of off-flavored meat sometimes confused with boar taint, or 'gaminess' is the animal not being bled properly. This should not happen at a commercial slaughterhouse...
@burnshirtvalleyfarm6337
@burnshirtvalleyfarm6337 6 лет назад
Boar taint is real. I tried not castrating and also missed castrating boars in the past and the smell when cooking their meat drives you out of the house. Genetics may matter but why take the chance. Castration is worth while insurance.
@ka6148
@ka6148 5 лет назад
@@Jefferdaughter in my experience slaughterhouse pigs can be improperly bled out just like a home processed hog

@@burnshirtvalleyfarm6337 I've heard castration is only needed with older pigs, boars under a year don't develop the problem.

Your choice of words for certain tools of the trade is amusing. 'Red boards' for sorting boards because yours happen to be red, though any color works fine... And 'holding cell' sounds like you worked for the city jail, or watched too many police procedural dramas on television. :) I think the term you meant was 'holding pen'. :)~ Also, getting the pigs/hogs accustomed to coming when called for food makes loading even easier. Animal behaviorists call it operant conditioning. To old timers it was hog calling.* Simply use the same sound or call every time they are fed, say a new load of apples, and they quickly learn to come when called. Ours came to a call and a shake of grain in a bucket - and just walked onto the trailer, following the sound of the call and the shake. Then we sort the ones we want to keep back out of the trailer. Our swine get very little grain, and don't have access to a range feeder full of it, so this works like magic. Just a little now and then so they come when they call. We've also used apples but those are pricey out of orchard clean-up season. A very similar approach to what you do, and of course everyone should 'tweak' things to fit them, their swine, their facilities, etc.*Contemporary society has painted old-time farmers as all an ignorant bunch, but letters written by farmers and published in the annual yearbook of the USDA back in the 1800s demonstrate that those farmers were much more literate than most high school graduates of today.
